DRV8350SRTVT Présentation
What is a three-phase smart gate driver? A three-phase smart gate driver is an integrated power-stage controller that converts low-power PWM logic signals from a microcontroller into high-current gate-drive signals for the three half-bridges of a three-phase BLDC or PMSM motor. It sits between the digital control domain (MCU + PWM) and the power domain (MOSFETs + motor windings) inside the power-management and motor-control IC hierarchy. The "smart" designation means the driver handles dead-time insertion, shoot-through protection, current sensing, and fault reporting autonomously, removing timing-critical tasks from the MCU.
Key features include adjustable slew-rate control for EMI tuning, a VGS handshake mechanism that detects MOSFET readiness, integrated protection (UVLO, overcurrent, thermal shutdown, and gate-drive short protection), an SPI interface for configuration and telemetry, and an integrated 3.3V/5V buck regulator for auxiliary supply. The DRV8350S variant provides the SPI control interface, while the DRV8350H variant uses hardware pins.
The DRV8350SRTVT uses a charge-pump architecture for the high-side gate supply that supports 100% duty-cycle operation. Triple low-side current-shunt amplifiers enable precise current sensing for Field-Oriented Control (FOC) and trapezoidal commutation. The device operates across -40C to +125C junction temperature and includes comprehensive fault diagnostics accessible via SPI status readback.
Typical applications include cordless power tools (drills, saws, leaf blowers), e-bike and e-scooter traction drives, HVAC blower fans, robotic vacuum cleaners, small drones and BLDC pumps, and white-goods motor control. The SPI interface enables closed-loop tuning of gate-drive strength to balance EMI versus switching loss.
When designing with the DRV8350SRTVT, ensure sufficient decoupling on VM (1 uF + 100 nF X7R), place gate-drive resistors close to the IC outputs, and use the integrated buck regulator for housekeeping supply. Drive strength is selectable via SPI, allowing the same BOM to cover 1 kW to 5 kW motor platforms.

Notes de conception
Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic capacitor and a 100 nF X7R capacitor as close as possible to the VM pin (pin 21) to PGND. The 1 uF bulk capacitor handles instantaneous gate-charge current during MOSFET turn-on, while the 100 nF capacitor shunts high-frequency switching noise. Use wide copper pours on VM and PGND to minimize parasitic inductance. A TVS diode rated above 102 V (e.g., SMAJ100A) protects against load-dump and back-EMF events when the motor acts as a generator.
The WQFN-32 (RTV) package has an exposed thermal pad that MUST be soldered to a copper pour on the PCB for heatsinking. Estimated: with theta_JA of approximately 32 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC board, the IC dissipates 1.5W at full 1A gate-drive current and 25 kHz PWM, yielding approximately 48C temperature rise above ambient. For continuous operation above 80C ambient, expand the thermal pad copper to at least 1 square inch on top and bottom layers connected by thermal vias.
Keep the high-side gate-drive traces (GH_A, GH_B, GH_C) and bootstrap traces (BST_A/B/C) short, ideally under 25 mm, to minimize parasitic inductance that can cause gate-drive ringing and MOSFET avalanche. Place the bootstrap capacitor (100 nF X7R) as close as possible to each BST/SH pin pair. Separate analog ground (AGND, pin 14) from power ground (PGND, pin 22) and connect them at a single point under the IC exposed pad to avoid digital-switching noise coupling into the current-shunt amplifiers.
Do not operate the DRV8350SRTVT below the UVLO threshold of approximately 8 V - the gate-drive outputs will not have sufficient headroom and the external MOSFETs may operate in the linear region, causing excessive heat. Avoid leaving the BST pins floating; each high-side driver needs its own bootstrap capacitor for proper high-side gate-drive generation. Do not exceed 102 V on VM, including load-dump transients - use a TVS above 100V working surface. When reading SPI status registers, mask unused bits and check the FAULT pin separately for hardware interrupt response.
For SPI communication at 1 MHz and higher, place 33 ohm series termination resistors on SCLK, SDI, and SDO traces to dampen reflections on long board traces. Keep SPI traces away from the high-side gate-drive switching nodes (GH_A/B/C, BST_A/B/C) to avoid coupling noise into the SPI bus. The nSCS pin should be pulled high with a 100 kohm resistor to VCC during power-up and held low only when SPI transactions are in progress to prevent false SPI detection. The nFAULT pin is open-drain and requires an external pull-up.
