MX574ALEWI+TCDR Présentation
What is a SAR ADC? A successive-approximation-register ADC is a type of data converter that converts an analog input voltage into a digital code using a binary-search algorithm implemented with a comparator, a DAC, and a successive-approximation register. SAR ADCs occupy the sweet spot between slow integrating converters (which offer excellent linearity at low speed) and fast flash ADCs (which offer high speed but consume significant power and pin count). They deliver 8 to 18 bits of resolution at sample rates from a few hundred kSPS to a few MSPS, with deterministic latency, no pipeline delay, and very low power consumption - making them ideal for multiplexed data-acquisition systems, industrial process control, and instrumentation.
Key features of the MX574ALEWI+TCDR include ±1 LSB max integral linearity error (A-grade), 25µs maximum conversion time, a built-in +10V reference with ±0.25% initial accuracy, 12-bit parallel and serial interface options, and three-state output buffers that allow direct connection to microprocessor data buses. The device operates from ±12V or ±15V analog supplies with a +5V digital supply, and its bipolar-input capability simplifies signal-conditioning front ends for industrial sensors and audio equipment.
The MX574A architecture combines a precision thin-film resistor network, a CMOS comparator, a current-mode DAC, and a SAR register, all trimmed at the wafer level. This integration eliminates external trimming and allows designers to use the ADC immediately after power-up without calibration routines, which historically made the MX574A the de-facto industry-standard 12-bit ADC for both standalone and embedded data-acquisition boards.
Typical applications include industrial process control, multiplexed data-acquisition front ends, signal isolation front ends paired with opto-isolators, precision measurement instrumentation, audio digitizers, and embedded board-level designs where +12V supplies are available and -48V telecom battery monitoring is required.
When designing with this part, provide a clean +5V digital supply decoupled with 0.1µF and 10µF capacitors close to the supply pins. Use a separate analog ground plane for the input and reference sections, and route the 12-bit parallel bus away from the analog inputs to prevent digital coupling into the converter.

Applications typiques
MX574ALEWI+TCDR convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition, Multiplexed Data-Acquisition Front Ends, Signal Isolation Front End (Opto-Isolated ADC), Precision Measurement Instrumentation, Audio Band Digitizers and Prosumer Recorders, Embedded Board-Level and Retro-Computing Designs.
Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition
The MX574ALEWI+TCDR fits industrial process-control front ends where 4-20 mA or ±10 V transducer signals must be digitized with 12-bit accuracy at moderate throughput. Its ±10 V bipolar input range accepts signals directly from instrumentation amplifiers and strain-gauge bridges without external scaling, while the 25 µs conversion time (40 kSPS) is more than sufficient for thermal, pressure, and flow-loop update rates. The on-chip +10 V reference eliminates one precision component on the BOM. When deployed on a 16-channel multiplexer, the part can digitize a full rack of PLC analog inputs in well under 1 ms with negligible crosstalk from its 12-bit three-state parallel output.
Recommandé
Multiplexed Data-Acquisition Front Ends
For multiplexed data-acquisition boards with multiple analog channels, the MX574ALEWI+TCDR serves as the master digitizer driving the parallel bus of a microprocessor. Its 12-bit three-state output connects directly to a microcontroller data bus without glue logic, and its 25 µs conversion allows an 8-channel MUX to be scanned at >400 Hz aggregate rate. The internal +10 V reference and bipolar input range simplify signal conditioning, while the wide-body SOIC-28 package provides good thermal headroom for continuous operation in densely populated backplanes.
Recommandé
Signal Isolation Front End (Opto-Isolated ADC)
The MX574ALEWI+TCDR pairs naturally with digital isolators or opto-couplers for high-voltage or noise-immune isolation front ends. Place the ADC on the 'field' side of the isolation barrier, run its 12-bit parallel output through opto-isolators or iCouplers, and the high-voltage side of the system becomes immune to ground loops and common-mode surges. The 25 µs conversion latency fits the typical propagation delay of optocouplers, and the SOIC-28 package fits standard industrial isolation board footprints.
Recommandé
Precision Measurement Instrumentation
Bench-top multimeters, calibrators, and laboratory digitizers benefit from the MX574ALEWI+TCDR's ±1 LSB A-grade linearity and on-chip +10 V reference. The ±10 V bipolar range matches the output of most instrumentation amplifiers used with thermocouples, RTDs, and load cells. The 25 µs conversion time is far faster than the integration time of bench DMMs, allowing oversampling for noise reduction while maintaining real-time throughput for production test systems.
Recommandé
Audio Band Digitizers and Prosumer Recorders
For audio bandwidth applications up to ~20 kHz, the MX574ALEWI+TCDR provides 12-bit (72 dB) dynamic range in a bipolar ±10 V configuration. While not suitable for high-end studio audio, the part fits consumer and prosumer audio digitizers, automotive head-unit ADC channels, and speech-recognition front ends. The 25 µs conversion time and parallel output allow direct connection to a DSP or microcontroller without buffering, and the SOIC-28 package fits standard 2-layer audio board designs.
Recommandé
Embedded Board-Level and Retro-Computing Designs
Embedded SBCs, retro-computer expansion boards, and industrial controllers use the MX574ALEWI+TCDR as a parallel-bus ADC that connects directly to 8085/Z80/6800-family microprocessors without glue logic. The 12-bit three-state output interfaces directly to 8-bit or 16-bit data buses via the 8-bit/12-bit mode strapping. The SOIC-28 footprint is also friendly to through-hole prototyping adapter boards, making this part a long-time favorite for educational lab kits and hobby projects that need an industry-standard ADC.

Notes de conception
The MX574ALEWI+TCDR requires three supplies: V+ (+12 V or +15 V analog), V- (-12 V or -15 V analog), and VCC (+5 V digital). Decouple each analog supply with a 10 µF tantalum in parallel with a 0.1 µF ceramic placed as close as possible to the supply pins. Add a ferrite bead between the analog +5 V rail (used for the reference) and the noisy digital +5 V rail to prevent digital switching noise from coupling into the on-chip +10 V reference and degrading linearity.
Use a four-layer PCB with a continuous analog ground plane beneath the MX574ALEWI+TCDR. Route the 12-bit parallel DB0-DB11 bus on the opposite side of the board from the analog input trace, with each digital line carrying a series 33 Ω damping resistor to reduce switching transients coupling into the analog input. Place the external gain and offset trim potentiometers within 10 mm of pins 6 and 7, and connect their wiper arms directly to the appropriate trim pins with no shared ground noise.
Do not leave the analog input floating during power-up - the input bias current can drift the internal auto-calibration DAC and introduce a DC offset error on the first conversion. Tie the analog input to GND through a 10 kΩ resistor if no signal source is connected. Also, ensure R/C (pin 24) and CE (pin 25) are not both asserted simultaneously during power-up, or the part may latch into an undefined conversion state requiring a power-cycle to recover.
Drive the analog input with a low-impedance buffer op-amp such as the MAX4208 or OPA2277 with a series 10 Ω resistor at the ADC input pin. The MX574ALEWI+TCDR input draws transient current during the internal DAC settling; without the buffer, source impedance above 1 kΩ will degrade linearity and add gain error. Add a 1 nF capacitor in parallel with the 10 Ω resistor at the input pin to absorb the DAC switching transients.
