LM3409HVMY/NOPB Présentation
An LED driver controller is a power management IC that regulates current through an LED string rather than voltage. Buck (step-down) controllers use an external switching MOSFET and inductor to deliver current at a lower average voltage than the input, achieving high efficiency (typically >90%) versus resistive or linear current limiters. Buck controllers sit hierarchically below constant-current drivers and above DC-DC switching regulators in the power management IC taxonomy.
Key features include wide VIN from 6V to 42V (HV suffix), high-side differential current sense with low adjustable threshold voltage that eliminates the need for a ground-side sense resistor, fast output enable/disable for PWM dimming, and thermally enhanced HVSSOP package. The controller supports analog dimming via the ADIM input and PWM dimming via the EN pin, with switching frequency adjustable up to 1 MHz using a single external resistor.
The architecture uses a peak-current-mode control loop that monitors voltage across a high-side sense resistor placed in series with the LED load. Because the current sense is high-side, ground-referenced LED strings and grounded heat sinks can be used without introducing ground-loop errors. The HVSSOP-10 package includes an exposed thermal pad (PowerPAD) for low thermal resistance and high power dissipation capability.
Typical applications span high-brightness LED drivers for signage and architectural lighting, MR-Stage flash, MR-16 bulbs, automotive LED headlights and DRLs, and constant-current sources for industrial illumination. Wide input range suits both 12V and 24V bus architectures plus battery-direct-supply 36V Li-ion stacks.
When designing with this device, pay close attention to inductor and sense-resistor selection: inductor value sets converter ripple current, while sense resistor value sets average LED current. Use the exposed pad for PCB thermal relief to handle continuous high-current operation.

Applications typiques
LM3409HVMY/NOPB convient pour 6 applications: High-Brightness LED Signage, Automotive LED Headlights and DRLs, Architectural and Stage Lighting, MR-Stage LED Bulb Retrofits, Industrial Constant-Current LED Drivers, Portable LED Flashlights and Worklights.
High-Brightness LED Signage
The LM3409HVMY/NOPB drives constant current through high-brightness LED strings in outdoor signage, channel letters, and architectural accent lighting. Its 6V to 42V input range accepts both 12V and 24V bus supplies plus battery-direct stacks, while the wide VIN tolerance handles load-dump and cold-crank transients common in mobile signage. High-side differential current sense with low adjustable threshold enables ground-referenced LED strings and grounded heat sinks, simplifying thermal design for high-power LED clusters. PWM dimming via the EN pin supports brightness modulation for nighttime dimming or dynamic signage effects, and the 10-pin HVSSOP PowerPAD provides the thermal headroom for continuous high-current operation typical of outdoor LED installations.

Automotive LED Headlights and DRLs
The LM3409HVMY/NOPB forms the constant-current core of automotive LED headlamp, DRL, and fog-light modules. Its HV-suffix 42V input rating tolerates load-dump transients on 12V automotive buses, and high-side current sensing allows the LED module heat sink to be chassis-grounded for improved thermal dissipation. Analog dimming on ADIM and fast PWM dimming on EN support adaptive headlight functions such as cornering lights and high-beam assist. For production automotive designs the AEC-Q100 -Q1 grade (LM3409HV-Q1) should be selected; the non-automotive LM3409HVMY/NOPB is appropriate for non-safety automotive interior and accent lighting where -Q1 is optional.

Architectural and Stage Lighting
Architectural lighting fixtures and stage spotlights benefit from the LM3409HVMY/NOPB wide input voltage range and high-side current sensing. The 6V to 42V input supports 24V professional lighting bus architectures, while high-side differential sense allows the fixture chassis to be grounded without ground-loop-induced LED current errors. PWM dimming on the EN pin delivers smooth, deep dimming down to a few percent without color shift, critical for theatrical and architectural dimming curves. The 10-pin HVSSOP PowerPAD package maintains low junction temperature even in enclosed fixtures with limited airflow, supporting continuous full-brightness operation typical of museum and gallery lighting.

MR-Stage LED Bulb Retrofits
MR-Stage LED retrofit bulbs replacing halogen MR-Stage fixtures need high-efficiency constant-current drivers in thermally constrained form factors. The LM3409HVMY/NOPB fits this role with its small 10-pin HVSSOP PowerPAD footprint, which combines low thermal resistance with the small PCB area required inside MR-Stage bulb housings. The wide 6V to 42V input supports both 12V AC-to-DC adapter supplies and 24V commercial LED bus rails, while analog and PWM dimming compatibility preserves the smooth dimming curves of MR-Stage dimmers. High-side current sense avoids ground loops that can introduce flicker in retrofit installations.

Industrial Constant-Current LED Drivers
Industrial machine-vision and inspection lighting require stable constant-current drivers that reject supply noise and deliver uniform LED brightness across long operating cycles. The LM3409HVMY/NOPB peak-current-mode control with high-side current sensing provides tight regulation of LED current regardless of supply variations on the 24V industrial bus. The 6V to 42V input range accepts direct connection to 24V industrial supplies with generous transient margin, while the HVSSOP PowerPAD package sustains continuous high-current operation in factory-floor fixtures. PWM dimming enables strobe synchronization with camera exposures for machine-vision inspection lines.
Recommandé
Portable LED Flashlights and Worklights
Portable Li-ion powered worklights using 1S to 3S Li-ion battery packs (nominally 3.7V to 11.1V, up to 12.6V fully charged) benefit from the LM3409HVMY/NOPB 6V to 42V input range when paired with a boost front-end. The high-side current sense allows the battery-pack negative terminal to be referenced to the chassis, simplifying mechanical design. PWM dimming via EN supports brightness modes (high, medium, low, strobe) common in worklight and flashlight designs, while the small HVSSOP footprint fits the tight PCBs of handheld products. The thermally enhanced PowerPAD enables continuous high-current output without external heatsinking.

Notes de conception
Estimated: At VIN=24V, VLED=12V, ILED=1A, the external PFET and diode dissipate approximately 12W. Size the external PFET for VDSS greater than the maximum VIN plus margin and RDSON low enough to keep conduction loss under 1W. The HVSSOP controller itself dissipates only gate-drive loss plus a few mA quiescent; verify junction temperature using the HVSSOP PowerPAD theta_JA from the datasheet.
The 10-pin HVSSOP package uses an exposed thermal pad (PowerPAD) that MUST be soldered to a PCB copper area for proper heat sinking. Allocate a thermal pad copper pour of at least 100 mm^2 on top and bottom layers stitched with thermal vias, per TI PowerPAD application notes. Without the exposed-pad solder connection, thermal resistance increases dramatically and the device can overheat at high duty cycles.
Place the high-side current-sense resistor RSNS as close as possible to the LED load return and route the CS pin traces as a true Kelvin connection to avoid switching noise corrupting the current measurement. Keep the switching node (PFET drain, inductor, diode) traces short and away from the CS and ADIM analog traces. Use a ground plane on the bottom layer to minimize EMI and provide thermal relief for the PowerPAD.
Do not omit the bootstrap capacitor on the HO pin if the topology requires it (refer to the datasheet application circuit). Select the RT resistor to set switching frequency - too low a frequency increases inductor ripple and acoustic noise; too high increases switching losses. Verify the chosen inductor saturation rating handles peak current (ILED plus half of ripple current) plus margin.
