PIC18F46J13T-I/ML Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program and data memory, peripherals, and I/O. The PIC18 family uses a RISC-based 8-bit Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, and the 'J' sub-family (PIC18J) specifically targets high-memory-density, low-pin-count, low-voltage applications. The PIC18F46J13 belongs to the broader PIC18 family -> 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded computing hierarchy, sharing architectural compatibility with PIC18F2x/4x/5x J-series devices.
Key features include deep-sleep current in the nanoamp range, multiple low-power modes (idle, doze, sleep, deep sleep), a 10-bit or 12-bit ADC with auto-acquisition, three 16-bit timers, two comparators, hardware RTCC, and a charge time measurement unit (CTMU) for capacitive touch sensing. It supports I2C, SPI, and UART/EUSART serial interfaces for communication with external peripherals and sensors. The PIC18J-series operates from 2.0V to 3.6V core Vdd (with 5V-tolerant I/O), making it suitable for battery-powered designs.
Typical applications include low-cost graphical LCD interfaces, real-time control with capacitive touch, USB device/host/OTG peripherals (on USB-equipped J-series siblings), industrial control panels, sensor hubs, and consumer electronics requiring long battery life. The 64KB flash and 3.8KB RAM comfortably host protocol stacks and small RTOS kernels while leaving headroom for application code.
When designing with the PIC18F46J13T-I/ML, observe that the 44-QFN exposed pad must be soldered to the ground plane for thermal dissipation and electrical performance. Configure the internal PLL for 48MHz operation, and select the deep-sleep mode for battery-critical standby. The T-suffix part suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging.

Applications typiques
PIC18F46J13T-I/ML convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Sensor Hub with Graphical LCD, Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node, Capacitive Touch Control Panel, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety), USB-Enabled Consumer Peripheral (J50 Migration Path), Home Appliance Control Board.
Industrial Sensor Hub with Graphical LCD
The PIC18F46J13T-I/ML's 64KB flash and 3.8KB RAM are well-matched to mid-range industrial sensor interfaces driving a graphical LCD. Its 12-bit ADC with up to 13 input channels can digitize multiple analog sensors (temperature, pressure, flow) simultaneously at sample rates up to 100 ksps. The 48MHz CPU clock drives a software UART-to-LCD bridge while leaving headroom for I2C sensor polling. Its 2.0V-3.6V Vdd range tolerates noisy 24V industrial bus rails stepped down by a wide-input LDO, and XLP deep-sleep mode drops quiescent current to nanoamps during standby, extending battery life on wireless HMI panels.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node
With XLP deep-sleep current in the nanoamp range and 2.0V-3.6V Vdd, the PIC18F46J13T-I/ML is ideal for battery-powered wireless sensor nodes running on 2x AA alkaline or a single Li-Ion cell. The CTMU peripheral enables capacitive-touch wake-up directly from sleep mode, allowing a tamper-proof user interface that consumes negligible standby power. The internal 31 kHz-48 MHz oscillator eliminates an external crystal, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. 64KB of flash hosts a 6LoWPAN or sub-GHz RF protocol stack while 3.8KB of RAM buffers sensor telemetry before burst transmission.
Recommandé
Capacitive Touch Control Panel
The PIC18F46J13T-I/ML's CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) peripheral implements robust capacitive-touch sensing with sub-pF resolution, supporting up to 13 touch electrodes through the ADC mux. The 48MHz CPU delivers fast-scan response times (<10 ms) for 8-12 button panels or slider gestures. The 12-bit ADC doubles as both touch measurement and general-purpose analog input, eliminating a dedicated touch controller. The 44-QFN package has sufficient GPIO (34 I/O pins) to drive status LEDs and a small TFT, and XLP deep sleep keeps idle power consumption below 1 uA for mains-powered or battery-equipped control panels.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)
Operating from 2.0V-3.6V with 5V-tolerant I/O and an industrial -40C to +85C temperature range, the PIC18F46J13T-I/ML fits non-safety automotive body modules such as HVAC door control, lighting controllers, and seat-adjustment switches. While it does not carry AEC-Q100 qualification, Microchip's automotive PIC18F equivalents are available in the same QFN package. The 12-bit ADC reads potentiometric position sensors with 1 mV resolution, and the dual comparators detect over-current or stall conditions on brushed DC motor loads. The internal oscillator eliminates external crystal that could fail under sustained vibration.
Recommandé
USB-Enabled Consumer Peripheral (J50 Migration Path)
Although the PIC18F46J13 lacks USB, the J13 silicon is pin-to-pin compatible with the PIC18F46J50 in the same 44-QFN package, giving firmware engineers a clear migration path from a basic non-USB interface to a full-speed USB 2.0 device. 64KB of flash and 3.8KB of RAM support USB device class firmware stacks (HID, CDC, MSD) with the J50. The 48MHz CPU clock generates the 48 MHz USB clock directly without an external crystal when properly configured, simplifying the BOM for USB mice, keyboards, and HID game controllers targeting low-cost retail.
Recommandé
Home Appliance Control Board
White-goods home appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and microwave ovens benefit from the PIC18F46J13T-I/ML's balance of cost, peripherals, and power management. The 12-bit ADC monitors motor current and temperature, the comparators handle zero-cross detection for triac-driven AC loads, and the RTCC keeps real-time clock accuracy for delay-start cycles. The 44-QFN's small 8x8 mm footprint fits tight control-board enclosures, and the 3.8KB of RAM supports user-interface string tables for multilingual LCD menus without external memory. Operating temperature up to +85C suits behind-the-dryer-vent mounting with adequate clearance.

Notes de conception
The 44-QFN package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) at the center of the bottom that must be soldered to a copper ground pour for thermal dissipation. Without proper soldering, junction temperature can exceed the +125C absolute maximum under sustained 48MHz operation. Recommend at least 50 mm^2 of copper pour connected via 4 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill) to the inner ground plane to keep theta_JA below 30 C/W.
Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to every VDD pin (pins 18 and 31), plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum polymer capacitor on the main VDD rail. The two VDD pins should be tied together on the PCB. For battery applications, the XLP deep-sleep mode drops quiescent current to <100 nA but the MCU core logic must be fully clocked down via the OSCCON register to enter this state.
The QFN package does not have gull-wing leads - the only electrical connection is through the perimeter pads and the central EP. Use a reflow profile with peak temperature 250C and a 60-90 second time above 220C. Hand-soldering is NOT recommended for production; assembly must use stencil-printed solder paste with a 0.1 mm-0.15 mm thickness.
Do not confuse PIC18F46J13 (no USB) with PIC18F46J50 (with USB). The two parts share the same package and memory architecture, but their SFR (Special Function Register) maps differ in the USB peripheral region. Firmware developed for the J13 will NOT boot on a J50 without USB register initialization. Always verify the silicon Device ID (DEVID) registers before attempting field-upgrade firmware across families.
