MAX197AENI Présentation

The Maxim Integrated MAX197AENI is a multi-range, 12-bit data-acquisition system (DAS) requiring only a single +5V supply, yet accepting analog input signals that may span both above the power-supply rail and below ground. Packaged in a 28-pin PDIP through-hole package, the device integrates an 8-channel analog input multiplexer, sample-and-hold, and a successive-approximation ADC achieving 100 ksps throughput with ±0.5 LSB integral nonlinearity in the A-grade variant. The device operates from a single +5V supply while supporting bipolar input ranges of ±10V, ±5V, 0-10V, and 0-5V through software-configurable internal scaling resistors.

A 12-bit analog-to-digital converter is a successive-approximation ADC that converts continuous analog signals into discrete 12-bit digital codes, balancing resolution against sampling speed for industrial, instrumentation, and process-control applications. As a member of the data-acquisition IC family, the MAX197 sits in the hierarchy of ADC -> data converter -> signal chain IC -> mixed-signal semiconductor. Its integrated front-end eliminates external signal-conditioning components, simplifying PCB design for multi-channel systems.

Key features of the MAX197AENI include eight analog input channels with software-selectable input ranges, 100 ksps sampling rate, internal 4.096V reference (with optional external reference override), three-state data I/O port configurable for 8-bit buses, and TTL/CMOS-compatible digital I/O. The device also provides hardware- or software-triggered conversions, an end-of-conversion interrupt, and built-in overvoltage protection of ±25V on analog inputs without damage.

Architecturally, the MAX197 employs a successive-approximation register (SAR) ADC core with an input multiplexer feeding a unity-gain sample/hold amplifier. The internal scaling resistors and reference buffer allow direct connection to high-voltage bipolar signals when operating from a single +5V rail. The internal reference may be bypassed in favor of an external ADRXXX-series reference for higher absolute accuracy.

Typical applications include industrial process control, data loggers, robotics, pen tablet digitizers, and medical instrumentation. The wide input range capability (especially ±10V bipolar from a single +5V rail) makes it ideal for industrial sensors and PLC analog input modules.

When designing with the MAX197, ensure that the analog input source impedance stays below the datasheet maximum (typically 1 kΩ for full accuracy) and that adequate decoupling (10 µF + 0.1 µF) is placed at AVDD and DVDD. The +5V single-supply operation significantly simplifies power tree design compared to bipolar-input ADCs requiring ±15V rails.

🏭

Industrial Process Control / PLC Analog Input

The MAX197AENI's 8 software-selectable input ranges (±10 V, ±5 V, 0-10 V, 0-5 V) make it ideal for industrial process control and PLC analog input modules where multiple sensor types connect to a single board. With 100 ksps throughput and 8 channels, the device can digitize thermocouple, RTD, pressure transducer, and 4-20 mA current-loop signals (after shunt conversion) from a single +5 V supply, eliminating the need for ±15 V analog rails typical in legacy PLC designs. The internal scaling resistors handle the ±10 V industrial standard directly, while the 8+4 bus interface connects to standard 8051/PIC microcontrollers for distributed I/O scanning. End-of-conversion interrupt minimizes CPU overhead.

📊

Multi-Channel Data Logger

Portable and bench-top data loggers benefit from the MAX197AENI's 8-channel multiplexer and 100 ksps aggregate throughput, enabling simultaneous capture of multiple sensor inputs without external muxes. The single +5 V supply requirement dramatically extends battery life versus bipolar-supply ADCs, while the software-configurable input ranges handle diverse sensor outputs (temperature, humidity, pressure, voltage) in a single acquisition IC. Internal 4.096 V reference and ±25 V input overvoltage protection allow direct connection to automotive 12 V battery rails and industrial field wiring without external protection, reducing BOM cost.

🤖

Robotics and Servo Control

Robotics applications require simultaneous sampling of motor current, position feedback, and environmental sensors at moderate speeds. The MAX197AENI's 100 ksps 12-bit conversion supports multi-axis servo loops sampling 4-6 axes at 10-15 kHz each, while the bipolar ±10 V input range directly digitizes current-sense amplifier outputs and resolver-derived position voltages without additional signal conditioning. The 8-bit bus interface simplifies connection to popular 8-bit microcontrollers used in motion controllers (8051, PIC, AVR), reducing firmware complexity and BOM cost.

💊

Medical Instrumentation Front End

Medical instrumentation such as patient monitors, ECG front-ends, and bench-top diagnostic equipment benefit from the MAX197AENI's wide bipolar input range and single +5 V supply. The 8-channel multiplexer allows direct connection to multiple electrode/biopotential signals (after amplification) while ±25 V input protection handles defibrillator and electrosurgical transient events. The 12-bit resolution at 100 ksps is sufficient for ECG (typically 500 Hz bandwidth) and pulse oximetry (1 kHz bandwidth) signal chains, and the internal scaling resistors eliminate the bulky front-end divider networks required by single-ended 0-5 V ADCs.

✍️

Pen Tablet and Digitizer Systems

Pen tablet and digitizer designs digitize X-Y position sensors and pen-pressure signals at high update rates for natural handwriting capture. The MAX197AENI's 100 ksps 12-bit conversion and 8 channels accommodate the 4-wire resistive tablet sensor matrix (typically 5-7 active channels) while leaving capacity for pen-pressure and proximity sensing. The software-configurable input ranges handle the wide dynamic range between active stylus position (high-amplitude signals) and hover/proximity states (low-amplitude signals), simplifying firmware-controlled gain ranging versus external PGA solutions.

🚗

Automotive Sensor Array Interface

Automotive sensor interface modules digitize multiple analog sensors (temperature, pressure, position, fluid level) and require high tolerance to load-dump transients and reverse-battery events. The MAX197AENI's ±25 V overvoltage protection on all 8 analog inputs handles automotive 12 V load-dump transients (typically 40 V for 400 ms) without damage, while the ±10 V bipolar input range directly digitizes 0-5 V sensor outputs and ±5 V throttle-position sensors from a single +5 V supply. Industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range covers automotive underhood requirements.

🔬

Test & Measurement Instrumentation

Bench-top test and measurement instruments (multimeters, signal analyzers, power-supply testers) digitize multiple voltage and current channels simultaneously for accurate measurement. The MAX197AENI's 8 input channels with ±10 V bipolar range accommodate direct connection to high-voltage signal sources after resistive attenuation, while the 12-bit resolution provides 0.025% nominal measurement accuracy suitable for general-purpose instrumentation. The internal 4.096 V reference combined with the option to use an external MAX6350 precision reference allows instruments to meet higher accuracy requirements by swapping the reference, not the ADC.

What is the resolution and sampling rate of MAX197AENI?
The MAX197AENI delivers 12-bit resolution at up to 100 ksps sampling rate. According to the Maxim datasheet, it uses a successive-approximation ADC architecture with an internal sample-and-hold, providing 8 software-selectable analog input channels per device. This combination makes it well suited to multi-channel industrial data-acquisition boards where both speed and channel density are required.
What input voltage ranges does the MAX197AENI support?
The MAX197AENI accepts ±10 V, ±5 V, 0–10 V, and 0–5 V input ranges selected via software. Critically, these bipolar ranges operate from a single +5 V supply thanks to internal input scaling resistors, eliminating the ±15 V rails traditionally required. This allows direct interface to industrial ±10 V sensor outputs and PLC analog modules from a low-voltage digital supply.
Is MAX197AENI obsolete or still in production?
Yes, the MAX197AENI is marked obsolete by Maxim Integrated and is available only from authorized aftermarket distributors. Designers of new products should target the MAX197AENI+ (RoHS version in PDIP) or migrate to MAX1300-series ADCs. Lead time on remaining stock is extended, with distributors typically quoting 12-26 weeks for factory orders.
What is the best drop-in replacement for MAX197AENI?
The MAX197BCNI+ is the closest drop-in alternative, sharing the same 28-pin PDIP footprint, identical 100 ksps throughput, and same software-configurable input ranges. The B-grade variant has ±1 LSB INL versus the A-grade's ±0.5 LSB. For new designs where ±1 LSB accuracy is acceptable, the MAX197BCNI+ provides a fully pin-compatible second source with active production status.
Where can I buy MAX197AENI in stock today?
The MAX197AENI is available from authorized aftermarket distributors including Rochester Electronics (franchised for legacy Maxim stock), Mouser, and DigiKey, though quantities are limited. Current pricing is approximately $18.45 per unit at qty-1, with volume discounts available. Lead times vary from immediate shipment (aftermarket stock) to 12-26 weeks (factory orders), as of 2026-10-15.
What is the lead time for MAX197AENI?
Lead time for the obsolete MAX197AENI depends on distributor stock: aftermarket franchised distributors like Rochester Electronics and Avnet typically ship immediately for small quantities, while factory orders require 12-26 weeks. Engineers designing new products are advised to use the MAX197BCNI+ (active production, same 28-pin PDIP) or migrate to MAX1300-series ADCs to avoid supply risk.
MAX197AENI vs MAX197BCNI — which is better for new designs?
The MAX197AENI (A grade) and MAX197BCNI+ (B grade) share the same 28-pin PDIP footprint, but the A-grade offers ±0.5 LSB INL while the B-grade offers ±1 LSB INL. For new designs the MAX197BCNI+ is preferred because it is still in production, eliminating the supply risk that has made the A-grade obsolete. Choose the A-grade only when you specifically need the better linearity and have verified stock.
Where can I download the MAX197AENI datasheet PDF?
The MAX197AENI datasheet PDF is available from Maxim Integrated's archived product page on Analog Devices (analog.com/en/products/max197.html), Alldatasheet.com, and FindIC. The document contains the complete functional description, pinout, electrical characteristics table, and timing diagrams for the 28-pin PDIP, SO, SSOP, and ceramic SB package variants. Designers should reference section 4 (Electrical Characteristics) and section 5 (Timing) for AC and DC specifications.
Where is the pinout diagram for MAX197AENI?
The MAX197AENI pinout is documented in the Maxim datasheet, section 2 (Pin Description). The 28-pin PDIP layout assigns analog inputs AIN0-AIN7 to pins 1-8, VDD/AGND/DGND supplies to pins 9-11, and the parallel digital data bus (D0-D7, D8-D11) along with control lines (CS, RD, WR, HBEN, INT) to the remaining pins 12-28. A printable pinout SVG is available on this product page.
Does the MAX197AENI need ±15V analog supplies?
No, the MAX197AENI operates from a single +5 V supply and accepts bipolar ±10 V analog inputs through internal input scaling resistors. This single-supply bipolar-input architecture eliminates the ±15 V rails traditionally required for industrial ADC front-ends, dramatically simplifying system power design. Only a single +5 V rail and adequate decoupling (10 µF bulk + 0.1 µF ceramic) at AVDD and DVDD pins are required.
Can a cross-brand ADC replace the MAX197AENI on the same PCB?
Yes, several cross-brand 12-bit 8-channel ADCs offer pin-to-pin compatibility with the MAX197AENI in the 28-pin PDIP footprint. Notable equivalents include Linear Technology (Analog Devices) LTC1290, Texas Instruments ADC0808 (8-bit) and ADS7841 (12-bit, but 4-channel), and National Semiconductor ADC0808 family. Engineers should verify register map and timing compatibility before substituting, as the control protocol differs across vendors.
What is the analog input overvoltage protection on the MAX197AENI?
The MAX197AENI analog inputs tolerate ±25 V without damage, regardless of whether the device is powered. This is enabled by integrated overvoltage clamping on each of the 8 input channels. The protection simplifies ESD handling during manufacturing and field service, and prevents damage if the input signal exceeds the selected ±10 V or ±5 V range due to a wiring fault or transducer failure.
Can MAX197AENI use an external voltage reference?
Yes, the MAX197AENI can be configured to use an external reference between 1.0 V and 4.096 V by tying REFADJ appropriately and driving the REF pin. This is recommended when absolute accuracy better than the internal 4.096 V reference is required, for example in precision temperature measurement. A typical choice is the AD584 or MAX6350 external reference. The internal reference should be disabled in this mode to prevent contention.
What are the key specifications of MAX197AENI that engineers should know?
The MAX197AENI provides 12-bit resolution, 100 ksps throughput, 8 analog input channels, single +5 V supply, ±10 V/±5 V/0-10 V/0-5 V software-selectable input ranges, internal 4.096 V reference, ±25 V input overvoltage protection, 28-pin PDIP package, and TTL/CMOS-compatible digital I/O. A-grade linearity is ±0.5 LSB INL. The device is now obsolete per Maxim, so design for the MAX197BCNI+ for new production.
What is the operating temperature range of MAX197AENI?
The MAX197AENI operates over the industrial temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The 'I' suffix in the part number MAX197AENI specifically denotes the industrial temperature grade. For extended-temperature applications (-55 °C to +125 °C), the MAX197AMYI variant (military grade, ceramic SB package) is available, though it is also obsolete. Designers targeting industrial environments should verify distributor stock at both temperature extremes.

Guide de sélection

Choose MAX197AENI when designing a multi-channel (±10 V bipolar inputs) data acquisition system from a single +5 V supply, particularly for industrial PLC analog input modules, process control, or test equipment requiring 100 ksps throughput. The 8-channel integrated multiplexer and software-configurable input ranges eliminate external signal conditioning, simplifying BOM and PCB layout. Prefer the MAX197BCNI+ for new designs because the A-grade MAX197AENI is obsolete; the B-grade offers the same pinout and ±1 LSB INL versus the A's ±0.5 LSB. Choose MAX196ACAI when 6 channels are sufficient and an SSOP package is preferred. Choose MAX195BCWE/MAX194BCPE only when 14-bit resolution outweighs the need for multi-channel input. Cross-brand drop-in equivalents are limited because the MAX197's unique combination of bipolar-input single-supply operation, parallel 8+4 bus, and 28-pin PDIP is not widely replicated outside Maxim's portfolio.

Notes de conception

The MAX197AENI operates from a single +5V supply; place a 10 µF tantalum or ceramic bulk capacitor in parallel with a 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor at the AVDD pin (pin 9). Use a separate 0.1 µF ceramic cap at DVDD (or AVSS if separate) and another 0.1 µF at the REF pin (pin 14). Keep the AVDD trace short and wide to minimize inductance. Tie AGND (pin 10) and DGND (pin 11) together at the device to avoid ground-loop noise; this common point then connects to the system analog ground plane. Estimated supply current is 15 mA during acquisition and 1.5 mA in shutdown mode.

Layout the analog input traces (AIN0-AIN7) as short as possible and route them away from digital lines (D0-D7, RD, WR, CS) to minimize crosstalk. Use a ground plane under the analog traces for shielding. If the input source impedance exceeds 1 kΩ, buffer with an external op-amp (e.g., MAX4475) before connecting to the AIN pin, since source impedance directly affects the input sampling capacitor's acquisition time and DC accuracy. The reference bypass capacitor (4.7 µF to 10 µF) at REF (pin 14) is critical for ADC noise performance.

The internal 4.096 V reference (pin 14) has ±1% initial accuracy and ±50 ppm/°C typical drift; for precision applications (better than ±0.5 LSB INL), drive the REF pin with an external low-drift reference such as MAX6350 (2.5 V) or MAX174AEPI (4.096 V). When using an external reference, tie REFADJ (pin 13) to VDD to disable the internal reference. The reference voltage is divided down by 4 to generate 1.024 V full-scale for the ADC core, so external reference stability directly translates to conversion accuracy. Add 0.1 µF + 4.7 µF bypass at the external reference output pin.

Common mistakes: (a) Exceeding the analog input source impedance of 1 kΩ without buffering causes gain error and AC distortion; add an external op-amp for higher-Z sources. (b) Failing to apply HBEN correctly when reading high-byte data leaves the lower 4 bits undefined; toggle HBEN properly per datasheet timing. (c) Driving analog inputs beyond ±25 V (the absolute maximum) destroys the device - even though ±25 V is the protection spec, continuous operation above this is destructive. (d) Skipping the shutdown sequence can cause corruption on the last conversion; always complete the current acquisition before entering SHDN mode.
