PIC16F1507-E/GZ Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1507-E/GZ is an 8-bit PIC16F-family flash microcontroller running up to 20 MHz instruction rate, integrating 3.5 KB (2K x 14 words) of self-read/write flash program memory, 128 bytes of RAM, and 12 I/O lines in a 20-pin UQFN (4x4 mm) package with an exposed thermal pad.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small, self-contained computing system on a single chip that combines an 8-bit CPU core, program memory (flash/ROM), data memory (RAM), digital I/O, and one or more on-chip peripherals (ADC, timers, PWM, communication modules). PIC16F-series MCUs sit within Microchip's PIC16 enhanced mid-range architecture, a position in the broader taxonomy of microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> flash MCU -> PIC16F family -> enhanced mid-range core. They are typically used in cost-sensitive, low-power embedded control tasks where deterministic instruction execution and a compact footprint matter more than raw computational throughput.

Key features include a 10-bit A/D converter with up to 12 channels, an internal 16 MHz high-precision oscillator, four 10-bit stand-alone PWM channels, a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), a Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO), two Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), an integrated temperature indicator, and 25 mA source/sink capability per I/O for direct LED drive. Core self-programmability supports in-field firmware updates, while a 16-level deep hardware stack supports nested subroutines with 49 base instructions and 14-bit instruction words.

The PIC16F1507 uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range core with a 200 ns instruction cycle at 20 MHz and nanopower technology for low sleep current. The on-chip peripherals are routed via a flexible peripheral pin-select (PPS)-style mapping on most variants in this family, allowing designers to remap digital functions to different I/O pins to ease PCB layout. The 20-UQFN (4x4 mm) exposed-pad package supports improved thermal dissipation and an extremely compact board area.

Typical applications include general-purpose low-cost embedded control, LED lighting and decorative effects using CWG and PWM, consumer appliance user-interface and timer logic, sensor signal conditioning with the integrated 10-bit ADC, low-power battery-powered sensor nodes, and small motor/PWM control loops in white goods. The part is widely used in PIC-based prototyping platforms and educational development kits.

When designing with this device, populate all VDD/VSS pin pairs and bond the exposed pad to the ground plane for thermal and electrical performance. Configure the CONFIG words using MPLAB X IDE and the XC8 compiler, and use Microchip's Code Configurator (MCC) plug-in to graphically configure peripherals such as the CWG, NCO and CLC blocks. For low-power designs, verify the actual IDD versus the typical curves in the datasheet, since temperature and clock configuration significantly affect quiescent current.

Applications typiques

PIC16F1507-E/GZ convient pour 7 applications: Low-Cost Embedded Control, LED Lighting and Decorative Effects, Sensor Signal Conditioning, Battery-Powered IoT Edge Nodes, White Goods and Appliance Control, Automotive Auxiliary Modules, Education and Prototyping Platforms.

🔧

Low-Cost Embedded Control

The PIC16F1507-E/GZ fits general-purpose embedded control roles where 3.5 KB of self-programmable flash, 128 bytes of RAM and 12 I/O lines are enough to read a few sensors, drive outputs and run a small state machine. Its enhanced mid-range core executes instructions in 200 ns at 20 MHz, giving clean deterministic timing for polling loops, debounced key handling and serial-bit-banged protocols. The 2.3-5.5 V VDD range covers both 3.3 V and 5 V rails commonly found in appliance and consumer boards, and nanopower sleep plus a 16 MHz internal oscillator let designers drop the external crystal in cost-sensitive designs.

💡

LED Lighting and Decorative Effects

The PIC16F1507-E/GZ is well suited to LED driver and decorative-effect designs thanks to its four 10-bit stand-alone PWM channels and the on-chip Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG). The CWG can produce complementary PWM outputs with programmable dead-band control for half-bridge LED chains and RGB strips, while the 25 mA source/sink per I/O drives small LEDs directly without external transistors. The 20 MHz core keeps color-mixing updates jitter-free, and the 20-UQFN 4x4 mm footprint plus exposed-pad thermal path lets designers pack dense LED matrices into small form factors.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning

Sensor-interface applications benefit from the PIC16F1507-E/GZ's 10-bit ADC with up to 12 input channels, integrated temperature indicator and flexible timer/capture peripherals. The ADC supports basic temperature, voltage and resistive-sensor bridge reads at a sample rate suitable for slow control loops, while the on-chip temperature indicator gives an independent silicon-die temperature for monitoring. The 2.3-5.5 V supply accommodates typical 3.3 V sensor rails, and the small 20-UQFN footprint suits compact sensor modules where PCB area is at a premium.

📱

Battery-Powered IoT Edge Nodes

Battery-powered edge nodes and remote sensors use the PIC16F1507-E/GZ to keep average current in the single-digit microamp range while still providing periodic ADC sampling and PWM-driven wake events. The internal 16 MHz oscillator eliminates an external crystal, further reducing sleep-mode leakage paths, and nanopower sleep with peripheral clock gating lets the MCU wake on timer or pin change. With 128 bytes of RAM and 3.5 KB flash, the device runs small C-coded sensor stacks from MPLAB X IDE and XC8 with low memory overhead.

🏭

White Goods and Appliance Control

White-goods and small-appliance control boards commonly use the PIC16F1507-E/GZ for user-interface timing, motor PWM, valve and relay drive, and front-panel indicator logic. The CWG block can produce complementary PWM outputs for small BLDC or triac-friendly control loops, while the 25 mA I/O source/sink drives optocouplers, triacs and LED indicators directly. The extended -40 C to +125 C temperature grade makes the -E/GZ variant suitable for the heat-stressed environments inside ovens, dryers and similar appliances.

🚗

Automotive Auxiliary Modules

Although the PIC16F1507-E/GZ is industrial/extended-grade rather than AEC-Q100 qualified, designers use it in non-safety automotive auxiliary modules such as interior LED controllers, accessory lighting, and climate-control trim panels where -40 C to +125 C operation is required but full automotive qualification is not. The CWG and 10-bit PWM channels drive RGB ambient lighting strips, while the small 20-UQFN 4x4 mm package fits behind tight bezel spaces. For safety-critical or AEC-Q100 designs, migrate to a Microchip VAO-graded PIC16F1507 variant or higher automotive part.

🖥️

Education and Prototyping Platforms

The PIC16F1507-E/GZ is a frequent choice in PIC education kits and hobbyist prototyping boards because it offers a full set of enhanced mid-range peripherals - CWG, NCO, CLC, ADC, PWM - in a tiny, hand-placeable 20-UQFN footprint. The MPLAB X IDE, XC8 compiler and Code Configurator (MCC) plug-in let students graph out peripherals and generate initialization code quickly, accelerating the learning curve. Sample code from Microchip's app notes and the PIC community covers PWM, ADC and UART on this part, so beginners can reach a working prototype in days.

Notes de conception

Estimated: with all I/O unloaded at 20 MHz, the PIC16F1507-E/GZ typically draws 1.8-3 mA active at 5 V from the datasheet curves. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair and bond the exposed pad directly to the ground plane to keep digital switching noise out of the analog ADC readings. For battery-powered designs, use sleep mode with peripheral clock gating and the internal 16 MHz oscillator to drop average current well below 1 mA.

Estimated: the 20-UQFN 4x4 mm package has a thermal pad that must be soldered to a ground copper pour of at least ~10 x 10 mm to keep the junction temperature within safe limits at 20 MHz. Keep ADC traces short and routed away from PWM edges to reduce coupling, and place the decoupling capacitors within ~3 mm of their respective VDD pins. Avoid running switching signals under the exposed pad to prevent noise injection into the silicon substrate.

Do not assume the PIC16F1507-E/GZ is AEC-Q100 qualified - the -E grade is industrial/extended temperature, not automotive. Use proper CONFIG word values for the internal oscillator, watchdog and brown-out settings; wrong CONFIG values can lock the part into an unprogrammed state and prevent ICSP re-entry. Always tie MCLR high through a resistor (10 kohm typical) rather than leaving it floating, or the MCU can spuriously reset in noisy environments.

Estimated: route the ICSP clock and data lines (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT) so that no high-current switching traces cross them, and keep them short to avoid programming/debug failures in production. Maintain a clearance of at least 0.2 mm between analog ADC inputs and digital PWM outputs to preserve ADC accuracy. Place a guard ground trace between the analog VDD/VSS pins and the digital switching region to reduce substrate noise coupling.
