PIC16F1934T-I/ML Présentation
What is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller? A PIC microcontroller (Programmable Interface Controller) is a Harvard-architecture RISC processor family from Microchip Technology that integrates CPU core, Flash program memory, RAM, EEPROM, peripherals (timers, ADC, PWM, communication modules, I/O), and in this case an LCD segment driver, onto a single die. The PIC16F193x family sits in the PIC16 mid-range tier between the PIC10/12/16 baseline family and PIC18/dsPIC33 enhanced families, offering low cost, low power, and a generous peripheral mix including a built-in LCD driver that eliminates an external driver chip in display applications.
Key features include 25 digital I/O pins (shared with segment and analog functions), a 10-bit ADC with up to 14 channels, multiple PWM modules, an integrated LCD driver supporting up to 96 segments, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, an enhanced USART, an MSSP module for SPI and I2C (master/slave), nanoWatt XLP sleep currents below 1 uA in selected modes, an integrated voltage reference, and a low-power BOR/LVD.
Architecturally the device uses a RISC Harvard core with single-cycle instruction decode (except branches) and a 14-bit instruction word; the Flash program memory supports self-programmability via ICSP and runs directly from the internal 32 MHz oscillator with no external crystal required for most designs. The LCD driver uses an internal charge pump and dedicated segment/common pins shared with GPIO, allowing common-glass LCDs (up to 4 common, 24 segment lines) to be driven without external bias resistors.
Typical applications include battery-powered metering (gas, water, electricity), handheld thermometers and consumer appliances with LCD readout, IoT sensor nodes and remote controls, white-goods and HVAC user-interface panels, and automotive interior modules (cluster/trim displays). Designers favor this family for cost-sensitive products that need an integrated segmented display without an additional driver IC.
Design tip: route the exposed pad (EP) of the 44-QFN to a continuous ground copper pour with multiple thermal vias for both electrical reference and thermal dissipation. The internal charge-pump capacitors for the LCD driver need a 1 uF X7R on the LCDCAP pin, and the segment lines require appropriate bias on VDD for stable contrast across the operating temperature range.

Applications typiques
PIC16F1934T-I/ML convient pour 7 applications: Battery-Powered Utility Meters (Gas / Water / Electricity), Consumer Appliance Control Panels with LCD, Handheld Thermometers and Medical Diagnostic Devices, IoT Sensor Nodes with Segmented LCD Status Display, HVAC Thermostats and Climate-Control User Interfaces, Automotive Interior Trim Modules (Cluster / Switch Panels), White-Goods Display Modules (Refrigerator / Dishwasher Front Panels).
Battery-Powered Utility Meters (Gas / Water / Electricity)
The PIC16F1934T-I/ML is widely deployed in battery-powered metering because its nanoWatt XLP sleep current stays below 1 uA while the integrated LCD driver displays kWh readings on a 96-segment segmented glass. With 7 KB Flash and 256 B RAM, the firmware fits a metering state machine plus tamper detection; the 1.8-5.5 V range supports direct connection to a single lithium cell with a boost converter, removing the need for a 3.3 V LDO. Compared to discrete LCD drivers, the on-chip LCD module saves a $0.30-$0.60 BOM line and reduces PCB area by ~25%.
Recommandé
Consumer Appliance Control Panels with LCD
Washing machines, microwave ovens, and induction cooktops use the PIC16F1934T-I/ML to drive segmented LCD user interfaces while running motor, relay, and temperature sensor control loops. The 10-bit ADC with up to 14 channels reads thermistor inputs directly, and the ECCP/CCP PWM module generates timer-controlled gate signals for TRIAC-driven heater elements. The 25 I/O and integrated LCD remove the external driver IC and a GPIO expander; firmware occupies 4-5 KB of the available 7 KB Flash.
Recommandé
Handheld Thermometers and Medical Diagnostic Devices
Portable infrared thermometers, glucometers, and pulse oximeters favor the PIC16F1934T-I/ML because the XLP sleep current lets the device idle on a coin-cell battery for years between uses. The 10-bit ADC reads the sensor front-end directly; the integrated LCD displays temperature or glucose readings on a custom 4-digit-7-segment glass without a driver IC. The 1.8 V minimum VDD eliminates the boost converter needed by 3.3 V-only competitors, saving ~50 mm^2 of PCB area.
Recommandé
IoT Sensor Nodes with Segmented LCD Status Display
Wireless sensor nodes (Zigbee, LoRa, sub-GHz proprietary) pair the PIC16F1934T-I/ML with a transceiver for sensor readout and a segmented LCD for local status. The 1 uA XLP sleep mode lets a 2400 mAh battery run for 5+ years between replacements, and the 32 MHz CPU wakes fast enough to update the LCD between transmissions. The MSSP module supports SPI to most modern LoRa transceivers, and 256 B RAM is sufficient for packet buffering and ADC averaging. Compared to a Cortex-M0+ alternative, total BOM cost drops by ~$0.40 per node.
Recommandé
HVAC Thermostats and Climate-Control User Interfaces
Residential and commercial HVAC thermostats benefit from the PIC16F1934T-I/ML's integrated LCD for displaying temperature, setpoint, and mode, plus its 32 MHz throughput for PID loops controlling relays, TRIAC outputs, or 0-10 V damper actuators. The 14 ADC channels support external thermistor inputs (supply, return, outdoor, indoor), and the 25 I/O drive LED indicators, pushbuttons, and a rotary encoder without an I/O expander. The QFN-44 footprint suits wall-mount designs where PCB area is constrained.
Recommandé
Automotive Interior Trim Modules (Cluster / Switch Panels)
Body-electronics modules such as window switches, seat-position displays, and interior cluster trim use the PIC16F1934T-I/ML at 12 V battery voltage (regulated down to 5 V by an external LDO) to drive segmented LCD indicators and read multiple digital/analog switch inputs. The wide temperature grade (industrial -40 C to +85 C) covers cabin-environment modules. For under-hood applications requiring AEC-Q100, the Q1-suffixed variant of PIC16F1934 or the PIC16F1938-QML is preferred instead.
Recommandé
White-Goods Display Modules (Refrigerator / Dishwasher Front Panels)
Front-panel control boards for refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens integrate the PIC16F1934T-I/ML with a 96-segment LCD, capacitive touch buttons, and TRIAC outputs to drive compressor, heater, and water valve loads. The EUSART connects to a main control board for inter-MCU communication, and the integrated LCD reduces display BOM by ~$1.00 vs an HT1621-type external driver. Industrial-grade temperature support matches the appliance environment without additional screening.

Principaux différenciateurs
- Integrated LCD driver eliminates external driver IC (vs PIC16F18877-I/PT)
- nanoWatt XLP technology delivers <1 uA sleep current (vs PIC16F1933-I/SP)
- 44-QFN with 25 I/O supports compact designs without I/O expander (vs PIC16F1938-I/ML)
Notes de conception
The 44-QFN package has an exposed thermal pad (pin EP) that MUST be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour on the top layer with at least 8 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.6 mm pitch) for thermal dissipation and ground reference. Without proper EP soldering, junction temperature can exceed the 150 C limit during sustained 32 MHz operation, especially when the LCD charge pump is enabled. Per Microchip application note AN2078, the EP should NOT be left floating.
Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic capacitor on the LCDCAP pin to GND, within 2 mm of the package, to stabilize the LCD charge pump. Decouple VDD with 100 nF plus 1 uF ceramics close to the pins, and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor if the LCD driver simultaneously drives >64 segments. The nanoWatt XLP sleep current stays below 1 uA only when the ADC, LCD charge pump, and peripheral clocks are disabled via PMD/PIE registers.
Do not confuse PIC16F1934 (1.8-5.5 V) with PIC16LF1934 (1.8-3.6 V). The F variant (this part) accepts 5 V on its I/O, the LF variant does not. Also note the pinout difference between 44-QFN (this part, no I/O on pin RF5/RF6/RF7 in some variants) and 44-TQFP - the LF1934 datasheet errata clarifies RF-pin availability. Programming requires ICSP on RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT; do not reuse these pins for LCD segments without disabling ICD.
Keep the LCD segment traces short and routed together to minimize crosstalk between adjacent segments, which can cause ghosting on the glass display. Route the charge-pump capacitor traces first with a ground guard ring around LCDCAP. Use a star-ground topology with VSS pins 8/17/29 all connected to a single low-impedance ground plane. For best EMI performance, place an LC pi-filter (10 uH + 100 nF + 100 nF) on the VDD supply if the MCU is co-located with a switching converter.
