ATMEGA16-16PI Présentation

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA16-16PI is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 16KB in-system programmable Flash, 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, and up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz, packaged in a 40-pin PDIP for through-hole mounting with an industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single integrated circuit that combines a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals such as timers, ADCs, and serial interfaces on one chip. Microcontrollers sit at the heart of embedded systems, below application processors and above discrete logic in the system hierarchy, and the AVR family pioneered the modern single-cycle RISC MCU architecture now maintained by Microchip Technology after its acquisition of Atmel.

Key features of the ATMEGA16-16PI include 131 powerful instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle, 32 general-purpose working registers, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, three timers/counters (two 8-bit, one 16-bit), and a JTAG interface for on-chip debugging. Serial connectivity covers SPI, UART, USART, and TWI (I2C), giving the part flexible interconnect options for legacy and new designs.

Technical depth: the AVR enhanced RISC core is fully static and executes C-friendly code efficiently, with in-system self-programming flash enabling field firmware updates. The ATmega16 die delivers near-1-MIPS-per-MHz efficiency, and the 40-PDIP package makes it a favorite for prototyping, breadboarding, and through-hole industrial boards.

Typical applications include industrial control and automation, hobbyist and educational platforms (supported by the MightyCore Arduino hardware package), motor control interfaces, and measurement instruments leveraging the 10-bit ADC.

Design consideration: for reliable operation at 16 MHz, use the full-swing crystal oscillator option with correct fuse settings, and provide 100 nF decoupling on VCC and AVCC pins.

Applications typiques

ATMEGA16-16PI convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Control and Automation, Educational and Hobbyist Platforms, Measurement Instruments and Data Acquisition, Embedded Serial Communication Nodes, Motor Control and PWM Actuator Drivers, Legacy Product Repair and End-of-Life Sustainment.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation

The ATMEGA16-16PI fits industrial control because its -40C to +85C industrial rating, 16 MIPS throughput, and rich peripheral set (8-channel 10-bit ADC, 16-bit PWM, TWI/SPI/UART) cover typical sensor-to-actuator loops without external components. In a PLC-style board, ADC channels read transducers while timer1 PWM drives actuators; the through-hole PDIP-40 simplifies field service. Trade-off: at 16 MHz full speed the part needs 4.5-5.5V supply, and there is no hardware division, so control-loop tuning is done in integer math.

🧩

Educational and Hobbyist Platforms

The ATMEGA16-16PI is a classroom favorite because the DIP-40 package survives repeated insertion in breadboards and sockets, and the MightyCore Arduino hardware package provides Arduino IDE support for ATmega16, ATmega32, and ATmega8535. JTAG enables step-by-step on-chip debugging that low-end hobby MCUs lack, teaching professional workflows with the same chip. Consideration: firmware uses custom MightyCore board definitions rather than mainstream Arduino cores, so fuse configuration must be done manually or boards may fail to boot.

🔧

Measurement Instruments and Data Acquisition

With an 8-channel 10-bit ADC and differential input modes, the ATMEGA16-16PI builds compact multichannel acquisition front ends: port A doubles as ADC inputs, AVCC/AREF pins allow clean analog reference design, and the UART streams readings to a host while results are logged to the 512B EEPROM between transmissions. Up to 15kSPS at full 10-bit resolution gives adequate bandwidth for temperature, pressure, and voltage monitoring. For better resolution, an external delta-sigma ADC on SPI is a common companion approach.

🌐

Embedded Serial Communication Nodes

The ATMEGA16-16PI integrates USART, SPI, and TWI (I2C) on one die, making it an economical RS-232/RS-485 node or SPI/I2C bridge in legacy industrial buses. Pin 14 (RXD) and pin 15 (TXD) map directly to external transceivers; JTAG pins double as I2C (SCL/SDA on PC0/PC1) when debug is not used, so protocols can be mixed on a 40-pin footprint. Note: only one UART is present, so multi-drop designs should implement protocol handling carefully or step up to an ATmega128-class part.

⚙

Motor Control and PWM Actuator Drivers

Timer1 provides two high-speed PWM outputs (OC1A on PD5, OC1B on PD4) and timer2 adds OC2 on PD7, enabling multi-channel actuator drive: DC motor speed, servo positioning, and brightness control from a single ATMEGA16-16PI. The 16-bit timer gives fine duty-cycle resolution, and input-capture (ICP1 on PD6) supports tachometer feedback. Driving inductive loads requires external gate drivers or flyback protection; at 5V logic, level shifting is needed for 12V+ motor rails, which the companion gate drivers provide.

💡

Legacy Product Repair and End-of-Life Sustainment

Many 2000s-era boards specify ATmega16 in DIP-40, and the ATMEGA16-16PI with its industrial rating and drop-in family (ATMEGA16-16PC/PU, ATMEGA16A-PI, ATMEGA32-16PI) is the standard sustainment choice. Socketed DIP packages allow firmware reflash without desoldering, and pin compatibility across the family means a repair shop can stock one footprint for several BOM variants. Caution: verify the 'I' versus 'C' temperature suffix against the original BOM environment before substitution in outdoor or cold-storage equipment.

What are the key specifications of ATMEGA16-16PI that engineers should know?
The ATMEGA16-16PI is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 16KB in-system programmable Flash (8K x 16), 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, and up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz. It integrates an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, three timers, SPI/UART/USART/I2C interfaces, a JTAG debug interface, and 32 GPIO, in a 40-pin PDIP package rated -40C to +85C, per the Atmel/Microchip datasheet.
What is the price of ATMEGA16-16PI?
The ATMEGA16-16PI is priced at approximately $6.20 for a single unit, with volume breaks to about $3.72 at 1000 units as of 2026-09-16. DigiKey, Mouser, and Octopart aggregate 6 distributors for this part; XAIPART lists quantity tiers of 1/10/100/500/1000 with prices falling roughly 40% from unit quantity to 1K quantity. Always confirm live pricing since through-hole AVR parts fluctuate with inventory cycles.
Where to buy ATMEGA16-16PI online?
You can buy the ATMEGA16-16PI from DigiKey (stock ships same day), Mouser, and authorized distributors found via Octopart, which compares bulk discounts from 6 distributors. XAIPART also offers this part with transparent quantity-tier pricing. For guaranteed authenticity, purchase through Microchip authorized channels, since older Atmel-branded AVR parts are a known target for counterfeiters in gray-market channels.
What is the difference between ATMEGA16-16PI and ATMEGA16-16PU?
The ATMEGA16-16PI and ATMEGA16-16PU are electrically identical 16 MHz, 16KB Flash parts in the same 40-pin PDIP package. According to FindIC comparison data, the suffix P = PDIP-40, and the difference is the temperature rating: -16PI is rated -40C to +85C (industrial), while -16PU is rated 0C to +70C (commercial). Choose -16PI for industrial environments; both are pin-to-pin drop-in compatible.
Is ATMEGA16-16PI the same as ATMEGA32-16PI?
No. The ATMEGA32-16PI doubles the program and data memory (32KB Flash, 2KB SRAM, 1KB EEPROM) versus the ATMEGA16-16PI, but both share the same 40-pin PDIP package and identical pinout, so the ATMEGA32-16PI can serve as a higher-memory drop-in replacement for the ATMEGA16-16PI. Firmware must be recompiled, and fuse settings should be reviewed, but no PCB change is required.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA16-16PI?
The best drop-in replacements are same-family Atmel/Microchip parts in the same 40-pin PDIP package: ATMEGA16-16PC (commercial temperature), ATMEGA16A-PI (die refresh, faster flash endurance), ATMEGA32-16PI (double memory), and ATMEGA8535-16PI (same pinout, slightly different ADC/peripheral set). All are pin-to-pin compatible on the identical footprint. Cross-brand equivalents in PDIP-40 are not documented, so verification against the datasheet is required before considering any non-Atmel part.
What is the best non-Atmel (cross-brand) equivalent for ATMEGA16-16PI?
There is no documented cross-brand pin-to-pin equivalent for the ATMEGA16-16PI in 40-pin PDIP. Microchip's cross-reference tools and DigiKey's cross-reference tool list only parametrically similar parts (such as PIC16-series or STC 8051 parts), which are functional substitutes, not drop-in replacements. If a non-drop-in substitute is acceptable, the ATMEGA328P in DIP-28 offers Arduino ecosystem support but requires a new PCB footprint.
Where to download ATMEGA16-16PI datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA16-16PI datasheet PDF (8-bit AVR Microcontroller with 16K Bytes In-System Programmable Flash) is available from Microchip's official product page and mirrors such as Alldatasheet (a 315-page comprehensive datasheet and a 24-page summary exist). XAIPART links the current Microchip-hosted document. Avoid third-party 'current' claims; always download from microchip.com for the latest revision of doc2466.
Where to find the ATMEGA16-16PI pinout for the 40-pin DIP package?
The ATMEGA16-16PI pinout follows the standard 40-pin PDIP layout: pins 1-8 are port B (PB0-PB7 with XCK/T1/AIN0/OC0/SS/MOSI/MISO/SCK functions), pin 9 RESET, pin 10 VCC, pin 11 GND, pins 12-13 XTAL2/XTAL1, pins 14-21 port D (PD0-PD7 with RXD/TXD/INT0/INT1/OC1B/OC1A/ICP1/OC2), pins 22-29 port C (I2C and JTAG functions), pins 30-32 AVCC/GND/AREF, and pins 33-40 port A (ADC0-ADC7). The full diagram is in the manufacturer datasheet.
Is ATMEGA16-16PI suitable for industrial control applications?
Yes. The ATMEGA16-16PI is explicitly rated for industrial temperature (-40C to +85C, indicated by the 'I' temperature suffix) and provides robust peripherals for industrial control: an 8-channel 10-bit ADC for sensor acquisition, 16-bit PWM via timer 1 for actuator control, and SPI/UART/TWI for fieldbus connectivity. Its through-hole PDIP-40 package also aids serviceability in industrial equipment, though SMD alternatives suit vibration-heavy environments better.
When should I choose ATMEGA16-16PI over ATMEGA328P?
Choose the ATMEGA16-16PI when you need JTAG on-chip debugging (the ATMEGA328P only supports debugWIRE), more PWM/timer configurations, or when maintaining an existing ATmega16 PCB. Choose the ATMEGA328P for new designs needing the Arduino ecosystem, lower power (picoPower), and better long-term availability. The ATmega16 lacks seamless Arduino integration and needs MightyCore and manual fuse configuration, per community documentation.
Is ATMEGA16-16PI in stock and what is the lead time?
DigiKey reports the ATMEGA16-16PI as in stock with same-day shipping, and Octopart aggregates inventory from 6 distributors, so lead time for stock quantities is effectively immediate as of 2026-09-16. However, this is an older Atmel-generation part, so large-volume orders may face allocation; verify quantity availability and consider the ATMEGA16A-PI as the active-generation substitute with identical pinout for continuity of supply.
Does ATMEGA16-16PI support JTAG debugging and ICSP programming?
Yes. The ATMEGA16-16PI includes a JTAG interface for on-chip debugging (JTAG pins are shared with port C: TCK on PC2, TMS on PC3, TDO on PC4, TDI on PC5) and supports In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) via SPI using the MOSI, MISO, SCK, RESET, and VCC/GND lines. Per Microchip documentation, tools such as the MPLAB SNAP connect over USB and use two device I/O pins plus reset for in-circuit debug and programming.
Is the ATMEGA16-16PI RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes, the ATMEGA16-16PI uses the 'P' (nickel-palladium-gold, lead-free finish) PDIP package and is RoHS compliant; FindIC lists the part as GREEN. Commercial-temperature 'PC' variants and industrial 'PI' variants both ship lead-free in current production. For exact REACH and conflict-minerals declarations, request Microchip's product environmental reports for the specific date code, as compliance documents are updated per lot.
What maximum crystal frequency and oscillator settings does ATMEGA16-16PI support?
The ATMEGA16-16PI supports up to 16 MHz, delivering 16 MIPS with most single-cycle instructions, using the full-swing crystal oscillator option selected via CKOPT and CKSEL fuses. Lower frequency ranges (low-power crystal, low-frequency crystal, and internal 1/2/4/8 MHz RC oscillator options) are also configurable. At 16 MHz, ensure 5V operation (the datasheet speed-versus-voltage curve requires 4.5-5.5V above 8 MHz) and correct fuse programming to avoid a bricked device.

Guide de sélection

Choose the ATMEGA16-16PI when you need JTAG debugging, industrial temperature range, and a through-hole 40-pin footprint for legacy sustainment or serviceable industrial boards. Choose ATMEGA16-16PC or -16PU instead when the environment is guaranteed 0C to +70C and commercial grading saves cost. Choose ATMEGA32-16PI when 16KB Flash is insufficient - it is a drop-in pin-compatible upgrade. Choose ATMEGA8535-16PI only for existing ATmega8535 boards (same footprint, smaller flash). For new designs, weigh the modern ATMEGA1609/ATMEGA1608 family (different packages, requires new PCB) or ATMEGA328P (Arduino ecosystem, DIP-28, debugWIRE only). The ATmega16 family's advantages - JTAG, 5V operation, PDIP availability - remain valid for education, industrial repair, and 5V legacy systems.

Notes de conception

For 16 MHz operation the ATMEGA16-16PI requires a 4.5-5.5V supply per the datasheet speed-voltage curve; below 8 MHz it can run from 2.7V. Decouple VCC (pin 10) and AVCC (pin 30) with 100 nF ceramics placed within a few millimeters of each pin, and connect AVCC to VCC through a 10 uH inductor or low-pass RC when ADC accuracy matters. Estimated: a 16 MHz, 25 mA typical active current on a 5V rail dissipates about 125 mV x 1 A equivalence is negligible; self-heating in PDIP-40 is not a design driver.

Although the DIP-40 is through-hole, layout still matters: keep the crystal within 20 mm of XTAL1/XTAL2 (pins 13/12) with load capacitors grounded at a single point near GND pin 11. Route the analog ground return from pin 31 back to the power supply separately from digital switching currents to protect the 10-bit ADC's effective resolution. Use ICSP header (MOSI/MISO/SCK/RESET) accessible on-board for field firmware updates via SPI programming.

Fuse misconfiguration is the leading cause of bricked ATmega16 devices: setting SPIEN off while using ICSP, or selecting an external clock CKSEL with no clock source, locks out the part. Always program fuses with a slow ISP frequency (below 1/4 of system clock) and verify CKOPT for 16 MHz full-swing operation. Also, port C doubles as JTAG by default; if you need PC2-PC5 as GPIO, clear the JTAGEN fuse or disable JTAG in software using the JTD bit written twice within four cycles.

When driving long wiring or cables from port outputs, add 100-330 ohm series resistors to limit ringing and protect against transient latch-up; AVR I/O pins tolerate ±40 mA absolute maximum but recommended operating current is ±20 mA per pin. For the TWI (I2C) bus on PC0/PC1, external pull-ups of 4.7 kohm at 100 kHz or 2.2 kohm at 400 kHz are required, as the AVR does not provide internal bus pull-ups adequate for standard-mode operation.
