ATSAMD20G17A-MN Présentation
The SAM D20G is built around the ARM Cortex-M0+ core, the smallest and most energy-efficient ARM processor available. It is positioned within the broader taxonomy as follows: ARM Cortex-M0+ -> ARM Cortex-M processor -> 32-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded system. This hierarchy places the part in the Cortex-M0+ tier aimed at cost-sensitive, low-power embedded designs that need the ARM instruction set and toolchain maturity.
Key features include the Serial Communication Interface (SERCOM) modules that are highly configurable for I2C, SPI, and UART; a 12-bit ADC with up to 12 channels; 10-bit DAC outputs; and full-speed USB 2.0 Device support on selected variants. The device operates from 1.62 V to 3.63 V across the -40C to +105C industrial temperature range, offers low-power Sleep and Standby modes drawing single-digit microampere currents, and integrates an Event System for inter-peripheral signalling without CPU intervention. The 48-QFN package provides a small footprint suitable for space-constrained designs.
Typical applications for the ATSAMD20G17A-MN include home automation endpoints, smart metering, industrial sensor nodes, low-power IoT wearables, consumer human-machine interface (HMI) controllers, and battery-powered data loggers. The combination of Cortex-M0+ processing, generous SRAM, and flexible SERCOM peripherals makes it well suited to designs where simple migration from 8-bit AVR parts is desirable.
When designing with this device, engineers should evaluate the SleepWalking and Event System features to minimize MCU wake events, place decoupling capacitors close to the multiple VDD pins, and use the exposed pad (EP) for both thermal dissipation and ground return. The ATSAMD20G17A-MN is identical to the ATSAMD20G17A-MU except for the operating temperature range (105C industrial grade vs. 125C extended grade).

Applications typiques
ATSAMD20G17A-MN convient pour 6 applications: Smart Home Automation Hubs, Industrial Sensor Nodes, Battery-Powered Wearable Devices, Smart Metering Endpoints, Consumer HMI Touch Panels, Portable Data Loggers.
Smart Home Automation Hubs
The ATSAMD20G17A-MN fits smart-home gateway endpoints because its 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ core running at 48 MHz delivers 2.46 CoreMark/MHz of compute, enough for Zigbee/Thread/BLE co-processor coordination and local sensor fusion. Its 128 KB Flash stores ZCL/Zigbee stack libraries and OTA update slots, while 16 KB SRAM holds packet buffers and a small RTOS image. The 48-QFN (7x7) footprint fits inside compact wall-switch and plug-form-factor PCBs. Sleep currents below 10 uA and the Event System let battery-powered door/window sensors run for years on a single CR2032.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Nodes
Factory-floor sensor modules benefit from the ATSAMD20G17A-MN's 12-bit ADC with up to 12 channels for simultaneous voltage, current, and temperature acquisition. The Cortex-M0+ at 48 MHz runs Modbus RTU framing and basic filtering (FIR/IIR) without off-loading to a co-processor. The -40C to +105C industrial temperature grade matches IEC 60068-2-14 thermal-shock profiles commonly required for industrial sensor deployments. On-chip SERCOM peripherals map natively to RS-485 transceivers and I2C/SPI sensors, reducing BOM cost and PCB area.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Wearable Devices
Wearable designs such as fitness bands and BLE beacons use the ATSAMD20G17A-MN for its ultra-low Sleep and Standby modes plus SleepWalking peripherals that wake the CPU only on a sensor event. The 128 KB Flash fits a Bluetooth Low Energy GATT service table, and 16 KB SRAM is sufficient for sensor hub buffering. The 48-QFN (7x7) package keeps PCB area under 50 mm^2 - critical for wrist- or chest-mounted form factors. With typical active current of 7 mA at 48 MHz and sub-microampere standby, average consumption stays well below 1 mA for most BLE beacon duty cycles.
Recommandé
Smart Metering Endpoints
Electricity, water, and gas metering endpoints adopt the ATSAMD20G17A-MN because its 12-bit ADC accuracy and SERCOM channels handle pulse counting from mechanical meter registers and serial interfaces from electronic sensors. The 128 KB Flash stores metering firmware plus wM-Bus or Wireless M-Bus protocol stacks, while 16 KB SRAM supports DLMS/COSEM frame buffering. The -40C to +105C industrial grade complies with outdoor meter enclosures in temperate climates. The Event System provides deterministic response to tamper-detection inputs without CPU latency.
Recommandé
Consumer HMI Touch Panels
Consumer appliances with capacitive-touch HMI panels use the ATSAMD20G17A-MN's SERCOM peripherals to drive TFT displays over SPI, while integrated PTC touch channels on selected variants support up to 12 self-capacitance buttons. The 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ can refresh a 240x320 TFT via DMA-assisted transfers with minimal CPU load. The 128 KB Flash stores UI assets, fonts, and graphics libraries; 16 KB SRAM holds frame buffers for compact icons. The 48-QFN package simplifies routing on compact display PCBs.
Recommandé
Portable Data Loggers
Portable data loggers for environmental monitoring leverage the ATSAMD20G17A-MN's 16 KB SRAM to buffer sensor samples before batch SD-card writes, while 128 KB Flash holds firmware, configuration profiles, and small lookup tables. The on-chip 12-bit ADC captures analog sensor outputs, and SERCOM channels drive SPI-based SD cards or I2C sensors. The Sleep mode current of a few microamperes combined with a CR123A primary cell can power a multi-year sampling logger. The 48-QFN exposed pad aids thermal dissipation during intensive write bursts.

Notes de conception
The SAM D20G integrates a 1.2 V core LDO from VDDIN. Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor on VDDIN and a separate 100 nF on each VDDIO pin, all within 2 mm of the respective pads. Keep the VDDOUT pin filtered with a 1 uF capacitor; never connect VDDOUT to external loads other than the internal core. Use a common ground plane stitched with vias around the exposed thermal pad to ensure stable regulator operation across the -40C to +105C range.
Estimated: at 48 MHz active CPU with all peripherals enabled, the device consumes ~7 mA from 3.3 V (~23 mW). Power dissipation rises to ~70 mW when SERCOMs and ADC are simultaneously active. With the 48-QFN exposed pad soldered to a 1 oz copper pour of at least 100 mm^2, theta_JA drops below 40 C/W, keeping the junction temperature rise under 3C at full active load - well within the 105C upper limit. Without the exposed pad, theta_JA exceeds 60 C/W and the part may throttle at high ambient.
Route the SWDIO and SWCLK traces as short as possible (under 50 mm) with no stubs. Place a 100 kohm pull-up on SWDIO and a 100 kohm pull-up on the RESET pin. Keep ADC analog traces away from SERCOM digital switching lines, and surround ADC inputs with a ground guard ring to achieve the full 12-bit SNR. Always stitch the 48-QFN exposed pad with a 4x4 via array on a 1.0 mm pitch to maximise thermal conduction.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum VDDIO of 3.8 V. Avoid leaving unused SERCOM pads floating - configure them as output-low or input with internal pull-up enabled to prevent shoot-through current. When migrating code from ATSAM D21 to D20, do not assume USB peripheral registers exist - the D20G does not have USB. Always initialise the GCLK peripheral before SERCOM; SERCOMs will not clock correctly without a configured GCLK source.
