PIC16F1513T-I/SS Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1513T-I/SS is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller featuring 7KB (4K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 256 bytes of SRAM, and a 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), housed in a 28-pin Shrink Small Outline Package (SSOP). The "T" suffix denotes Tape & Reel packaging, "I" indicates the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, and "/SS" specifies the 28-SSOP package. The device belongs to Microchip's PIC® XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) family, achieving nanoWatt XLP sleep currents ideal for battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications.

A PIC microcontroller is a compact, self-contained computer-on-a-chip built around a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) Harvard architecture. It integrates a CPU core, non-volatile Flash program memory, volatile SRAM, on-chip peripherals (ADC, timers, PWM, communications), and digital I/O pins into a single IC. The PIC16F1513 sits in the mid-range PIC16F1xxx family, positioned above the PIC16F1503/1507/1508/1509 entry-level XLP parts and below the PIC16F171x/176x higher-pin-count variants. Its 28-pin SSOP footprint makes it popular in space-constrained designs that need more I/O than an 8-bit PIC in 14- or 20-pin packages can offer.

Key features include a 20 MHz internal oscillator (with 31 kHz LFINTOSC option for low-power modes), 18 ADC channels with 10-bit resolution, Enhanced Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (EUSART), Master Synchronous Serial Port (MSSP) supporting SPI and I²C, multiple 16-bit timers (TMR1 with gate control, TMR3), 10-bit PWM with up to 4 outputs, and an enhanced Power-On Reset / Brown-Out Reset (POR/BOR). The XLP technology delivers typical sleep currents below 100 nA with Real-Time Clock active, extending battery life in wireless sensor and metering applications.

The architecture uses a 14-bit instruction word and a 14-bit program memory bus, allowing single-word instructions to execute in one instruction cycle (4 clock periods). On-chip in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) and in-circuit debugging (ICD) are supported via standard Microchip development tools (MPLAB X IDE, PICkit™ 5, MPLAB Snap), making the device accessible to engineers across hobby, education, and production settings.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered wireless transmitters, home automation controllers, LED lighting drivers, low-end consumer appliances, motor control signal conditioning, industrial sensor interfaces, and remote control receivers. The combination of low-power sleep modes, generous ADC channel count, and standard serial peripherals suits multi-channel analog monitoring where wall power is unavailable.

When designing with the PIC16F1513T-I/SS, plan for decoupling on VDD/VCORE with 100 nF and 10 µF bulk capacitors placed within a few millimetres of the pins. Choose low-power ICSP pin assignments carefully if your PCB exposes the ICSP header - both ICSPCLK and ICSPDAT pins are shared with general-purpose I/O, so adding a low-value series resistor (typically 100 Ω to 470 Ω) can isolate debug circuits from production noise. Operating voltage range spans 1.8 V to 5.5 V.

Notes de conception

Estimated: at 20 MHz active and 3.3 V VDD, the PIC16F1513T-I/SS typically draws around 2 mA active current. In Sleep with Watchdog disabled, this drops to under 100 nA, per the XLP datasheet. Always place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (pins 7 and 20) and a bulk 10 µF on the supply rail. For battery-powered designs, configure the LFINTOSC to 31 kHz before entering Sleep and use Timer1 with external 32.768 kHz crystal for RTC operation.

Route the ICSP lines (RA0/ICSPDAT and RA1/ICSPCLK) directly to a 2x3 or 1x6 programming header with no series resistors in normal production. For in-circuit debugging in noisy environments, add 100 Ω to 470 Ω series resistors on these lines, and ensure no high-current traces run parallel to ICSP for more than 25 mm to avoid coupling. Keep the SSOP-28 thermal pad on the package connected to VSS or left floating - the SSOP-28 has no exposed thermal pad unlike QFN variants.

Do not leave the MCLR pin floating - tie it to VDD through a 10 kΩ pull-up for normal operation, or to a debugger reset line during development. The PIC16F1513T-I/SS does not have internal MCLR pull-up on all revisions; check the CONFIG register settings in your code. Also avoid using RA0/RA1 as analog inputs and ICSP simultaneously - configure the APFCON register so the ICSP function does not interfere with sensor sampling.

When using the ADC at 10-bit resolution, add a 10 nF bypass capacitor at the VREF+ pin (RA3) if a separate voltage reference is used. Source impedance above 10 kΩ on ADC inputs causes acquisition-time errors and reduces effective resolution. For multi-channel scanning above 50 ksps, switch to the internal 2.048 V or 4.096 V FVR reference to minimize reference drift across the operating temperature range.
