PIC16F18875-I/ML Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path, integrating CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile data memory (SRAM), small EEPROM, and a rich set of peripherals (ADC, timers, communication, comparators). PIC16 MCUs sit within Microchip's broader 8-bit MCU taxonomy: PIC10/12/16/18 families -> 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. They are commonly chosen when deterministic real-time behavior, low power, low cost, and small package footprint matter more than raw computational throughput.
Key features of the PIC16F18875 include multiple 10-bit ADC modules with computation (ADC2), Digital Signal Modulator (DSM), Zero-Cross Detect (ZCD), configurable logic cells (CLC), Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), 5-/8-/16-bit timers with PWM, Hardware Limit Timer (HLT), Windowed Watchdog Timer (WWDT), and a 32 MHz internal oscillator. Up to 36 I/O pins support peripheral pin select (PPS), and integrated CIPs enable sensor, lighting, and motor control loops without CPU intervention.
Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, home appliance control panels, battery-powered metering, LED lighting drivers, automotive body and comfort subsystems, and industrial sensor interfaces. The device supports 1.8 V to 5.5 V operation (the 'F' denotes Flash and 'I' denotes industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature range). Functional Safety documentation assists IEC 61508 / ISO 26262 customers in building safety-ready systems.
When designing with this MCU, allocate sufficient PCB copper under the QFN exposed pad for thermal dissipation and provide at least one decoupling capacitor (100 nF plus 1-10 uF bulk) per power pin pair. For noise-sensitive analog work, keep ADC traces short and route the AVdd/AVss pins separately from digital supply rails. Program via ICSP using the PGD/PGC pins, leaving those lines accessible on the PCB for in-field firmware updates.

Applications typiques
PIC16F18875-I/ML convient pour 8 applications: IoT Sensor Node, Home Appliance Control Panel, Battery-Powered Metering, LED Lighting Driver, Automotive Body & Comfort Module, Industrial Sensor Interface, Consumer HMI & Touch Interface, Motor Control for Small BLDC / Stepper.
IoT Sensor Node
The PIC16F18875-I/ML is well suited to wireless IoT sensor nodes because its XLP nanoWatt sleep currents drop below 100 nA in Retention mode, extending coin-cell battery life to multiple years. The 14 KB Flash holds a small RTOS scheduler plus sensor and radio drivers, while Core Independent Peripherals (CLC, DSM, ADC2) wake the core only on meaningful events, saving power without CPU intervention.
Recommandé
Home Appliance Control Panel
In washing machines, dishwashers, and microwave oven control boards, the PIC16F18875-I/ML delivers enough GPIO for segmented LCD drive, capacitive touch via CTMU, and triac-firing PWM outputs. The integrated CWG peripheral generates complementary PWM for synchronous motor or PFC stages without CPU load, and Hardware Limit Timer (HLT) provides hardware-based safety shutdown that is independent of firmware faults.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Metering
Smart water, gas, and electricity meters benefit from the PIC16F18875-I/ML's 10-bit ADC2 with computation averaging differential sensor signals with low drift. Its 1.8 V minimum Vdd permits direct operation from a single Li-SOCl2 cell, while the WWDT and CRC/SCAN peripherals provide IEC 60730 Class B safety hooks. The 256-byte EEPROM logs rolling interval counters without external NVM.
Recommandé
LED Lighting Driver
The PIC16F18875-I/ML drives multi-channel LED lighting fixtures using its 16-bit PWM with CWG for high-resolution dimming down to sub-1% steps. Its 32 MHz clock provides ample PWM frequency headroom above the audible band, eliminating inductor whine, while the DSM peripheral generates dithered patterns for color-mixing without CPU overhead. The wide 1.8-5.5 V supply range supports both 3.3 V logic and 5 V analog LED chains.
Recommandé
Automotive Body & Comfort Module
Within automotive body control modules for seat, mirror, window lift, and interior lighting, the PIC16F18875-I/ML's LIN-ready EUSART and PWM-rich timers integrate directly with vehicle bus networks. The PIC16F18875-E/ML extended temperature grade meets under-dash thermal requirements, and Functional Safety (FuSa) documentation accelerates ISO 26262 qualification. The exposed-pad QFN provides robust thermal dissipation for always-on operation.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Interface
Factory floor sensors leveraging 4-20 mA loops, RTDs, or bridge transducers pair well with the PIC16F18875-I/ML's 10-bit ADC2 and built-in op-amp peripherals for signal conditioning. The CRC/SCAN hardware block monitors Flash integrity for IEC 61508 SIL-1 capable deployments, and the WWDT enforces firmware flow with a hardware-implemented watchdog independent of code execution. The 44-QFN footprint tolerates harsh environments when conformal coated.
Recommandé
Consumer HMI & Touch Interface
The PIC16F18875-I/ML's Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) drives projected-capacitive or self-capacitance touch buttons on appliance, audio, or smart-home control surfaces. Its 14 KB Flash comfortably fits mTouch firmware plus a USB or UART command interface, while CLC logic cells combine PWM and timer events without MCU wakeup. The 44-QFN's small footprint suits slim consumer enclosures.
Recommandé
Motor Control for Small BLDC / Stepper
Low-power BLDC fans, small stepper-driven actuators, and micro-pumps use the PIC16F18875-I/ML's CWG for synchronous commutation PWM and QEI for closed-loop position feedback. The 32 MHz instruction rate delivers the deterministic interrupt latency required for sensorless back-EMF zero-cross detection, and the integrated op-amp senses phase currents directly. Field-oriented control is possible for sub-50 W motors.

Notes de conception
The 44-pin QFN exposes a thermal pad (pin 0) that MUST be soldered to a PCB ground pour for proper thermal dissipation and to meet the datasheet's 32 MHz operation across industrial temperatures. Provide a continuous ground plane under the device and stitch vias around the thermal pad to inner ground layers. Decouple each VDD/AVDD pin pair with a 100 nF X7R ceramic placed as close as possible to the IC (under 2 mm trace length).
For battery-powered designs, leverage the XLP sleep modes by configuring all unused peripherals off and disabling the ADC, voltage reference, and FVR before WFI sleep. The datasheet's IDD retention figures show sub-100 nA achievable with WDT off and RTCC running from a 32 kHz source. Use peripheral pin select (PPS) to route wake-up sources to interrupt-capable pins so the core does not need to remain active.
Do not connect the ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK pins (RB6/RB7) to loads that would prevent in-circuit serial programming during manufacturing. A series 4.7 kohm resistor to the target circuit is a common compromise. Also, ensure VREF+ is tied to AVDD with a decoupling capacitor when the internal voltage reference is disabled; floating AVDD under heavy ADC sampling causes conversion drift.
Separate analog and digital ground domains on the PCB and join them at a single point near the MCU's AVSS/AVDD pin pair. This avoids digital return currents contaminating the analog reference. For ADC2 measurements below 10 LSB of full scale, add a guard ring around the analog input traces and keep them short, away from PWM outputs and clock lines.
