INA790A-Q1 Présentation
What is a current-sense amplifier? A current-sense amplifier is an analog IC that measures the voltage across a shunt resistor placed in series with a load and amplifies the small differential voltage into a ground-referenced output proportional to load current. Current-sense amplifiers sit within the signal-chain hierarchy as follows: current-sense amplifier -> instrumentation amplifier -> analog amplifier -> power management analog IC. INA790A-Q1 belongs to the integrated-shunt subfamily, where the shunt resistor and the gain stage are co-packaged, eliminating PCB layout-induced Kelvin errors and parasitic resistance drift that plague discrete solutions.
Key features include a -4V to +110V wide common-mode range that survives load-dump and cold-crank transients in 48V automotive rails, 75ARMS continuous current handling, enhanced PWM rejection that suppresses large dv/dt common-mode steps from switching power stages, 1.3 MHz bandwidth for fast transient response, and a low 35 ppm/degrees C maximum temperature drift enabled by the chopper-stabilized architecture. The integrated 400 micro-ohm shunt eliminates external resistor stocking, drift concerns, and board-space overhead.
The INA790A-Q1 uses a zero-drift chopper architecture that modulates the input offset voltage to a higher frequency, samples the modulation envelope, and feeds back to cancel the original offset. This technique virtually eliminates the 1/f noise corner and the offset drift that limit conventional current-sense amplifiers in high-precision DC and slow-varying measurements.
Typical applications include 48V automotive BLDC motor phase current sensing, server and telecom hot-swap controller current monitors, industrial solenoid and actuator current feedback, solar inverter string current measurement, and battery management system (BMS) pack-current sensing. The AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification and PWM rejection make it specifically tailored to inverter and motor-drive environments.
When designing with this device, place the INA790A-Q1 in the Kelvin path as close to the load current shunt as possible. Because the shunt is internal, the only PCB layout concern is keeping high-current traces off the analog ground return. Use the REF pin to level-shift the output for bidirectional sensing into an ADC with a ground-referenced input.

Applications typiques
INA790A-Q1 convient pour 7 applications: 48V Automotive BLDC Motor Phase Current Sensing, Server / Telecom 48V Hot-Swap Current Monitor, Industrial Solenoid and Actuator Current Feedback, Solar Inverter String Current Measurement, Battery Management System (BMS) Pack-Current Sensing, Drone ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) Current Monitor, Electric Vehicle DC-Link Current Sensing.
48V Automotive BLDC Motor Phase Current Sensing
The INA790A-Q1 is ideally suited to 48V BLDC motor phase current sensing where its 110V common-mode range survives the inverter's switching transients that swing between -12V and +110V, and the integrated 400 micro-ohm shunt eliminates PCB Kelvin layout errors that degrade discrete current-shunt solutions. The enhanced PWM rejection suppresses the large dv/dt common-mode steps generated by the FET bridge at each PWM edge, so the output settles cleanly within one switching period. AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification covers the -40 degrees C to +125 degrees C automotive underhood operating range. Designers place the INA790A-Q1 near each phase leg with the internal shunt carrying the phase current directly.
Recommandé
Server / Telecom 48V Hot-Swap Current Monitor
In server and telecom -48V (or +48V) hot-swap controllers the INA790A-Q1 provides continuous current telemetry directly into the BMC ADC, replacing discrete op-amp plus external shunt designs. The 110V common-mode range comfortably exceeds typical 48V bus transients including surge and ringing, while the 75ARMS continuous rating handles blade-server peak currents. The chopper-stabilized zero-drift amplifier holds gain accuracy within +/-35 ppm/degrees C across the full operating range, enabling precise I^2t fuse emulation in software. Reference the REF pin to 2.5V to bipolar-center the output across the ADC's input range.
Recommandé
Industrial Solenoid and Actuator Current Feedback
Industrial solenoid drivers and proportional valves demand accurate current feedback to maintain closed-loop force or position control. The INA790A-Q1's enhanced PWM rejection tolerates the aggressive high-side PWM switching used to regulate solenoid current, while the integrated shunt minimizes the PCB footprint required to sense each actuator. Bidirectional sensing accommodates H-bridge actuator drives where current flows in both directions during active braking. AEC-Q100 qualification is a bonus for industrial customers who leverage automotive-grade parts to extend Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) in harsh factory environments.
Recommandé
Solar Inverter String Current Measurement
Solar string inverters require per-string current sensing for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and fault detection. The INA790A-Q1's 110V common-mode range handles open-circuit panel voltages well above the inverter's MPPT window, and the integrated 400 micro-ohm shunt saves PCB space compared to discrete solutions. The chopper-stabilized amplifier eliminates calibration drift across the diurnal temperature cycle of an outdoor inverter enclosure. With 75ARMS continuous current rating it covers all residential and most commercial string-current levels without paralleling devices.
Recommandé
Battery Management System (BMS) Pack-Current Sensing
In Battery Management Systems the INA790A-Q1 provides high-side pack current sensing with bidirectional measurement for charge and discharge coulomb counting. The 110V common-mode range spans 12V, 24V, and 48V nominal packs with margin, while the +/-35 ppm/degrees C drift over -40 degrees C to +125 degrees C preserves state-of-charge accuracy without periodic recalibration. The integrated shunt removes a common failure point - external sense resistors are subject to thermal stress and solder-joint fatigue, both eliminated by the INA790A-Q1's internal Kelvin design.
Recommandé
Drone ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) Current Monitor
In brushless drone Electronic Speed Controllers the INA790A-Q1 provides per-motor current feedback to the flight controller for torque estimation and motor-health monitoring. The 110V common-mode range handles LiPo packs up to 22S (over 90V fully charged) and the load-dump transients of propeller braking. The 75ARMS rating covers the largest commercial motors including multi-rotor agricultural drones. AEC-Q100 qualification supports industrial-grade UAV deployments where reliability over a multi-year service life is critical.
Recommandé
Electric Vehicle DC-Link Current Sensing
Electric vehicle traction inverters and DC-DC converters require robust current sensing on the 400V or 800V DC-link for control loops and diagnostics. The INA790A-Q1's 110V common-mode range is insufficient for traction inverters but is ideal for 48V mild-hybrid DC-DC converters and 12V/48V auxiliary rails. Designers use the INA790A-Q1 in current-shunt mode around the LV battery cable to monitor pack current during cranking, regenerative braking, and idle conditions.

Notes de conception
Because the INA790A-Q1 integrates the 400 micro-ohm Kelvin-connected shunt, the only PCB layout concern is routing the high-current load current through the package's exposed IN+/IN- pins without injecting additional resistance from copper trace. Estimated: trace length 5mm at 1 oz copper adds ~1.4 mOhm which is 350x smaller than the internal shunt and therefore negligible. Solder the exposed thermal pad to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch to keep junction temperature under the 125 degrees C limit when carrying the full 75ARMS continuous load.
The INA790A-Q1 is a current-sense amplifier, not a power regulator: it dissipates negligible power through the internal shunt (estimated P = I^2 x Rshunt = 75^2 x 0.0004 = 2.25W worst case at 75ARMS). Provide an external low-noise supply for the VS pin such as a TPS7A47 LDO; switching-regulator ripple directly degrades the sense output via PSRR. Decouple VS with a 1 uF X7R ceramic placed within 2 mm of the VS pin.
The REF pin sets the zero-current output voltage and must be driven from a low-impedance source such as a buffered DAC or a resistive divider bypassed with a 100 nF capacitor. Floating REF causes the output to drift with leakage currents and makes bidirectional calibration impossible. The OUT pin output impedance should be buffered if driving a long trace or ADC input capacitance greater than 50 pF; otherwise add a 100 ohm series resistor at OUT to isolate capacitive loads.
