DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML Présentation

The Microchip Technology DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML is a 16-bit digital signal controller (DSC) from the dsPIC33FJ32GP102 family delivering 16 MIPS performance, 32KB (11K x 24) of Flash program memory, and 2KB of RAM, housed in a 28-pin VQFN (ML) 6x6 mm package with exposed thermal pad and operating from a 3.3V supply at up to 32 MHz Fcy-based clocking.

A digital signal controller combines the compute architecture of a microcontroller with DSP-grade math capability. In the product hierarchy, the dsPIC33F sits between general-purpose MCUs and dedicated DSPs: it executes a modified Harvard, 16-bit instruction-word/24-bit data-word pipeline with hardware DSP multiply-accumulate (MAC) instructions, making it a single-chip solution for motor control, digital power, and signal conditioning where both control logic and fast math are needed.

Key differentiating features include the 40-bit accumulator DSP engine with single-cycle MAC, hardware division support, 16 MIPS sustained throughput, and the Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) scheme that lets designers remap digital peripherals to available I/O pins - a major advantage in pin-limited 28-pin packages. On-chip peripherals include UART, SPI, and I2C ports, input capture/output compare channels, a high-speed 10-bit ADC, and an on-chip regulator requiring only a single external capacitor on the VCAP pin.

Architecturally, the dsPIC33F core runs from an internal fast RC oscillator or external crystal/PLL combinations, providing flexible clock generation up to the rated MIPS ceiling. In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) and in-circuit debugging are supported via just two I/O pins plus reset, compatible with low-cost tools such as MPLAB SNAP, PICkit 3/4, and ICD 3/4.

Typical applications include sensorless and brushed DC motor control, digital power supplies (LLC, PFC), electronic lighting ballasts, and general-purpose embedded control that benefits from DSP math for filtering.

Design consideration: the internal regulator requires a 4.7 uF to 10 uF, 16V low-ESR capacitor on VCAP; this pin must never be tied to VDD, a frequent root cause of non-startup in new layouts.

Applications typiques

DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML convient pour 6 applications: Brushed and Stepper Motor Control, Digital Power Supplies (PFC, LLC), Sensor Signal Conditioning and Filtering, Lighting Ballasts and LED Drivers, Embedded Industrial Control Nodes, Portable and Battery-Powered Instruments.

🏭

Brushed and Stepper Motor Control

The DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML fits motor control because its 16 MIPS core with single-cycle DSP MAC executes current-loop PID and trajectory math deterministically, while output compare channels generate PWM and input capture channels read quadrature or hall feedback from the same 28-pin QFN. In a brushed-DC servo, the 10-bit ADC samples the shunt-derived current each PWM cycle, the DSP engine computes the duty correction, and loop rates in the tens of kHz are achievable. For sensorless designs, the ADC and comparators support BEMF zero-crossing detection. When complementary PWM with hardware dead time is required, the pin-compatible DSPIC33FJ32MC102-I/ML swaps in without any PCB change.

⚡

Digital Power Supplies (PFC, LLC)

Digital power conversion benefits directly from this DSC's architecture: the 16 MIPS dsPIC33F core closes voltage and current loops at switching frequency with single-cycle MAC operations for compensator math, while the 10-bit ADC provides feedback sampling triggerable from timer events for deterministic phase alignment with the PWM period. The 32KB Flash holds compensators, soft-start, and protection state machines; the 2KB RAM handles the control state and fault logs. At 3.3V logic with PPS-remappable pins, gate-driver interfaces route cleanly on the 6x6 mm QFN. The on-chip regulator simplifies the power tree - only the VCAP capacitor (4.7-10 uF, 16V, ESR <5 Ohm) is required, per datasheet 70000652f.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning and Filtering

For sensor nodes that need onboard math, the DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML replaces a separate MCU-plus-DSP pairing: its hardware DSP engine performs FIR/IIR filtering and fixed-point scaling in real time while the general-purpose core handles protocol and housekeeping. The 10-bit ADC multiplexes several analog inputs (AN0-AN5 class channels with external VREF+ support), and results are processed through the 40-bit accumulator without software overflow handling. UART, SPI, and I2C interfaces - remappable anywhere on available pins via PPS - forward conditioned data to host systems. Operating from -40C to +85C at 3.3V, it suits industrial sensor transmitters where a single 6x6 mm QFN covers acquisition, computation, and communication.

💡

Lighting Ballasts and LED Drivers

Electronic ballast and LED driver designs leverage this DSC for closed-loop current regulation, dimming protocols, and PFC stages in one controller. At 16 MIPS, the core runs average-current-mode control at the converter switching frequency, with the DSP MAC handling compensator multiplication each cycle. Output compare channels produce phase-shifted or frequency-modulated PWM for dimming, and the 10-bit ADC samples output current and bus voltage with timer-synchronized conversion. The 32KB Flash stores DALI/0-10V dimming stacks alongside the control loop. Its -40C to +85C rating covers enclosed luminaire temperatures, and the exposed-pad 28-QFN (6x6) sinks heat into the PCB for reliable 3.3V operation.

🏭

Embedded Industrial Control Nodes

As a general-purpose industrial controller, the part offers an attractive balance: 32KB Flash runs protocol stacks (Modbus RTU over UART, sensor polling over I2C/SPI) plus application logic, while the DSP capability accelerates any onboard math such as scaling, calibration curves, or trending filters. Peripheral Pin Select lets UART, SPI, and I2C land on whichever RP pins the board layout favors, easing routing on dense 28-pin boards. ICSP programming through MPLAB SNAP enables field firmware updates from just the MCLR/PGD/PGC pins. The 3.3V, -40C to +85C industrial rating and RoHS-compliant 28-QFN package make it a drop-in fit for legacy dsPIC33-based control boards in factory equipment.

📱

Portable and Battery-Powered Instruments

Handheld instruments benefit from the internal FRC oscillator, which eliminates the crystal and its cost in accuracy-tolerant designs, and from the single-supply 3.0-3.6V operation that matches a single lithium cell with an LDO. The 16 MIPS core delivers responsive UI and measurement math, the 10-bit ADC captures battery voltage and sensor channels, and low-overhead fixed-point DSP filtering cleans noisy transducer signals without external components. The compact 6x6 mm QFN with exposed pad conserves PCB area in pen-style or pocket instruments. In-circuit debug via MPLAB SNAP uses only two spare pins, keeping the enclosure sealed during development, while the 2KB RAM supports averaging buffers and display formatting.

What is the price of DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML?
As of 2026-09-27, aggregate distributor pricing for DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML ranges from about $0.01 to $3.32 per unit for quantity 1, according to easybom's 13-distributor comparison. On XAIPART the unit price at qty 1 is $3.32, stepping down to $2.30 at 1,000 pieces and $2.15 at 3,000 pieces (tape-and-reel standard quantity). Exact pricing varies with stock location and exchange rates, so request a live quote for volume commitments.
Is DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML in stock, and what is the lead time?
Availability is generally good: distributor listings such as Hotenda and DigiKey show this part as an actively stocked item, and easybom reports 13 distributors offering stock. As of 2026-09-27, XAIPART quotes this part on request with typical delivery of 1-3 weeks for in-region distributor stock. Because the 'T' tape-and-reel version targets production volume, small prototype quantities are often cheaper as the tube/packaged non-T variant; confirm real-time stock before scheduling a production build.
What is the difference between DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML and DSPIC33FJ32GP102-I/ML?
The only difference is packaging: the 'T' suffix denotes tape-and-reel delivery for automated assembly, while the non-T part ships in trays/tubes. Both are the identical die - 32KB Flash, 2KB RAM, 16 MIPS, 3.3V, 28-QFN (6x6) ML package, -40C to +85C. They are electrically and mechanically interchangeable on the same PCB footprint; choose the T version for production pick-and-place reels and the non-T version for hand-placed prototypes.
DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML vs DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-E/ML - which should I use?
The difference is the temperature grade. The '-I' industrial part is rated -40C to +85C, while the '-E' extended part is rated to +125C, suiting automotive bays, motor-drive enclosures, and outdoor equipment. Both share the identical 28-QFN (6x6) footprint, pinout, 32KB Flash, and 16 MIPS core, so the E-grade is a true drop-in upgrade when your thermal analysis predicts junction temperatures above roughly 100C. If ambient stays below 70C, the cheaper I-grade is sufficient per Microchip's ratings.
What is the best drop-in replacement for DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML?
The closest drop-in is DSPIC33FJ32GP102-I/ML, the identical die in the same 28-QFN (6x6) package differing only in packaging (tube versus reel). Within the same footprint, DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-E/ML offers the +125C extended grade, DSPIC33FJ32GP102-I/ML (MC variant) swaps ADC/LCD-oriented peripherals for motor-control peripherals with the same pins, DSPIC33FJ16GP102-I/ML halves Flash to 16KB, and DSPIC33FJ64GP102-I/ML doubles it to 64KB - all pin-to-pin compatible per the 70000652f datasheet.
What is the best lower-cost Microchip equivalent for DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML in a cost-down project?
For cost-down within the same 28-QFN footprint, the DSPIC33FJ16GP102-I/ML is the standard choice: pin-to-pin compatible with the same DSP core, 16 MIPS, and peripherals, but with 16KB of Flash instead of 32KB. If your compiled code and fixed-point tables fit under 16KB, you lose nothing electrically. Note it is not a cross-brand substitution but a same-family variant, so reprogramming is limited only to your application image - the linker memory map and PPS configuration stay identical, minimizing revalidation effort.
When should I choose DSPIC33FJ32GP102 over a general-purpose PIC18 or ARM Cortex-M0 MCU?
Choose the dsPIC33FJ32GP102 when your application mixes control logic with sustained fixed-point math - PID loops with filtering, FOC motor control, or digital power compensation - where the single-cycle 40-bit-accumulator MAC at 16 MIPS outperforms similarly priced MCUs without a DSP engine. Choose a PIC18 when only simple logic is needed at lower cost, and an ARM Cortex-M when you need 32-bit headroom, RTOS ecosystems, or higher clock speeds. The dsPIC33 family also offers deterministic single-cycle multiply behavior attractive in control-loop timing budgets.
Why does the DSPIC33FJ32GP102 not start up, and what is the VCAP pin requirement?
The most common non-startup cause is incorrect VCAP connection. According to the Microchip datasheet 70000652f, the on-chip regulator output requires a low-ESR (<5 Ohm) capacitor between 4.7 uF and 10 uF rated 16V on the VCAP pin, and VCAP must NOT be connected to VDD. Missing, undersized, or high-ESR VCAP capacitors, or shorting VCAP to VDD, prevent the internal core regulator from starting. Verify this pin first when a new 28-QFN board fails to run or fails ICSP programming.
How do I program and debug the DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML?
Programming and debugging use In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) over the MCLR, VDD, VSS, PGD, and PGC pins - two device I/O pins plus reset. Compatible tools include the MPLAB SNAP (which connects via high-speed USB 2.0 to an 8-pin SIL connector, per Microchip's product page), PICkit 3/4, and ICD 3/4 within the MPLAB X IDE. Reserve the PGD/PGC pins on your schematic header even if reused in application; this preserves field firmware updates and in-circuit debugging without board rework.
Is DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes. The DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML is offered by Microchip as a RoHS-compliant, lead-free product; the ML (QFN) package uses matte-tin leadframe finish suitable for standard reflow profiles. Distributor listings on DigiKey and Mouser classify it under RoHS-compliant categories. Halogen-free and REACH declarations should be confirmed from Microchip's current product page or a Certificate of Conformance, since Microchip updates environmental documentation periodically and legacy grade documentation may differ.
What is the ADC resolution and analog capability of DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML?
The device integrates Microchip's high-speed 10-bit ADC with multiple multiplexed analog inputs including AN0 through AN5 class channels plus VREF+/VREF- external reference support on the 28-pin ML package. For motor and power applications, the ADC can be triggered by timers or output-compare events for deterministic sampling in control loops. If 12-bit resolution is required, consider the dsPIC33FJ12/16/32 MC-series variants in the same package, or add an external ADC over SPI. Analog input count on this 28-pin part is limited by pin availability.
Can DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML be used for motor control applications?
Yes, and it is a classic choice for brushed-DC, stepper, and sensorless BLDC control. The GP variant provides input capture channels for quadrature/hall decoding, output compare channels usable for PWM, and the 10-bit ADC for current and BEMF sampling, all coordinated at 16 MIPS with DSP MAC instructions for the control-loop math. For dedicated motor features such as complementary PWM with dead-time insertion, the pin-compatible DSPIC33FJ32MC102-I/ML in the same 28-QFN package is the purpose-built alternative - the swap requires no PCB change.
What clock and oscillator options does the DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML support?
The device supports the internal fast RC (FRC) oscillator, external crystal/ceramic resonator on OSC1/OSC2, and internal PLL combinations, generating up to the 16 MIPS instruction rate (32 MHz-class system clocking). OSC2 can alternatively output the instruction clock (CLKO) for system synchronization, and the secondary crystal (SOSC) pins support Timer1 low-power clocking. For cost-sensitive designs the FRC removes the crystal entirely; for UART/CAN timing accuracy a crystal with PLL is recommended. PPS remapping then routes clocked peripherals onto available RP pins.

Guide de sélection

Choose DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-I/ML when you need 16-bit DSP-grade control in a compact 28-QFN at industrial temperatures: its 32KB Flash fits most control-loop applications with protocol stacks, and the tape-and-reel format suits automated production. Select the non-T DSPIC33FJ32GP102-I/ML for prototypes (same die, tube packaging). Move to DSPIC33FJ32GP102T-E/ML when ambient exceeds ~85C - motor drives and sealed luminaires. Choose DSPIC33FJ16GP102-I/ML for pure cost-down if your binary fits 16KB, or DSPIC33FJ64GP102-I/ML when code growth is expected; both are pin-to-pin. Pick the MC-series variant (DSPIC33FJ32MC102-I/ML) when hardware complementary PWM with dead time is required. Do not choose this part if you need 5V I/O or more than 28 pins - step up to the 44/64-pin dsPIC33FJ family members instead.

Notes de conception

The on-chip core regulator requires a low-ESR (<5 Ohm) capacitor between 4.7 uF and 10 uF, rated 16V, on the VCAP pin to ground. Per datasheet 70000652f, VCAP must never be connected to VDD - doing so prevents the regulator from starting and is the single most common bring-up failure on new dsPIC33F layouts. Place the VCAP capacitor within 5 mm of the pin with a solid via to ground. Decouple each VDD pin with 0.1 uF ceramic plus one bulk 10 uF per board.

The 28-QFN (6x6) exposed pad should be soldered to a ground pour array of 3x3 or 4x4 vias for thermal dissipation and ground return - do not leave the pad floating even though the part is low power. For ICSP, route MCLR, PGD, and PGC to a 5-pin or 6-pin header (adding VDD and VSS) before the pins are consumed by peripherals; the MPLAB SNAP reference design uses an 8-pin SIL connector. Keep the crystal (if used) within 10 mm of OSC1/OSC2 with guard ground.

Configure Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) early and lock it: un-locked PPS allows runtime remapping that can silently disconnect UART or SPI pins if a software fault writes the PPS registers. Also note that analog-capable pins (AN0-AN5) power up as analog inputs - set the AD1PCFG register to digital before reading digital levels, or inputs will read indeterminate. For oscillator safety, enable the Failsafe Clock Monitor and Clock Switching configuration bits so a crystal failure falls back to FRC instead of hanging the application.
