ATSAML11E16A-MUT Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, memory (Flash for code, SRAM for data), and a rich set of peripherals (timers, ADC, communication interfaces, GPIO) on one die. MCUs belong to the broader family of embedded processors and dominate low-power, real-time control applications. The Cortex-M23 is Arm's smallest and most energy-efficient TrustZone-capable core, positioned between the Cortex-M0+ (no TrustZone) and the Cortex-M33 (with DSP and FPU), making the SAM L11 ideal for secure, low-power IoT endpoints. The 'SAM' family hypernym chain: SAM L11 -> Cortex-M23 MCU -> ARM-based microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor IC.
Key differentiating features include ARM TrustZone for hardware-enforced isolation between secure and non-secure code, a Secure Boot Loader, a hardware Crypto Accelerator (AES-128/256, SHA-256, TRNG), up to 51 GPIO, a 12-bit 1 MSPS ADC, and a 10-bit 350 kSPS DAC. The 32-VQFN package has a thermal resistance of approximately 30 C/W, and the device supports Sleep, Standby, and Backup modes with fast wake-up times below 2 us from Sleep. It is qualified to industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) and is RoHS compliant.
Typical applications include secure IoT sensor nodes, smart meters, wearable health monitors, secure authentication peripherals, home automation hubs, and battery-powered edge AI inference devices. The TrustZone and crypto accelerator make it especially suited for products requiring end-to-end secure firmware update (SUOTA) and tamper-resistant credential storage.
When designing with this MCU, allocate at least one decoupling capacitor (100 nF) per VDD pin and place the exposed pad (EP) to a large ground copper pour for thermal dissipation. For secure applications, configure the TrustZone Attribute Unit (TAU) during boot to lock peripheral and memory access rights, and use the Boot ROM Secure Boot Loader to verify application firmware signatures before execution. Programming is supported by Microchip Studio, MPLAB X IDE, and Atmel START.

Notes de conception
Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor as close as possible to every VDD, VDDANA, and VDDIO pin (within 2 mm trace length). Add a single bulk 4.7 uF X5R capacitor on the VDDANA rail and another 4.7 uF on VDDIO. The exposed thermal pad (EP) on the 32-VQFN package must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour of at least 25 mm^2 for thermal dissipation. Place the EP via array (at least 9 vias in a 3x3 grid) directly under the pad to maximize heat transfer. Keep high-speed SERCOM signal traces short and routed over a continuous reference ground plane to avoid EMI.
The ATSAML11E16A-MUT integrates a DC-DC buck converter and an LDO. For battery applications drawing less than 10 mA average, use the DC-DC buck mode by connecting an external 4.7 uH inductor between VSW and the LDO input pin; this reduces core current consumption by 30-50% compared to LDO-only mode. For designs where the MCU is always powered from a stable 3.3 V rail, LDO-only mode simplifies the BOM by eliminating the inductor. Estimated: a 3.3 V -> 1.2 V buck conversion at 5 mA load achieves ~85% efficiency versus ~36% for the LDO, saving ~17 mW of dissipation at the same load.
Do not connect the EP (exposed pad) to a non-ground net, or thermal performance will degrade and ground bounce will increase. Do not apply external voltage to any GPIO before VDDIO ramps up, or latch-up may occur. For secure boot to function, NVM Software Calibration Row bits must be configured before the first reset release. When migrating from ATSAML10 to SAM L11, the TrustZone Configuration Register (TZCTRL) defaults to non-secure after reset - explicitly call NVMCTRL_OTPRead() and configure the TrustZone Attribute Unit (TAU) during early boot to lock peripheral access. Pin 22 and 23 (SWDIO, SWCLK) are required for debug access; do not repurpose these unless fuse-locked for production.
The SERCOM peripheral pins support either I2C, SPI, or UART modes configured via software - re-mapping SERCOM channels after PCB layout is straightforward but may require gate-array rerouting on dense boards. For I2C lines above 400 kHz, use 4.7 kohm pull-ups to VDDIO; for I2C Fast Mode Plus (1 MHz) use 1 kohm pull-ups. The 12-bit ADC input impedance is typically 70 kohm at 1 MSPS - drive from a low-impedance op-amp buffer for full-scale accuracy. The SWD debug lines (SWDIO, SWCLK) should be 50-ohm impedance-controlled if traces exceed 50 mm; place a 100 ohm series termination at the MCU end to dampen ringing.
