LTC2201IUK Présentation
An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a data-converter integrated circuit that samples continuous analog signals and outputs discrete digital codes; pipelined ADCs such as the LTC2201IUK are the dominant architecture for 10-250 Msps converters in communications, test and measurement, and radar/imaging front ends. Within the broader converter hierarchy, this part belongs to the high-speed, high-resolution (>= 16-bit, >= 10 Msps) sub-category that sits between precision SAR converters and ultra-fast flash converters. Its 16-bit resolution places it in the precision-instrumentation tier where DC accuracy, low noise, and wide spurious-free dynamic range are critical.
Key features include 81.6 dB SNR and 100 dB SFDR at 5 MHz input, 250 MHz full-power input bandwidth, 2.25 Vp-p or 1.5 Vp-p selectable input range, internal dither for SFDR improvement, and a low-jitter clock-to-data output interface. The pipelined architecture enables high throughput while maintaining low power consumption; a separate output supply supports LVDS or CMOS digital interfaces. Industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C) is supported in this IUK variant.
Typical applications include cellular base-station receivers, radar and electronic-warfare systems, digital oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and medical imaging front ends. The wide 250 MHz analog input bandwidth and 20 Msps throughput make the LTC2201IUK well suited to IF-sampling architectures where the ADC samples a down-converted IF directly without an additional mixer stage. The high SFDR of 100 dB is critical for spectral purity in cellular and radar receivers.
When designing with this part, drive the analog input with a low-noise, low-distortion differential amplifier (such as the AD8352 or ADL5562) and place the anti-alias filter as close to the inputs as possible. Decouple the analog and digital supplies separately to prevent switching noise from coupling back into the analog front end; the exposed pad on the QFN-48 must be soldered to the ground plane for both electrical and thermal reasons.

Applications typiques
LTC2201IUK convient pour 6 applications: Cellular Base-Station Receiver, Digital Oscilloscope and Spectrum Analyzer Front End, Radar and Electronic-Warfare IF Sampling, Medical Imaging Front End (Ultrasound Beamformer), Communications Test and Measurement, Industrial Data Acquisition Systems.
Cellular Base-Station Receiver
The LTC2201IUK is well suited to cellular base-station receiver IF-sampling chains where 16-bit resolution and 100 dB SFDR are required to resolve small signals in the presence of large blockers. Its 250 MHz input bandwidth allows direct sampling of a 70-140 MHz IF without an additional mixer stage, reducing BOM cost. The 20 Msps throughput matches single-carrier UMTS and LTE channel bandwidths when matched to an appropriate digital downconverter.
Recommandé
Digital Oscilloscope and Spectrum Analyzer Front End
The LTC2201IUK's 16-bit resolution and 100 dB SFDR make it a strong candidate for mid-range digital oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer input channels digitizing signals up to 10 MHz at full Nyquist. The internal dither feature improves small-signal linearity by 10+ dB, enabling clean capture of low-amplitude harmonics and sidebands. Combined with a low-noise front-end attenuator and differential driver, the LTC2201IUK delivers dynamic range comparable to higher-cost instruments.
Recommandé
Radar and Electronic-Warfare IF Sampling
In radar and EW receivers, the LTC2201IUK's 100 dB SFDR and 250 MHz input bandwidth enable direct sampling of wideband IF signals carrying chirped or pulsed waveforms. The 20 Msps throughput is appropriate for narrow-band surveillance receivers, while pin-compatible family members (LTC2202, LTC2203) scale up the sample rate for wider instantaneous bandwidth. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature range supports outdoor and avionics deployments.
Recommandé
Medical Imaging Front End (Ultrasound Beamformer)
The LTC2201IUK is used in the receive channel of medical ultrasound beamforming systems where 16-bit dynamic range and low noise are required to resolve small echoes from tissue. The 20 Msps sample rate suits mid-frequency transducers (2-5 MHz) and the differential input simplifies the interface to time-gain-control (TGC) amplifiers. The exposed-pad QFN-48 package provides low thermal resistance for continuous-operation imaging carts.
Recommandé
Communications Test and Measurement
Production test equipment for wireless devices (WLAN, Bluetooth, cellular) uses the LTC2201IUK as a high-dynamic-range digitizer for signal analyzers and power-meter IF chains. The 100 dB SFDR enables accurate EVM measurements on QAM and OFDM waveforms with low residual distortion. Combined with an on-board FPGA for DDC, the part supports multi-standard stimulus-response test platforms in volume manufacturing.
Recommandé
Industrial Data Acquisition Systems
Industrial data-acquisition systems with simultaneous-sample requirements use the LTC2201IUK per channel to digitize wideband vibration, acoustic-emission, and partial-discharge signals. The 16-bit resolution and 100 dB SFDR allow capture of small acoustic signatures in the presence of large switching transients from adjacent power electronics. Pin-compatible family members (LTC2190/2191/2195) scale sample rate for higher-frequency vibration analysis without changing PCB layout.

- Lower sample rate = lower power for narrow-band receivers (vs AD9268XCPZ-125)
Notes de conception
Solder the exposed thermal pad of the LTC2201IUK 48-QFN package to a continuous ground plane for both electrical and thermal performance. Use a 4x4 array of thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) directly under the pad to conduct heat to inner ground layers. Per the LTC2201 datasheet, the exposed pad is the primary ground return and must NOT be left floating; failing to solder it will degrade SNR by 3-5 dB and increase junction temperature by 15-20 C.
Decouple the analog (OVDD/AVDD) and digital (DVDD) supplies separately using 10 uF bulk + 0.1 uF + 1 nF ceramic capacitor triplets placed within 5 mm of the supply pins. Per ADI reference designs, ferrite beads between the analog and digital supply rails prevent switching noise from the LVDS/CMOS outputs from coupling back into the analog front end. Power-on sequencing: drive AVDD first, then OVDD/DVDD, with monotonic ramp rates below 1 ms.
Route the LVDS/CMOS output data and clock traces as 50 ohm controlled-impedance lines with length matching within 5 mm to minimize skew. Source-terminate the clock trace with a 100 ohm resistor at the receiver when using CMOS mode. For LVDS mode, the 100 ohm receiver termination is typically integrated in the FPGA; no external termination is required. Keep digital outputs at least 10 mm away from the analog input traces to avoid coupling.
Do NOT drive the analog input single-ended unless the application can tolerate 5-8 dB worse SFDR; the LTC2201IUK is specified for differential input drive. The CLK input is sensitive to jitter - use a low-jitter clock source such as a crystal oscillator or a clean synthesizer output; clock jitter above 1 ps rms will degrade SNR at high input frequencies. The dither pin must be tied high (enabled) for the datasheet 100 dB SFDR; tying it low disables dither and may improve noise by 1-2 dB but degrades small-signal linearity.
Informations de conformité
