ATSAML11E16A-MU Présentation

The Microchip Technology ATSAML11E16A-MU is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M23 microcontroller running at up to 32 MHz, integrating 64 KB of embedded Flash and 16 KB of SRAM in a 32-pin VQFN (5x5 mm) package with TrustZone-M security. According to the Microchip product page, it consumes less than 25 uA/MHz in active mode and less than 100 nA in sleep mode, making it the industry's lowest-power Cortex-M23 MCU with chip-level tamper resistance and ARM TrustZone technology. The device is part of the SAM L11 family, which is the first Cortex-M23 implementation to add hardware-enforced secure and non-secure code partitioning.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, volatile and non-volatile memory, peripherals, and I/O. The Cortex-M23 is ARM's smallest and most energy-efficient application processor, designed as a successor to the Cortex-M0/M0+ with branch prediction, single-cycle I/O, and an optional TrustZone-M extension. Within the SAM L11 hierarchy, ATSAML11E16A-MU sits in the high-memory tier (E = 64 KB Flash / 16 KB SRAM) versus the D14/D15/D16 variants. The L11 sits inside Microchip's MCU portfolio between the ultra-low-power SAML10 and the Cortex-M4 SAM L21 families.

Key features include integrated crypto accelerators (AES, SHA, TRNG), secure key storage, tamper detection, a 12-bit 1 Msps ADC, a 10-bit DAC, two analog comparators, an op-amp, a peripheral touch controller (PTC), and six SERCOM channels that can be configured as UART, SPI, I2C, or LIN. The device operates from 1.62 V to 3.63 V across -40 C to +85 C (industrial grade) and supports both 1.6 V and 3.3 V typical rails.

Architecture-wise, the ATSAML11E16A-MU pairs the Cortex-M23 core with Microchip's Event System, SleepWalking peripherals, and an 8-channel DMA. TrustZone-M enables secure boot and isolated execution, with secure peripherals such as the RTC and integrity check monitor (ICM) dedicated to the secure world. Hardware crypto blocks offload AES-128/256 and SHA-1/2 from software, reducing active current during TLS handshakes by an order of magnitude versus pure software implementations.

Typical applications include IoT edge nodes with secure cloud onboarding, wireless sensor nodes (paired with ATECC608B secure element or SAM W25 SoC), battery-powered smart locks and access control, secure medical sensors, asset-tracking BLE beacons, and industrial PLC safety I/O. The integrated PTC enables capacitive touch interfaces for HMI front panels without an external touch IC.

Designers should evaluate power budgets carefully: at 3.3 V, 32 MHz, and full peripheral activity, the budget of <25 uA/MHz implies roughly 800 uA active current; sleep mode below 100 nA enables multi-year coin-cell operation when SleepWalking peripherals are used. Always provide a 100 nF decoupling capacitor on each VDD pin and a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on the main rail.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in package-compatible alternatives, and practical TrustZone design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, providing a single source of truth for engineers evaluating the SAM L11 family.

🧩

IoT Edge Node with Secure Cloud Onboarding

The ATSAML11E16A-MU is well-suited for IoT edge nodes requiring secure cloud onboarding because of its integrated ARM TrustZone-M hardware isolation and hardware AES-256/SHA-256 accelerators. With 64 KB Flash and 16 KB SRAM, it can host a TLS 1.3 client stack plus a secure bootloader without external memory. The <25 uA/MHz active current and <100 nA sleep current allow coin-cell powered sensor nodes to last 5+ years. Place the MCU between a 3.3 V LDO and a wireless module such as the ATECC608B secure element or SAM W25 SoC, with the TrustZone secure world owning key storage and the non-secure world running the application logic. Hardware crypto blocks offload TLS handshakes, reducing peak active current by an order of magnitude versus pure software AES.

🔒

Battery-Powered Smart Lock and Access Control

The ATSAML11E16A-MU fits battery-powered smart locks thanks to its <100 nA sleep current and integrated tamper detection. The 12-bit 1 Msps ADC reads keypad or sensor inputs while the integrated op-amp conditions analog signals without external components. TrustZone-M isolates credential storage in secure Flash, with secure boot preventing firmware rollback attacks. The device's 32 MHz Cortex-M23 core executes AES-256 in hardware, supporting sub-100 ms BLE authentication cycles. With a typical 2,400 mAh Li-ion battery, expect 18-24 months of operation between charges when the MCU sleeps 99% of the time and wakes only on keypad or BLE events. The 32-VQFN package fits inside standard lock cylinder housings.

📱

Capacitive Touch HMI Front Panel

Notes de conception

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor on each VDD pin (pin 6 and pin 15) within 2 mm of the package, plus a single 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on the main 3.3 V rail. The SAM L11 is sensitive to supply ripple during SleepWalking events; insufficient decoupling can trigger spurious ADC wake-ups. For battery-powered designs, route the coin-cell ground return through a star-ground topology and avoid sharing ground with high-current loads.

Keep the 32.768 kHz crystal traces under 5 mm and surround them with a ground pour isolated from noisy digital signals. Place the SWD/SWCLK pins (31, 32) on a dedicated debug header with a 100 ohm series termination for reliable programming at 32 MHz. The exposed pad on the 32-VQFN package must be soldered to a ground pad of at least 10 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill) for adequate heat dissipation at full 32 MHz operation.

Estimated: enabling TrustZone-M after first programming requires a chip erase that also wipes the user Flash - plan secure/non-secure Flash partitioning BEFORE initial programming. Do not use the PA27 pin (pin 29) for general I/O if you need the bootloader entry function, as the BOOTPROT feature multiplexes this pin. When migrating from SAML10 to SAML11, note that the SERCOM pin assignments differ - re-validate I/O mapping with the Microchip PinView tool before layout.
