IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 Présentation
A pipelined ADC is a high-speed successive-approximation architecture that uses multiple low-resolution stages to digitize an analog signal at sample rates well beyond what SAR (successive-approximation register) converters can achieve. Pipelined ADCs sit in the data-converter hierarchy between SAR (low-power, high-resolution) and flash (highest speed, lowest resolution) converters, enabling telecommunications, imaging, and instrumentation front ends. The 12-bit 125 MSPS class targets cost-sensitive wideband designs where 10-12 bits of dynamic range suffice.
Key features of the IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 include a low-noise track-and-hold front end, selectable power-saving mode, single 3 V analog supply operation, separate 1.8 V digital supply for low-power LVDS/CMOS outputs, and 40-pin VFQFPN packaging with a thermal pad. Operating range covers -40 °C to +85 °C ambient. The part supports selectable CMOS or LVDS DDR digital output modes for flexible interface to FPGAs and DSPs.
At 125 MSPS the converter's internal pipeline clock multiplies up from an external reference, and the track-and-hold front end is bandwidth-limited to slightly above Nyquist to balance aliasing rejection with passband flatness. The -C18 speed grade designation indicates the 125 MSPS bin with the 1.8 V digital-output supply configuration. The exposed thermal pad on the 40-VFQFPN package must be soldered to a ground copper pour to achieve the rated thermal resistance.
Typical applications include basestation receive paths, medical ultrasound beamforming front ends, low-cost digital oscilloscopes, and intermediate-frequency (IF) sampling in software-defined radio (SDR). The wide input bandwidth also suits high-speed data-acquisition cards and CCD/CIS imaging front ends. When integrating this ADC, provide well-decoupled analog and digital supplies and route LVDS data pairs with controlled 100 ohm differential impedance to preserve signal integrity.

Applications typiques
IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 convient pour 6 applications: Basestation Receive Path, Medical Ultrasound Beamforming, Digital Oscilloscope Front End, Software-Defined Radio IF Sampling, CCD/CIS Imaging Front End, Automated Test Equipment (ATE) Digitizer.
Basestation Receive Path
The IDTADC1210S125HN-C18's 125 MSPS sampling and 12-bit resolution make it well-suited for digitizing the IF stage in 3G/4G LTE and small-cell basestation receivers. Its 3 V analog supply and LVDS DDR output mode deliver a low-jitter data stream directly to an FPGA for downstream channelization, while the 40-VFQFPN footprint and exposed thermal pad simplify 4-layer baseband layouts. Compared with a SAR ADC, the pipelined architecture sustains continuous 125 MSPS throughput without sample-rate gaps, which is critical for cellular receiver chains. Place a bandpass anti-alias filter ahead of the analog input to suppress out-of-band blockers above Nyquist.
Recommandé
Medical Ultrasound Beamforming
The IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 fits the front end of medical ultrasound receivers where 40-80 MSPS per channel is typical and 12-bit dynamic range is sufficient for B-mode imaging. Pipelined ADCs sustain the continuous sampling rate demanded by phased-array beamformers, and the LVDS DDR outputs minimize pin count when fanning into an FPGA-based beamformer. The 3 V analog supply simplifies transducer preamp interface, and the 1.8 V digital supply pairs naturally with modern 28 nm FPGAs. The exposed thermal pad supports dense multi-channel board layouts without compromising thermal performance.
Recommandé
Digital Oscilloscope Front End
The IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 provides 12-bit vertical resolution at 125 MSPS, an ideal match for low-cost 100 MHz-class digital storage oscilloscopes and modular DAQ cards. Its pipelined architecture delivers glitch-free real-time sampling across the full 125 MHz bandwidth, outperforming equivalent SAR ADCs that lose samples between conversions. The CMOS output mode simplifies hookup to mid-range FPGAs, and the 40-VFQFPN package fits a 4-channel front-end card alongside the analog input attenuator and trigger circuitry. Select LVDS DDR mode for 200+ MHz scopes where higher data-rate offload is required.
Recommandé
Software-Defined Radio IF Sampling
The IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 is well-matched to SDR receivers that digitize a 70 MHz or 140 MHz IF after a single downconversion stage. With 125 MSPS sampling and 12-bit resolution, it preserves enough dynamic range for narrowband demodulation while the LVDS DDR outputs drive an FPGA-based DDC (digital downconverter) directly. The 3 V analog supply supports the high input bandwidth needed for IF sampling, and the 1.8 V digital supply pairs with low-power 28 nm FPGAs. SDR designs benefit from this ADC's wide input bandwidth and selectable output mode, which lets the same board target multiple bands.
Recommandé
CCD/CIS Imaging Front End
The IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 suits industrial line-scan and area-scan cameras that digitize CCD or CIS analog outputs at 30-60 MSPS per channel with 12-bit pixel depth. Pipelined ADCs handle the continuous pixel stream without dead-time gaps, and the selectable CMOS output integrates directly with image-pipeline FPGAs. The 40-VFQFPN package leaves board real estate for the analog front-end and timing generator, and the exposed thermal pad supports enclosed industrial housings. Use the LVDS DDR output mode for 4K or high-frame-rate cameras where data offload is the bottleneck.
Recommandé
Automated Test Equipment (ATE) Digitizer
The IDTADC1210S125HN-C18 is well-suited for production ATE pin-cards and benchtop instrumentation digitizing waveforms in the 50-100 MHz range. Its 125 MSPS sampling captures fast transients with 12-bit resolution, and the pipelined architecture sustains real-time capture without dropped samples. The 3 V analog supply accommodates standard +/-5 V or +/-10 V input attenuator networks, while LVDS DDR mode streams digitized data to a tester controller FPGA. The 40-VFQFPN footprint fits high-density pin-cards where multiple ADCs share a common reference plane.

Notes de conception
Decouple the 3 V VDDA rail with a 10 µF tantalum bulk capacitor plus 100 nF and 10 nF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of each VDDA pin. Decouple the 1.8 V VDDO rail similarly. Use ferrite beads to isolate the analog and digital supplies; the LVDS DDR output current switching on VDDO can otherwise couple noise into the analog front-end via the substrate and degrade SNR by 3-5 dB.
Solder the exposed thermal pad (pin 40 EP) to a continuous ground copper pour spanning at least 1 square inch of board area. With theta_JA around 30 °C/W on a 4-layer FR4 board and worst-case dissipation of 0.6 W at 125 MSPS, junction temperature rise is approximately 18 °C above ambient, keeping Tj below the 125 °C max with adequate margin. For enclosed industrial housings, add thermal vias under the pad to a dedicated inner-plane heat spreader.
Route the LVDS DDR output pairs (D[11:0] and DCLK) as 100 Ω differential traces with matched length within 150 mils of the corresponding DCLK pair to preserve timing margin. Keep analog input traces short and symmetric - route AINP and AINN as a differential pair with 100 Ω differential impedance, and place the anti-alias RC network within 10 mm of the analog input pins. Separate analog and digital grounds, joining them only at the EPAD.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum VDDA of 3.9 V or VDDO of 3.9 V. Drive the differential clock input (CLK+/CLK-) with an LVPECL or LVDS source meeting the datasheet's common-mode range; a single-ended CMOS clock will degrade SNR by 5-8 dB. The MODE pin must be tied to VDDO for LVDS DDR or to DGND for CMOS output; leaving it floating produces undefined output behavior. The RESET pin should be asserted for at least one clock cycle after power-up.
