PIC16F1719-I/MV Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1719-I/MV is a cost-effective 8-bit PIC microcontroller with 28KB Flash, 2KB RAM, and 32 MHz operation, housed in a 40-pin UQFN (5x5 mm) package with exposed pad. It belongs to the PIC16F1717/8/9 family and integrates Intelligent Analog peripherals (Op Amps, 10-bit ADC with computation, 5/8-bit DAC), Core Independent Peripherals (CLC, COG, NCO, ZCD) and Peripheral Pin Select for flexible pin mapping.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, Flash program memory, SRAM, and a rich set of peripherals (ADC, timers, communication interfaces). PIC microcontrollers are based on a modified Harvard RISC architecture optimized for deterministic, low-power embedded control. The PIC16F1719 sits within Microchip's mid-range MCU portfolio: PIC (family) -> PIC16 (sub-family) -> PIC16F1719 (device) -> 8-bit microcontroller -> embedded MCU -> semiconductor IC.

Key features include up to 32 MHz CPU speed, 28KB self-programmable Flash with 16K x 14 word organization, 2KB RAM, 256B EEPROM, two operational amplifiers, one 10-bit ADC, two 5-bit and one 8-bit DAC, Enhanced PWM, multiple communication peripherals (EUSART, I2C, SPI), and Microchip's eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology. Voltage operation is 2.3V to 5.5V for the LF variant; the F variant operates up to 5.5V.

The device uses a 14-bit instruction word and 8-bit data path with a hardware multiplier, enabling efficient C and assembly code generation. The on-chip op amps and 10-bit ADC with automated Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) make it well suited for sensor interfaces, while CLC and NCO support generation of custom waveforms and high-resolution timing without CPU intervention.

Typical applications include sensor signal conditioning, LED lighting control, low-power IoT nodes, household appliances, and general-purpose embedded control. The PIC16F1719 also fits battery-powered designs thanks to XLP sleep currents in the microamp range.

When designing with this MCU, reserve the exposed pad (EP) as a thermal/ground bond - the UQFN EP must be soldered to a sufficient copper pour for electrical and thermal performance. Choose the LF (PIC16LF1719) variant if you must operate below 2.3V.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC16F1719-I/MV fits battery-powered IoT sensor nodes by combining 28KB Flash for over-the-air update logic with XLP (eXtreme Low Power) sleep currents in the nanoamp range. Its 10-bit ADC with CVD (Capacitive Voltage Divider) supports touch/proximity wake-up events, and the NCO plus CLC peripherals generate timing-critical waveforms without CPU intervention, allowing the core to remain in sleep for extended periods.

🏭

Sensor Signal Conditioning

On-chip operational amplifiers, a 10-bit ADC, and 5/8-bit DACs make the PIC16F1719-I/MV well suited for analog sensor signal conditioning without external op-amp ICs. The integrated op amps can buffer and amplify low-level sensor outputs (thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges) while the ADC's hardware CVD supports capacitive touch and level sensing. This eliminates 2-3 external analog ICs and reduces BOM cost in industrial sensor modules.

💡

LED Lighting Control

The PIC16F1719-I/MV drives multi-channel LED lighting systems using its Enhanced PWM (ECCP) modules and 8-bit DAC for smooth dimming. The NCO (Numerically Controlled Oscillator) and CLC (Configurable Logic Cell) offload fade math and PWM-dithering tasks from the CPU, freeing cycles for communication stacks like DMX or DALI. Current consumption in idle states stays low enough for always-on lighting fixtures with standby power budgets under 0.5 W.

🏭

Household Appliance Control

The PIC16F1719-I/MV handles motor, valve, and user-interface control in white goods such as washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators. With 32 MHz CPU speed, Enhanced PWM for motor drive, EUSART/I2C/SPI for HMI communication, and on-chip op amps for analog sensor interfaces, the MCU consolidates multiple functions onto a single device. The 40-pin UQFN footprint simplifies layout and the wide 2.3V-5.5V range covers both 3.3V logic and 5V analog sensor rails.

📱

Battery-Powered Wearable Devices

The PIC16F1719-I/MV suits fitness bands and wearable health monitors thanks to its XLP technology, which keeps sleep current in the nanoamp range while peripheral modules run autonomously. The 10-bit ADC acquires heart-rate or motion sensor data, CLC and NCO offload timing-critical filtering, and PPS reassigns peripherals to alternate pins to optimize PCB layout under tight mechanical constraints. The compact 40-pin UQFN (5x5 mm) fits small form factors.

🏭

  • Wider operating voltage range than the LF variant (vs PIC16LF1719-E/MV)

Notes de conception

The 40-pin UQFN package has a large central exposed pad that must be soldered to a sufficient PCB ground copper pour (recommended minimum 1 sq inch continuous ground plane). Leaving the EP unsoldered can cause thermal stress, electrical discontinuities, and EMI degradation. Add multiple thermal vias under the EP to improve heat dissipation and reduce ground impedance for the analog blocks.

Place 100 nF decoupling capacitors as close as possible to every VDD/AVDD pin and a single bulk capacitor (e.g., 10 uF) near the MCU. The PIC16F1719 has separate analog (AVDD/AVSS) and digital (VDD/VSS) supply pins to reduce digital switching noise coupling into the ADC; tie AVDD to VDD via a small ferrite bead or filter if high-precision ADC readings are required. Use PPS to remap peripherals to pins away from high-frequency switching traces.

The PIC16F1719-F (non-LF) variant is rated 2.3V to 5.5V; operating below 2.3V will cause Flash read errors and ADC inaccuracy. If the design runs from a 1.8V rail, use the PIC16LF1719 instead. Also note that the MCLR pin (RE3) is input-only on this family and has an internal pull-up enabled by configuration bits; leave it disconnected if not used for in-circuit programming.
