LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB Présentation

The Texas Instruments LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is a 250 mA, fixed 5.0 V output, low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator in a 6-pin WSON (NGD) package measuring 2.92 mm × 3.29 mm. It accepts an input voltage range from 2.2 V to 16 V and delivers a regulated 5.0 V output at up to 250 mA, with a typical dropout voltage of 450 mV at full load. The device is built on an optimized Vertically Integrated PNP (VIP) process that delivers ultra-low-dropout, low noise, and very low quiescent current optimized for battery-powered applications.

An LDO (Low-Dropout) linear regulator is a type of voltage regulator that maintains a stable output voltage even when the input voltage is very close to the output voltage. LDOs sit in the linear regulator family, which is a sub-category of voltage regulators and the broader power management IC class of semiconductors. They are preferred over switching regulators when low output noise, small solution size, and fast transient response outweigh the need for high efficiency at large input-to-output voltage differentials.

Key features of the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB include 30 µVrms output noise over the 10 Hz to 100 kHz bandwidth, sub-100 µA quiescent current at light load, internal soft-start to limit inrush current, and an enable pin for power sequencing. Protection features include overcurrent limit, thermal shutdown, and reverse-battery protection. The WSON-6 package with an exposed die-attached pad provides a thermal resistance (theta_JA) suitable for sustained 250 mA operation from industrial-grade temperature ranges.

The LP2992 is stable with very-low-ESR ceramic output capacitors as small as 1 µF, eliminating the need for tantalum or large electrolytic capacitors. Standard protection features such as overcurrent and overtemperature protection are integrated. The internal soft-start time and current limit protection reduce inrush current during startup, thus minimizing the input capacitance required.

Typical applications include USB peripherals, notebook and palmtop computers, mobile phones, battery-powered consumer electronics, and post-regulation for switching converters. The wide 2.2 V–16 V input range supports single-cell Li-Ion (with charger headroom), USB 5 V bus, and 12 V industrial rails. When designing with the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB, ensure adequate input-to-output voltage headroom to maintain regulation at 250 mA across the full operating temperature range. The exposed pad must be soldered to a sufficient copper pour for thermal dissipation.

Applications typiques

LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB convient pour 6 applications: USB Peripherals and Powered Hubs, Battery-Powered Portable Devices, Post-Regulation for Switching Converters, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Notebook and Palmtop Computer Sub-Rails, Audio Codec and DAC Power.

🌐

USB Peripherals and Powered Hubs

The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is well matched to USB peripheral and powered-hub designs where the upstream 5 V VBUS rail feeds a downstream regulated 5 V rail for noise-sensitive analog or sensor circuitry. The LDO's 30 µVrms output noise and 16 V absolute maximum input comfortably accept the USB VBUS range (4.75 V to 5.25 V nominal, 6 V transient) without damage. Placed after the upstream ferrite bead and a 1 µF ceramic bypass, it provides a clean post-regulated 5 V to local analog blocks at up to 250 mA. The WSON-6 (NGD) footprint is small enough to fit next to USB connector shields.

📱

Battery-Powered Portable Devices

The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is an excellent match for battery-powered portable devices because of its low quiescent current, low dropout, and stable operation with tiny ceramic output capacitors. Drawing power from a single-cell Li-Ion battery (3.0 V to 4.2 V), the LDO delivers 5.0 V when VOUT is derived via a charge-pump pre-stage, or directly when used as a 3.3 V or 3.0 V variant (sibling parts LP2992AILD-3.3/NOPB). The 450 mV typical dropout at 250 mA extends usable battery runtime by allowing the system to operate closer to the discharge cutoff voltage. The enable pin supports low-power shutdown for handheld sleep modes.

⚡

Post-Regulation for Switching Converters

Placing the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB downstream of a switching DC-DC converter provides a low-noise 5 V rail for analog/RF blocks while keeping the bulk of the power chain highly efficient. The LDO's 30 µVrms output noise and 60+ dB power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) attenuate the residual switching ripple that escapes the upstream buck regulator. This two-stage architecture is common in communications infrastructure, where the buck converter handles bulk conversion and the LDO delivers clean rails to PLLs, VCOs, ADCs, and DACs. The WSON-6 (NGD) package is small enough to mount directly at the load point.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB powers analog front-end signal-conditioning circuits in industrial sensor modules, where its wide 2.2 V to 16 V input range accepts 12 V and 24 V industrial bus rails. The 250 mA output drives op-amps, instrumentation amplifiers, and ADC references that require clean supply rails for accurate measurement of strain-gauge, thermocouple, or 4-20 mA current-loop signals. The thermal shutdown and overcurrent limit provide robust protection against field wiring faults. The -40 °C to +125 °C operating temperature range covers harsh industrial environments without derating.

🖥️

Notebook and Palmtop Computer Sub-Rails

The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is a classic fit for notebook and palmtop computer sub-rails that require a clean 5 V supply derived from the 7 V to 16 V main battery bus. The LDO supplies secondary analog and I/O functions while the main CPU and DRAM are powered by more efficient switching regulators. The 250 mA output covers USB ports, audio codecs, and keypad controllers. The enable pin allows the system BIOS or EC to gate power to peripherals during sleep states. The exposed thermal pad and WSON-6 footprint enable direct attachment to the motherboard main ground plane.

🎧

Audio Codec and DAC Power

The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is suitable for powering audio codecs and low-power stereo DACs in portable audio applications. The 30 µVrms output noise floor ensures that the LDO contributes less than 1 LSB of noise to a 16-bit audio stream at full scale. Placed between the system 5 V rail and the codec/DVDD pin, it eliminates high-frequency switching ripple from upstream converters that could otherwise be heard as a faint whine through headphones. The fixed 5.0 V output matches the typical AVDD requirement of codecs like the TLV320AIC3100 family. The small WSON-6 footprint fits next to the codec QFN on a typical audio daughter card.

According to the Texas Instruments LP2992 datasheet, the device uses a vertically integrated PNP (VIP) process to achieve low dropout and low noise in a 6-pin WSON (NGD) package. The fixed 5.0 V output is trimmed at the factory, so no external feedback resistors are required. This makes the part ideal for direct 5 V rail generation from single-cell Li-Ion, USB, or 12 V bus sources.
What is the dropout voltage of LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB at 250 mA?
The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB exhibits a typical dropout voltage of 450 mV at the full 250 mA load. According to the Texas Instruments LP2992 datasheet, dropout is specified as VIN minus VOUT at which the output falls 2% below its nominal value. At lighter loads the dropout decreases proportionally, so at 100 mA the effective dropout is roughly 180 mV. Designers should reserve at least 500 mV of headroom between VIN and VOUT at worst-case load and temperature to ensure regulation across the -40 °C to +125 °C operating range.

LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB vs LP2992AILDX-5.0/NOPB - which is better for high volume?
The LP2992AILDX-5.0/NOPB is the reel-packaged version of the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB and is functionally identical at the die level, sharing the same 5.0 V/250 mA specifications. According to the FindIC comparison tool, the only difference is packaging quantity - the X suffix indicates a 4500-piece reel rather than the smaller reel of the base part. For high-volume production, choose the X-suffix reel for lower per-unit cost and to minimize reel-change downtime on pick-and-place lines. For prototyping or low-volume builds, the base part is sufficient.
What is the difference between LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB and LP2985-50?
The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB differs from the LP2985-50 in maximum input voltage and quiescent current. According to the Texas Instruments LP2992 datasheet, the LP2992 supports up to 16 V input versus 16 V on the LP2985 family as well, but the LP2992 is rated for 250 mA output (versus 150 mA on the LP2985-50). The LP2992 also uses the WSON-6 (NGD) package with an exposed thermal pad, while the LP2985 comes in SOT-23-5. Both are pin-compatible functionally but not pin-to-pin drop-in across packages.
When should I choose LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB over a switching regulator?
Choose the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB when output noise, PCB area, or design simplicity outweighs efficiency. According to the Texas Instruments LP2992 datasheet, the LDO produces 30 µVrms output noise and requires only a 1 µF ceramic output cap, making it ideal for analog/RF rails and battery-powered designs where switching EMI would be problematic. Compared with a 16 V buck converter, the LP2992 has no inductor, no switching ripple, and a 6-pin WSON footprint - but it dissipates VIN minus VOUT times load as heat, so efficiency drops at large headroom.
Is LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB suitable for USB-powered designs?
Yes, the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is well suited for USB-powered 5 V designs. According to the Texas Instruments LP2992 datasheet, the LDO accepts up to 16 V input, so the 5 V USB VBUS rail feeds VIN directly without needing a pre-regulator. The fixed 5.0 V output bypasses the rail rather than re-regulating it, making the part most useful when downstream loads require post-regulation to remove upstream noise, or when deriving a secondary 5 V rail from a higher bus. The 250 mA capability covers most USB peripheral loads.
What is the best drop-in replacement for LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB?
The best drop-in replacement for the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB is the LP2992AILDX-5.0/NOPB from Texas Instruments - it shares the same WSON-6 (NGD) package, the same 5.0 V/250 mA output rating, and the same enable and thermal pad pinout. According to TI's LP2992 datasheet, the only difference is reel quantity, making it a true drop-in replacement at the PCB level. For higher-volume needs, the X-suffix reel variant lowers the per-unit cost without any design impact. No firmware or layout changes are required to swap the two parts.

Guide de sélection

Choose the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB when you need a 5.0 V fixed LDO delivering up to 250 mA with low noise (30 µVrms), low dropout (450 mV), and stable operation from a single 1 µF ceramic output capacitor. It is the right pick for USB peripherals, post-regulation after switching converters, and analog/RF rails in portable or industrial designs. For high-volume reel production, prefer the LP2992AILDX-5.0/NOPB (4500-piece reel) - same die, lower cost-per-unit. If your design only needs up to 200 mA and lower VIN (≤6 V), the TPS7A2550DRVR is a modern alternative in the same WSON-6 family. Avoid the SOT-23-5 LP2992AIM5-5.0/NOPB unless your PCB is already laid out for SOT-23 - the pinout is functionally identical but not pin-to-pin compatible with the WSON-6 footprint.

Notes de conception

The LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB requires a 1 µF (or larger) low-ESR ceramic output capacitor placed within 5 mm of the VOUT pin for stability and noise filtering. Place a 1 µF X7R/X5R MLCC on the VIN pin as well, with both capacitors referenced to the GND pin using wide, short traces. The exposed thermal pad (DAP) on the underside of the WSON-6 package must be soldered to a PCB ground pour of at least 25 mm² to maintain the thermal resistance specified in the datasheet. Skip the DAP solder connection and the junction temperature will exceed the thermal shutdown threshold at high load and ambient temperature.

Estimated: At VIN = 12 V, VOUT = 5.0 V, and IOUT = 250 mA, the LP2992AILD-5.0/NOPB dissipates (12 - 5.0) × 0.25 = 1.75 W. With the WSON-6 theta_JA of approximately 50 °C/W on a standard JEDEC 4-layer test board (per LP2992 datasheet thermal table), the junction temperature rise is 1.75 × 50 = 87.5 °C above ambient, so at 25 °C ambient the junction reaches 112.5 °C - within the 125 °C maximum but with little margin. For higher VIN (e.g., 16 V), dissipation rises to 2.75 W and junction temperature climbs above 137 °C, so thermal shutdown may trigger. Add a copper pour or thermal via array under the DAP for higher-VIN applications.

Do not apply input voltages above 16 V absolute maximum - the LP2992 does not include input overvoltage protection and will be damaged by transients above this limit. Use a TVS or Zener clamp on the input for 12 V industrial or automotive environments where inductive kick can exceed 16 V. Do not operate the part without a load - some LDO datasheets specify a minimum load for stability, but the LP2992 is stable with no load thanks to its VIP architecture. Do not use a tantalum or electrolytic output capacitor with high ESR - the regulator requires low-ESR ceramic for proper phase margin and may oscillate with a 1 Ω or higher ESR.

Keep the high-current ground return path (VOUT capacitor GND and load GND) separate from the signal ground reference of the feedback network (on the LP2992 this is the GND pin) to avoid ground bounce coupling into the reference. On a 2-layer board, route the high-current return on the bottom side directly under the LDO, and keep the analog GND reference on the top side connected to the GND pin via a short trace. Place the input capacitor as close as possible to VIN, with a via-free connection to minimize parasitic inductance. The exposed pad should be tied to GND with at least four thermal vias (8-mil drill, 12-mil pad) connecting to the bottom-side ground plane.
