ISO6442 Présentation
A digital isolator is a component that transfers digital signals across a galvanic isolation barrier, blocking high voltages, isolating ground potentials, and preventing noise currents between two sides of a circuit. Within the interface-IC hierarchy, digital isolators sit between logic controllers and high-voltage or noisy domains such as motor drives, inverters, and fieldbus networks. The ISO6442 belongs to TI's ISO644x family of basic and reinforced quad-channel isolators built on a proprietary capacitive isolation architecture using an SiO2 dielectric barrier.
Key features include the wide 2.25 V to 5.5 V supply range on both sides, enabling direct interfacing with 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V, and 5 V logic; a fail-safe default output of high for the standard ISO6442 during input power or signal loss (the ISO6442F defaults low); and robust EMC performance for harsh industrial noise environments. The reinforced DWR package supports sustained working-voltage isolation requirements.
Architecturally, the device modulates the input signal across the capacitive barrier and reconstructs it at the output, delivering low power, high speed, and stable propagation characteristics over temperature and supply variation. Enable pins provide tri-state output control for power management and multipoint bus applications.
Typical applications include isolated SPI interfaces, industrial fieldbus communication, motor drives, power inverters, battery management systems, and on-board chargers, where 150 Mbps throughput and 250 kV/us CMTI maintain signal integrity in electrically noisy conditions.
When designing, maintain adequate creepage and clearance on the PCB, place 0.1 uF bypass capacitors close to both VCC pins, and verify that propagation delay and pulse-width distortion near 150 Mbps meet the timing requirements of the receiving peripheral.

Applications typiques
ISO6442 convient pour 6 applications: Isolated SPI Interfaces, Industrial Fieldbus Communication, Motor Drives and Inverters, Battery Management Systems, On-Board Chargers (OBC), Test and Measurement Instrumentation.
Isolated SPI Interfaces
The ISO6442 fits isolated SPI because its 2/2 channel split maps directly onto full-duplex SPI (SCK and MOSI forward, MISO and CS reverse) at 150 Mbps, well above typical SPI clock rates. Placed between the MCU and a remote ADC or flash device, the capacitive SiO2 barrier adds no switching noise and tolerates large ground-potential differences with 250 kV/us CMTI. Designers should budget total propagation delay plus pulse-width distortion against SPI setup/hold margins at maximum clock speed.
Recommandé
Industrial Fieldbus Communication
In RS-485 and fieldbus nodes, the ISO6442 isolates the controller from the noisy bus transceiver domain, with 2.25 V to 5.5 V supplies on each side enabling direct 3.3 V logic coupling. Its robust EMC performance and 250 kV/us CMTI keep signals intact amid motor switching and ground surges typical of factory environments. Default-high fail-safe outputs prevent bus glitches during power-up sequencing. Pair with an isolated RS-485 transceiver or discrete transceiver on the line side.
Recommandé
Motor Drives and Inverters
Motor-drive controllers switch high dv/dt stages that generate common-mode transients exceeding 100 V/ns; the ISO6442's 250 kV/us (250 V/ns) CMTI withstands these events while passing PWM gating and feedback signals across the barrier. Its two reverse channels carry fault and speed-feedback signals back to the controller. The reinforced 5000 Vrms DWR option supports the safety isolation needed between the low-voltage control domain and the high-voltage DC bus in industrial inverters.
Recommandé
Battery Management Systems
In BMS architectures, the ISO6442 isolates the low-voltage pack controller from the high-voltage battery stack domain while forwarding cell-monitoring communication at high speed. According to the ISO644x datasheet, the device's stable propagation delay over temperature ensures consistent timing across the AFE communication link. The 5000 Vrms reinforced DWR package supports isolation coordination for EV traction batteries. Combine with a stackable battery-monitoring AFE and an isolated auxiliary power supply for a complete barrier solution.
Recommandé
On-Board Chargers (OBC)
On-board chargers require reinforced isolation between the AC-mains-referenced power stage and the vehicle control domain. The ISO6442DWR's 5000 Vrms reinforced rating and 250 kV/us CMTI make it suited to relaying PWM control, telemetry, and fault signals across this barrier despite aggressive switching transients. Automotive designs should specify the ISO6442-Q1 variant for AEC-Q100 qualification. Verify creepage and clearance on the PCB to preserve the package's reinforced isolation rating in end-product safety compliance.
Recommandé
Test and Measurement Instrumentation
Bench instruments and data-acquisition systems use the ISO6442 to float measurement front ends relative to a grounded digital backplane, eliminating ground loops that corrupt low-level signals. The 150 Mbps rate supports high-throughput sample streaming from isolated ADCs, while tri-state enable pins allow multiplexed shared-bus designs. The wide 2.25 V to 5.5 V supply range simplifies interfacing with mixed-logic acquisition boards. Low, stable propagation delay preserves timing alignment across the isolation boundary.

Notes de conception
Place a 0.1 uF ceramic bypass capacitor within 2 mm of each VCC pin (VCC1 and VCC2), referenced to their local grounds. Preserve creepage and clearance across the isolation barrier on the PCB: do not route any traces or copper planes in the barrier gap beneath the package, and match the board's barrier spacing to the reinforced (DWR) or basic (DBQ) isolation rating required by the end-product safety standard.
At data rates approaching 150 Mbps, total timing margin equals maximum propagation delay plus pulse-width distortion; verify this budget against the receiving peripheral's setup and hold requirements across the full temperature and supply range. Keep the isolated traces short and use ground planes on each side of the barrier to maintain a controlled impedance environment for high-speed channels.
Select the correct fail-safe polarity before layout: standard ISO6442 defaults outputs HIGH during input power or signal loss, while ISO6442F defaults LOW - swapping after tape-out requires a BOM change only if the same package is used. Also confirm both sides' supplies are within 2.25 V to 5.5 V at power-up; undefined output states can occur when a side is unpowered while the other is active.
