PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML Descripción general

The Microchip PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML is a 32-bit MIPS32 M4K RISC microcontroller running at 50 MHz (83 DMIPS) with 128 KB Flash and 32 KB SRAM, housed in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package with an exposed thermal pad. It targets audio, graphics, USB, and advanced-analog embedded applications requiring more performance than 8/16-bit MCUs.

A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer with a 32-bit datapath, on-chip Flash program memory, SRAM data memory, and a rich set of peripherals (timers, ADC, communication controllers). Within the taxonomy, PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML belongs to: microcontroller -> 32-bit MCU -> MIPS MCU -> PIC32MX family -> general-purpose performance line. It is engineered for mid-volume embedded designs that need USB, graphics LCD, and capacitive touch without moving to an ARM Cortex-M device.

Key specifications include 128 KB Flash, 32 KB SRAM, USB 2.0 Full-Speed OTG, two I2S/SPI modules, a Parallel Master Port (PMP) for graphics, Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible pin mapping, a 1 Msps 10-channel 10-bit ADC, mTouch capacitive-touch support, and 1 ns high-resolution timer capture. Operating voltage is 2.5 V / 3.3 V (range typically 2.3 V to 3.6 V), current consumption is 0.5 mA/MHz active, and the industrial temperature grade is -40 C to +105 C.

Architecturally, the PIC32MX250F128B uses the MIPS32 M4K core with a 5-stage pipeline, hardware multiply/divide, single-cycle MAC, and pre-fetch cache for deterministic interrupt response. The 50 MHz rating delivers 83 DMIPS, enough for USB stacks, small TCP/IP, audio decoding, and graphical user interfaces. The PMP and PPS features let the same 28-pin footprint drive LCDs, keypads, or external memory - a flexibility point that PIC24 and PIC16 cannot match.

Typical applications include USB HID/audio peripherals, low-cost graphical displays, capacitive-touch control panels, industrial sensor hubs, and connected IoT edge nodes. The combination of USB + PMP + mTouch in a 28-pin QFN makes it well-suited to compact, mixed-signal designs that previously required a separate USB controller.

When designing with this device, route the exposed thermal pad (EP) to a continuous ground plane to keep theta-JA low, place the 12 MHz primary oscillator within 12 mm of the OSCI/OSCO pins, and bypass each VDD/VUSB pair with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor as close to the IC as possible. Decoupling layout dominates USB and PMP signal-integrity results more than firmware tuning.

USB Audio Class Peripherals

The PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML is well suited for USB Audio Class 1.0 peripherals because it integrates USB 2.0 Full-Speed OTG alongside two I2S modules and 32 KB of SRAM for audio buffering. At 50 MHz (83 DMIPS), it can run the USB stack plus a software WAV decoder or pass-through to an external DAC via I2S. The 128 KB Flash stores USB descriptors, class drivers, and application code with margin. Designers route the D+/D- lines to the on-chip transceiver with 15k pull-downs on D-, and tie VUSB to 3.3 V through the recommended decoupling network. This eliminates external USB PHY ICs and shrinks BOM cost versus two-chip USB solutions.

📺

Graphical LCD HMI with PMP

The PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML drives small graphical LCDs through its Parallel Master Port (PMP), freeing the CPU from bit-banging timing. With 32 KB SRAM and 128 KB Flash, it can hold a framebuffer for 128 x 64 monochrome or 96 x 64 color displays while leaving room for UI logic. Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) lets the same MCU footprint drive different LCD pinouts without PCB rework. The 50 MHz MIPS core updates the panel at 30+ FPS without DMA, enabling animated icons, gauges, and menu transitions. This is a typical use case for industrial control panels and consumer appliances.

🧩

Capacitive Touch Control Panels

With 1 ns high-resolution timer capture, it can resolve fine-grained capacitance changes for waterproof touch overlays. The 28-pin QFN provides up to 14 analog-capable pins for touch electrodes, enough for a typical appliance keypad. Firmware uses Microchip's free mTouch library, which handles scan sequencing and debounce. Combined with PMP-driven LCD, the part delivers a complete touch + display solution in one chip.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hubs

The PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML serves as a sensor hub in industrial settings because it offers a 10-bit 1 Msps ADC with 10 input channels, two I2C/SPI ports, and a robust -40 C to +105 C industrial temperature rating. The MIPS M4K core performs linearization, calibration, and Modbus or CAN-style protocol framing on incoming sensor streams. With USB OTG, it can present as a CDC device to a host PC for diagnostics or field updates. The 128 KB Flash fits typical sensor-fusion code plus a small RTOS, and 32 KB SRAM holds multiple sampled channels. This makes it attractive for cost-sensitive industrial monitoring.

🧩

IoT Edge Nodes

The PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML fits low-power IoT edge nodes because it consumes only 0.5 mA/MHz active and supports sleep modes down to microamp-level standby. With USB OTG and PMP, it can act as the local controller in edge gateways, communicating with sensors via I2C/SPI and forwarding data over USB to a host processor. The 32 KB SRAM buffers packets before burst transmission, and the 128 KB Flash supports TLS-lite stacks and OTA bootloaders. Combined with mTouch, an edge node can include a local user interface for diagnostics. This is a common architecture for IoT bridge and bridge-plus-sensor products.

🖥️

USB HID and Consumer Peripherals

The PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML is a strong fit for USB HID keyboards, mice, game controllers, and consumer peripherals because the on-chip USB Full-Speed OTG eliminates an external PHY and the 50 MHz core handles HID report generation at high polling rates. PPS remaps UART, I2C, and SPI to any digital pin, simplifying PCB layout for compact form factors. The 128 KB Flash fits USB HID stack plus vendor-specific report logic, while 32 KB SRAM supports bootloaders and dual-image firmware updates. Many commercial HID reference designs from Microchip use this exact MCU, accelerating time-to-market.

🎧

Audio Codec Front-Ends

The PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML works as an audio codec front-end by bridging USB or I2S sources to external DACs/ADCs through its two I2S modules. With 32 KB SRAM it buffers small audio frames between the host interface and the codec, while the 128 KB Flash holds configuration, mixing, and effect-processing code. The 10-bit ADC can also serve as a measurement path for analog inputs or microphone preamp monitoring. Industrial temperature grade makes it suitable for installed audio equipment. Combined with PMP and mTouch, the MCU can host the entire front panel of an audio product from a single chip.

Notas de diseño

Route the exposed thermal pad of the 28-QFN to a continuous ground plane. Per Microchip PIC32MX1XX/2XX datasheet DS60001168L section on PCB layout, the EP must be soldered to a pad with at least 8 thermal vias to a ground pour. Without the EP soldered, junction-to-ambient thermal resistance rises sharply and the chip can overheat in USB + PMP applications where peripheral toggling is heavy.

Decouple each VDD/VSS pair with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of the IC pin. For USB designs, also add a 0.1 uF on VUSB near the pin and a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on the board-side VBUS rail. Estimated: a 50 MHz active PIC32MX250F128B drawing 0.5 mA/MHz per the datasheet consumes ~25 mA, so the 3.3 V LDO must source at least 50 mA with USB active.

Keep the 12 MHz primary oscillator traces (OSCI/OSCO) shorter than 12 mm and guard them with a ground ring. Per Microchip PIC32MX oscillator design notes, long traces couple noise into the PLL and degrade USB Full-Speed signal integrity. Place any series termination resistor at the driver end of the trace, never at the load end, to dampen reflections.

For USB, route D+ and D- as a 90-ohm differential pair with no splits, no vias, and continuous ground reference. Per Microchip USB design guidelines, the trace length should not exceed 50 mm and the impedance must be 90 ohms +/- 10%. A common-mode choke near the connector improves EMI compliance but adds 1-2 dB of insertion loss that must be budgeted against USB spec masks.

Do not leave unused VDD pins floating - tie each VDD pin to 3.3 V even if peripherals on that rail are unused. Floating VDD pins can trigger ESD latch-up on the PIC32MX250F128B-50I/ML. Likewise, unused I/O pins must be configured as outputs low or inputs with the internal pull-up enabled to avoid floating-input oscillation in noisy USB environments.
