PIC16F1827-E/MV Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1827-E/MV is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ mTouch™ flash microcontroller (MCU) running at up to 32 MHz internal clock, integrating 7 KB (4K x 14) of self-programmable Flash program memory, 384 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a compact 28-pin UQFN (4x4 mm) package. It belongs to the PIC16F1826/27 family of enhanced mid-range devices featuring nanoWatt XLP extreme-low-power technology.

A PIC16F182x microcontroller is an 8-bit RISC-based CMOS flash MCU in Microchip's PIC® mid-range family. The PIC® architecture executes single-cycle instructions (200 ns @ 20 MHz instruction clock) and integrates on-board peripherals such as ADC, comparators, PWM, mTouch™ capacitive touch sensing, and a configurable logic cell. The device sits in the microcontroller hierarchy: PIC16F1827 → PIC16F1xxx family → 8-bit PIC® MCU → Microcontroller → Microprocessor/IC.

Key features include 16 I/O pins, 12-bit ADC with up to 12 channels, two 8-bit and one 10-bit timers, Enhanced Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (EUSART), SPI/I²C, nanoWatt XLP technology with <50 nA typical sleep current, mTouch™ capacitive sensing module, and an integrated temperature indicator. The wide 1.8V to 5.5V operating range simplifies device FDD and supports both battery and regulated-rail systems.

The architecture combines a RISC CPU with on-chip programmable peripherals and a 14-bit instruction word, providing strong code density in a small footprint. The XLP technology reduces active current to ~50 µA/MHz and sleep current to ~20–50 nA, enabling multi-year coin-cell operation for energy-harvesting and remote-sensor designs.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, capacitive-touch user interfaces, battery-powered handheld instruments, low-cost consumer appliances, LED lighting control, and small motor/relay drivers. The mTouch™ peripheral enables solid-state buttons and sliders that eliminate mechanical wear in appliance and industrial-control front panels.

When laying out a PCB for the PIC16F1827-E/MV, place a 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to VDD and route the exposed pad (EP) to a solid ground plane for thermal and noise performance. The PIC16F1827-E/MV ships in industrial (-40 °C to +125 °C) temperature grade suitable for harsh-environment designs.

Données de référence d'ingénierie pour PIC16F1827-E/MV — comparaison, recommandations de conception et informations de conformité.

Guide de sélection

Choose PIC16F1827-E/MV when designing a low-power 8-bit MCU application that needs 7 KB Flash, mTouch capacitive sensing, and industrial -40 to +125 C temperature grade in a 28-UQFN (4x4 mm) footprint. Choose PIC16F1827-I/MV if -40 to +85 C is sufficient and you need the same die at a lower cost. Choose PIC16F1826-E/MV to save cost when your firmware fits in 3.5 KB. Choose PIC16LF1827-E/MV for 3.3 V-only systems where the lower VDD max reduces BOM (no need for 5 V rail). Choose PIC16F1713-E/MV for designs needing on-chip OPAMPs, DACs, and zero-cross detection. All five share the same 28-UQFN (MV) footprint enabling single-PCB support across the family.

Notes de conception

Place a 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to the VDD pin (pin 5 or 24) with a wide ground return to the VSS pin. For the 28-UQFN (MV) package, the exposed pad (EP) on the bottom of the IC must be soldered to a continuous PCB ground plane - this provides the primary thermal dissipation path and is electrically required for reliable operation. Keep analog traces (ADC inputs, voltage reference) short and away from PWM or switching signals to minimize coupled noise into measurements.

To achieve the 20–50 nA sleep current quoted in datasheet 41391D, disable all unused peripherals (ADC, comparators, MSSP, EUSART, timers, PWM) before issuing the SLEEP instruction. Set all unused I/O pins as outputs driving low to prevent floating-input leakage. Use the LFINTOSC 31 kHz clock or PWRT sleep with RTCC + WDT only when timekeeping is needed. The LF-series variant (PIC16LF1827) further reduces sleep current at the cost of a lower VDD maximum.

The PIC16F1827-E/MV uses the UQFN-28 package whose exposed thermal pad (EP) is electrically connected to VSS internally and must be soldered to the ground plane for both thermal and mechanical reliability. Do not connect the EP to any net other than ground, as this can cause erratic behavior. For ICSP programming, the MCLR/VPP pin (pin 3) must not be pulled low at power-up, otherwise the device enters reset; use a 10 kΩ pull-up to VDD. Pin RB3/PGEC and RB6/ICSPCLK must be high-impedance (not driven low) during reset for in-circuit programming to function.
