ADS1292RIPBS Présentation
An analog front-end (AFE) is a mixed-signal subsystem that conditions low-amplitude physiological signals (typically 1 uV to 5 mV) and digitizes them so a host processor can run diagnostic algorithms. In the hierarchy of medical electronics, AFEs sit between the electrode/sensor interface and the digital signal controller (DSC) or microcontroller, replacing the discrete instrumentation amplifier plus separate 16-/24-bit ADC approach with a single qualified, low-power IC. The ADS1292 family is optimized for electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG) front-end designs where low input-referred noise and high common-mode rejection are mandatory for diagnostic accuracy.
Key features include 2 high-resolution 24-bit delta-sigma ADCs with simultaneous sampling up to 8 kSPS per channel, integrated PGA gains from 1 to 12, an integrated respiration modulation/demodulation circuit, a 2.7 V to 5.25 V analog supply range, a 1.8 V to 3.6 V digital I/O supply, and a flexible SPI-compatible serial interface. The device provides right-leg drive (RLD) signal generation hardware, lead-off detection comparators, and an internal oscillator that eliminates the external crystal requirement in cost-sensitive wearable designs.
Architecturally, the ADS1292 uses a chopper-stabilized input front-end combined with a 4th-order delta-sigma modulator and a multi-bit digital decimation filter to achieve input-referred noise in the microvolt range while drawing sub-milliwatt quiescent current. The integrated respiration channel uses a high-frequency AC excitation source and synchronous demodulator to extract breathing impedance without an external analog multiplier IC.
Typical applications include wearable fitness and heart-rate monitors, single-lead and multi-lead ECG patches, patient-side telemetry modules, sports and EMG rehabilitation devices, and bioimpedance-based sleep monitors. The wide supply range supports both single-cell Li-ion battery designs (3.7 V nominal) and USB-powered diagnostic instruments (5 V bus).
When designing with this device, ensure the analog and digital ground planes are joined at a single point under the IC exposed pad, place the 1 uF, 0.1 uF, and 10 uF decoupling capacitors as close as possible to AVDD and DVDD pins, and route the right-leg drive (RLD) amplifier output through a feedback network sized for the patient-electrode return path to maximize common-mode rejection at 50/60 Hz mains frequencies.

Applications typiques
ADS1292RIPBS convient pour 7 applications: Wearable ECG Heart-Rate Monitor, Single-Lead ECG Patch, Patient Monitoring Telemetry, EMG Rehabilitation Device, Bioimpedance / Respiration Monitor, Sports and Fitness Wearable, EEG Headband Front-End.
Wearable ECG Heart-Rate Monitor
The ADS1292RIPBS fits wearable ECG heart-rate monitors because its 740 uW typical power at 1 kSPS supports multi-day operation from a small Li-ion cell, while the 24-bit delta-sigma ADC delivers input-referred noise low enough to resolve the mV-level QRS complex from dry-contact chest electrodes. The integrated PGA (gains 1-12) eliminates a discrete instrumentation amp, and the SPI interface streams samples directly to a low-power MCU. Designers should drive the right-leg drive (RLD) amplifier output through a feedback network tuned for the electrode-skin interface to maximize 50/60 Hz common-mode rejection.
Recommandé
Single-Lead ECG Patch
The ADS1292RIPBS fits single-lead ECG patches because its 32-pin TQFP 5x5 mm footprint and 740 uW dissipation allow a thin, flexible wearable form factor. The integrated lead-off comparators detect electrode lift in real time, and the internal oscillator eliminates the external crystal often needed in patch designs. Using the R-suffix respiration channel, the same patch also captures breathing rate, doubling the clinical value without additional sensor hardware.
Recommandé
Patient Monitoring Telemetry
The ADS1292RIPBS fits patient monitoring telemetry because its 24-bit resolution preserves diagnostic-grade ECG morphology for arrhythmia detection, while its 5 V analog supply tolerance supports USB-powered bedside monitors. Two simultaneous-sampling channels enable either dual-lead ECG or ECG-plus-impedance respiration from a single IC, reducing BOM cost. SPI throughput up to 8 kSPS per channel accommodates higher-bandwidth signals such as pacemaker pulse detection and external pacing artifacts.
Recommandé
EMG Rehabilitation Device
The ADS1292RIPBS fits EMG rehabilitation devices because its wide PGA gain range (1-12) and 24-bit dynamic range capture both low-level resting muscle tone and high-level contraction bursts. The 8 kSPS per channel maximum sample rate comfortably exceeds the 4 kHz bandwidth of surface EMG signals. Battery operation from 2.7 V to 5.25 V is compatible with single-cell Li-ion chemistries common in handheld rehab stimulator/recorder products.
Recommandé
Bioimpedance / Respiration Monitor
The ADS1292RIPBS R-suffix fits bioimpedance and respiration monitors because the integrated high-frequency AC excitation source and synchronous demodulator extract breathing impedance without an external analog multiplier IC. This single-chip approach reduces BOM and PCB area for wearable respiration patches and sleep-monitoring bands. Both 50 kHz and 64 kHz excitation frequencies are supported internally for impedance spectroscopy applications.
Recommandé
Sports and Fitness Wearable
The ADS1292RIPBS fits sports and fitness wearables because its sub-milliwatt dissipation extends runtime in chest-strap heart-rate straps and armband EMG devices used by athletes. The wide 2.7 V to 5.25 V supply range supports both rechargeable Li-ion designs and direct USB charging without level shifters. The integrated lead-off detection automatically handles dry-electrode lift during high-motion exercise, improving data reliability versus discrete AFE solutions.
Recommandé
EEG Headband Front-End
The ADS1292RIPBS can be deployed in 2-channel EEG headband designs (dry-electrode consumer wellness products) because the 24-bit delta-sigma ADC resolves sub-microvolt EEG rhythms while the integrated PGA handles electrode-tissue offset up to +/-300 mV. The chopper-stabilized input front-end cancels 1/f noise that would otherwise dominate EEG signal chains. The 32-pin TQFP footprint enables compact headband electronics with both channels routed to forehead or temple dry electrodes.

Notes de conception
The 32-pin TQFP-32 (PBS) package has an exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to a continuous analog ground plane on the top layer. Route the digital SPI bus away from the analog IN1P/IN1N/IN2P/IN2N/RLDIN traces; place the 1 uF, 0.1 uF, and 10 uF decoupling capacitors on AVDD and DVDD as close to the supply pins as possible to suppress switching noise from the host MCU.
Estimated: at 8 kSPS with PGA gain 12, the input-referred noise is below 10 uVpp, but this assumes well-shielded electrode cables and a properly driven right-leg-drive (RLD) loop. Without RLD feedback, mains 50/60 Hz common-mode noise degrades SNR by 30-40 dB. Connect the RLD amplifier output through a 100 kohm series resistor to the patient reference electrode.
Use a ferrite bead or pi-filter between the host 3.3 V regulator and the ADS1292RIPBS DVDD pin to isolate digital switching noise from the analog front-end. Power up AVDD before DVDD by at least 1 ms to prevent digital-domain latch-up through the internal ESD structures; sequence the ADXLin voltage rails accordingly if using a power-rail sequencer IC.
Do not float any of the GPIO pins - either tie them to DGND through a 100 kohm resistor or drive them to a defined logic level. The internal oscillator requires the CLKSEL register bit to be set for default internal-oscillator operation; failing to do so leaves the part waiting for an external clock on the CLK pin, which appears as a no-data fault on DRDY.
