MC68HC001EI16 Présentation
A microprocessor (MPU) is the central processing unit of an embedded computer system, integrating the ALU, registers, instruction decoder, bus controller, and interrupt logic on a single die. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, the MC68HC001 belongs to the 32-bit CISC microprocessor family -> M68000 instruction set architecture -> Motorola/NXP embedded MPU lineage -> general-purpose embedded processing. The HC001 variant specifically drops the integrated MMU of the MC68010/MC68020 while keeping the original 32-bit programming model, address and data buses.
Key features include a 32-bit internal data path with 16-bit external data bus, 24-bit address bus (16 MB linear), 8 32-bit data registers, 8 32-bit address registers, 7 interrupt levels, and a vectored interrupt controller. The device operates from a single 5 V supply and supports dynamic bus sizing to access 8-bit and 16-bit peripherals seamlessly. It uses a static core design allowing clock rates down to DC, useful for low-power or step-debug applications.
Typical applications include industrial control, legacy embedded systems, automotive body controllers, communications equipment, point-of-sale terminals, and avionics retrofits where the M68000 instruction set must be retained. Because the part is mature, it is commonly used as a drop-in replacement for the original MC68000 in existing 68-pin PLCC designs.
When designing with the MC68HC001, take care to provide a clean, monotonic 5 V supply and a stable clock. Decoupling with 100 nF ceramic capacitors at each Vcc pin is mandatory. Designers migrating from the original MC68000 benefit from identical bus timing, so existing memory and peripheral interfaces typically work without modification.

Applications typiques
MC68HC001EI16 convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Control Systems, Legacy Embedded Computing, Point-of-Sale Terminals, Automotive Body Electronics, Communications Equipment, Test & Measurement Instrumentation.
Industrial Control Systems
The MC68HC001EI16's 16 MHz 32-bit CISC core and 24-bit address bus (16 MB) make it well-suited for industrial PLCs, motor controllers, and SCADA terminals. The M68000 instruction set provides deterministic interrupt handling with 7 priority levels, critical for real-time control loops. Its -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade ensures reliable operation in unconditioned factory environments. The static HCMOS core allows clock-throttling during idle periods for energy savings, while the proven 68-pin PLCC footprint simplifies PCB layout and field service.
Recommandé
Legacy Embedded Computing
The MC68HC001EI16 serves as a drop-in replacement for the original Motorola MC68000 in legacy 68-pin PLCC designs. Its HCMOS static core, identical bus timing, and M68000-compatible instruction set allow it to retrofit avionics, military radios, and industrial controllers without software rewrite. The 24-bit address space supports legacy memory maps, and the 16-bit external data bus preserves interface compatibility with existing peripherals. NRND status makes the HC001 ideal for sustaining legacy production lines where redesign is cost-prohibitive.
Recommandé
Point-of-Sale Terminals
POS terminals require reliable 32-bit processing for transaction handling, encryption, and display driving - exactly the role the MC68HC001EI16 fills in legacy designs. Its 16 MHz throughput handles serial I/O, keyboard scanning, and printer control without breaking a sweat. The 7-level vectored interrupt controller manages multiple peripherals (barcode scanner, card reader, receipt printer) deterministically. The 68-pin PLCC package is rugged for commercial environments and supports easy field replacement through standard IC sockets.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Electronics
Older automotive body controllers, instrument clusters, and HVAC modules use the MC68HC001EI16 as their main processor because of its -40C to +85C industrial grade and proven M68000 reliability. The static HCMOS core withstands automotive temperature swings and supply transients. The 16-bit external data bus interfaces easily with automotive peripherals like the MC338xx driver family. While newer designs use 32-bit ARM microcontrollers, the HC001 remains deployed in millions of vehicles on the road, requiring ongoing service and replacement stock.
Recommandé
Communications Equipment
Telecommunications infrastructure including legacy routers, PBX systems, and modem banks relied on the MC68HC001EI16 for packet processing and protocol management. The 32-bit instruction set with 16-bit external bus provides sufficient throughput for serial communications at T1/E1 rates. The 7 interrupt levels handle multiple DMA channels and serial ports cleanly. With mature toolchain support (gcc-m68k, assembler68000), the HC001 remains a cost-effective solution for maintaining legacy telecom hardware in service provider networks.
Recommandé
Test & Measurement Instrumentation
Older oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and bench instruments use the MC68HC001EI16 to manage display updates, GPIB interfaces, and signal processing. The deterministic interrupt response is valuable for triggering and sample capture. The 16 MB address space accommodates large waveform buffers and firmware images. The 68-pin PLCC socketed package simplifies calibration and repair in field service scenarios, where instruments must be returned to service quickly with minimal downtime.

Notes de conception
The MC68HC001EI16 requires a clean, monotonic 5V supply within +/-5% tolerance. Place a 100nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each Vcc pin (pins 1, 30, 65, 68) and a bulk 10uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the IC. Use a star-ground topology to isolate digital ground returns from analog grounds. Power sequencing is not required - RESET must be held low until the clock is stable and Vcc has reached specification, with a minimum reset pulse width of 100 ms.
Route the address and data buses with matched impedance and keep trace lengths within 50 mm to minimize skew. Place 33 ohm series damping resistors on each data bus signal if the total bus capacitance exceeds 100 pF. The CLK input is sensitive to noise - keep it short and shield it from switching outputs. Ground/power planes should be unbroken under the bus area; never route signal traces through the IC's power plane region. EPLD/FPGA glue logic should be placed within 25 mm of the HC001 to keep timing margins clean.
Do not connect the TST pin (pin 67) to anything except GND - leaving it floating or driving it high places the HC001 in factory test mode and prevents normal operation. Ensure DTACK is generated correctly by every peripheral; a stuck DTACK will hang the bus indefinitely. The 68000 cannot start without a valid clock - verify the oscillator starts up before releasing RESET. Bus arbitration requires proper sequencing of BR/BG/BGACK; do not tie BGACK directly low or DMA will never work.
