DRV8301DCAR Présentation
A three-phase gate driver is a power-management IC that converts low-power PWM control signals from a microcontroller into the high-current gate-drive signals required by the high-side and low-side MOSFETs of each inverter leg. It sits between the digital control domain (logic-level PWMs) and the high-power motor domain (tens of volts and tens of amps), and is therefore classified within the broader hierarchy of motor drivers > motion controllers > power management ICs > semiconductor. By integrating the gate drive, current sensing, and auxiliary supply, the DRV8301 collapses what would otherwise be three separate ICs into a single device, simplifying BLDC inverter design.
Key features include: a programmable 5 mA to 60 mA gate-drive current with adaptive dead-time insertion to prevent shoot-through; integrated dual current-shunt amplifiers with adjustable gain (10/20/40/80 V/V) and 5 µs settling time for FOC torque control; a 1.5 A, 0.8 V to 8.5 V adjustable buck regulator; SPI-configurable protection (overcurrent, overtemperature, undervoltage, gate-drive fault); and an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C. The HTSSOP-56 PowerPAD package offers θJA ≈ 31 °C/W when the exposed pad is soldered to sufficient copper area.
Architecture-wise, the DRV8301 pairs a charge-pump-derived high-side bias supply with a bootstrap-capacitor-per-phase design, allowing 100% duty-cycle operation of the high-side FETs without external floating rails. The current-sense amplifiers use continuous-time chopper-stabilized op-amps to minimize offset drift, which directly improves the low-speed torque accuracy of sensorless FOC schemes. The SPI port allows in-system tuning of dead-time, current-sense gain, OC threshold, and buck VOUT, enabling firmware-controlled optimization for different MOSFET choices.
Typical applications include drone (UAV) ESCs, e-bike / e-scooter traction drives, cordless power tools, HVAC fans and pumps, and small industrial servo drives. The DRV8301 is also the gateway IC on TI's well-known DRV8301-69M-KIT reference design for InstaSPIN-FOC motor control. When designing with this part, follow TI's MOSFET short-circuit ruggedness guidance and lay out the PowerPAD with at least 1 in² of 2-oz copper to keep the gate-driver junction within safe limits.

Applications typiques
DRV8301DCAR convient pour 6 applications: UAV / Drone Electronic Speed Controller (ESC), E-Bike and E-Scooter Traction Drive, Cordless Power Tool BLDC Motor Drive, HVAC Fan and Pump Variable-Frequency Drive, Small Industrial Servo and Robotics Drive, Sensorless BLDC Compressor Drive (Refrigeration).
UAV / Drone Electronic Speed Controller (ESC)
The DRV8301DCAR's 8 V to 60 V VM range, 100% high-side duty cycle via charge pump, and dual integrated current shunt amplifiers make it ideal for 6S to 12S LiPo drone ESCs up to ~30 A continuous per phase. Compared with discrete gate-driver + op-amp designs, the DRV8301 collapses three ICs into one and reduces PCB area by ~40%, which is critical for weight-constrained multirotor frames. Its SPI-tunable dead-time and gate-drive current let firmware optimize switching losses against MOSFET rise/fall times across the 4 kHz to 50 kHz PWM range typical of multirotor FOC.
Recommandé
E-Bike and E-Scooter Traction Drive
For 24 V to 48 V e-mobility traction drives, the DRV8301DCAR's 1.5 A integrated buck powers the host MCU directly from the battery, eliminating a discrete POL regulator and saving ~$0.50 BOM. Its industrial -40 °C to +125 °C range handles underhood thermal stress, and the SPI-tunable OC threshold lets the same hardware support 250 W commuter e-bikes and 1 kW e-scooters with only firmware changes. The dual current-shunt amplifiers deliver the precise low-speed torque needed for hill-start and regen-braking FOC modes.
Recommandé
Cordless Power Tool BLDC Motor Drive
The DRV8301DCAR's shoot-through protection and adaptive dead-time (programmable 100 ns to 500 ns via SPI) protect cordless drill and impact-driver MOSFETs during the rapid load transients of stall events. Its 65 V absolute-max VM tolerance survives the inductive kickback of 18 V to 36 V tool batteries, and the integrated dual current-sense amplifiers enable sensorless FOC for smoother variable-speed trigger response. Engineers can use the same DRV8301DCAR design across 12 V, 18 V, and 36 V platforms with only MOSFET and buck-VOUT register changes.
Recommandé
HVAC Fan and Pump Variable-Frequency Drive
The DRV8301DCAR's wide VM range (8 V to 60 V) covers 24 V building-automation fans and 48 V commercial-pump drives in a single platform, and its SPI-monitorable fault registers integrate directly with building-management fault logging. The dual low-offset current-shunt amplifiers (drift <5 µV/°C) provide the precision torque-loop feedback needed for energy-efficient EC fan operation under part-load conditions. The HTSSOP-56 PowerPAD dissipates the gate-driver heat through the inverter heatsink, eliminating an external gate-driver thermal management layer.
Recommandé
Small Industrial Servo and Robotics Drive
The DRV8301DCAR's SPI-configurable current-sense gain (4.6 V/V to 80 V/V) adapts to low-current collaborative-robot joint motors and high-current CNC-spindle servos using the same hardware. Its 100% high-side duty cycle eliminates the audible torque ripple that plagues bootstrap-only drivers at low RPM, which is essential for smooth robotic-arm trajectory tracking. The integrated 1.5 A buck can also power encoder and Hall-sensor rails, further simplifying 24 V to 48 V servo designs.
Recommandé
Sensorless BLDC Compressor Drive (Refrigeration)
Refrigeration compressors demand reliable sensorless starting under refrigerant-loaded rotor conditions. The DRV8301DCAR's integrated dual current-shunt amplifiers and SPI-tunable OC threshold enable the high-injection-frequency FOC starts required for HVAC compressors, while its -40 °C cold-start rating covers outdoor refrigeration environments. The integrated 1.5 A buck powers the host MCU and PFC companion circuitry from the rectified mains stage, reducing total inverter BOM cost versus discrete gate-driver designs.

Notes de conception
The HTSSOP-56 PowerPAD dissipates up to ~2 W continuous with 1 in² of 2-oz copper at the PowerPAD per the TI datasheet thermal table. Estimated: at 25 °C ambient with 1 in² copper, θJA ≈ 31 °C/W, so 2 W gate-drive dissipation produces a 62 °C junction temperature rise - within the 125 °C max. For designs exceeding 2 W gate losses (large MOSFET arrays, high PWM frequency), increase the copper area to 2 in² or add thermal vias to an inner plane.
Place the VM bulk capacitor (≥1 µF X7R 100 V plus 100 µF electrolytic) within 5 mm of pins 1 and 12. Keep the high-current phase traces (DL_A/B/C, SH_A/B/C) short and wide (≥40 mil / 2-oz copper) to minimize parasitic inductance that causes HV overshoot above the 65 V abs-max VM rating. According to TI's layout guide, place bootstrap capacitors (≥0.1 µF X7R) directly adjacent to BST_x and SH_x pins with the ground side tied to the PowerPAD copper pour.
Do not exceed the 65 V absolute-max VM rating during inductive load transients; add a TVS diode (≥68 V clamp) or snubber on the VM rail for motor systems with long cable harnesses. Avoid leaving the SPI lines floating when SPI mode is unused - tie SDI and SCLK to GND through 10 kΩ resistors to prevent spurious register writes from injecting noise into the gate-driver dead-time registers. The nFAULT and OCTW outputs are open-drain and require external pull-ups to the logic supply.
