DP83848KSQ/NOPB Présentation
An Ethernet PHY is the physical layer transceiver that interfaces between a digital MAC (Media Access Controller) and the physical twisted-pair cable. It handles encoding, serialization, line driving, and reception of Ethernet frames. The DP83848x family belongs to the PHYTER series, within the broader hierarchy of Ethernet interface ICs -> network interface ICs -> communication interface ICs -> integrated circuits.
Key features include Auto-MDIX for automatic crossover detection, eliminating the need for crossover cables. The device supports both 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX with performance exceeding IEEE specifications, including operation beyond 137 meters of Cat-V cable. It offers low power consumption and a small footprint suitable for space-constrained designs, with industrial temperature support from -40C to +85C.
The DP83848K integrates a digital adaptive equalizer, echo canceller, and baseline wander correction to ensure reliable data transmission. The device includes an MDIO serial management interface for configuration and status monitoring, with support for dynamic control of Auto-MDIX and LED indicators. The architecture is built on a low-power 3.3V CMOS process, achieving IEEE 802.3u compliance.
Typical applications include industrial control systems, embedded networking, IP cameras, IoT gateways, factory automation controllers, and building automation. The industrial temperature range makes it suitable for harsh environments such as outdoor enclosures, machine-to-machine communication, and test equipment with extended thermal requirements.
When designing with this PHY, ensure proper isolation transformer selection and 50 ohm termination resistors for the magnetics interface. Careful PCB layout is required to minimize EMI and maintain signal integrity on the differential pairs. Notes de conception
Route the MII/RMII traces between the MAC and PHY as short as possible with matched lengths (within 50 mil for MII). Keep digital traces away from the analog TX/RX differential pairs and use a continuous ground plane under the MII bus. Place the 25 MHz crystal within 5 mm of the XI/XO pins with short traces and guard ring to ground. Decouple each VDD33A and VDD33D pin with a 0.1uF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin.
Do not omit the center-tap capacitors on the magnetics; these are required for proper PHY operation. Verify the isolation transformer ratio (1:1) matches the DP83848K requirements. Some early designs failed because designers used 1CT:1CT instead of 1:1 center-tapped magnetics. Also ensure proper 50 ohm termination on the cable-side differential pairs with appropriate common-mode termination to prevent reflections.
Maintain 100 ohm differential impedance on the TX and RX pairs routed to the magnetics. Use AC-coupling capacitors (0.1uF) on each differential pair if required by the magnetics vendor. Keep these traces symmetric and avoid crossing split ground planes. For EMI reduction, add common-mode chokes at the RJ45 connector side of the magnetics.
