PIC32MK0512GPD064-I/MR Présentation
Background. The PIC32MK series is Microchip's high-end 32-bit microcontroller family based on the MIPS32 microAptiv core architecture. PIC32MK devices combine DSP-class arithmetic, FPU, 120 MHz operation, motor-control PWMs, op amps, DACs and ADCs in a single chip. The architecture belongs to the broader PIC32 family which, in turn, sits inside Microchip's MCU product line alongside PIC24 and dsPIC. Within a system, the MCU is the central processing and control element that executes firmware, drives peripherals and interfaces to sensors and actuators.
Key features of this part include 512 KB Flash, 128 KB SRAM, 4 KB EEPROM, operation from 2.2 V to 3.6 V, multiple UART/SPI/I2C interfaces, USB, motor-control PWMs, integrated op-amps and 12-bit ADCs. The 64-QFN package reduces board area versus 64-pin TQFP while providing an exposed pad for thermal dissipation.
From a technical perspective, the MIPS32 microAptiv core delivers 1.56 DMIPS/MHz and supports DSP extensions. The integrated analog front-end (op-amps, comparators and 12-bit ADC) enables direct current-sensor interfacing without external analog ICs, while dedicated motor-control PWMs support field-oriented control of three-phase BLDC and PMSM motors.
Typical applications include industrial motor drives (BLDC, PMSM, ACIM), factory automation controllers, PLC modules, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) edge nodes, multi-channel sensor hubs and general-purpose 32-bit embedded control. Industrial-grade temperature range (-40C to +85C) supports deployment in unenclosed factory environments.
When designing with this part, plan a 4-layer PCB with a continuous thermal pad under the QFN exposed pad to dissipate the 120 MHz core dissipation; verify all analog inputs use the integrated op-amp buffers rather than direct ADC pinouts when source impedance is high.

Principaux différenciateurs
- Industrial-grade temperature range at full 120 MHz speed (vs PIC32MK0512GPD064-E/MR)
- Integrated analog front-end (op-amps, comparators, 12-bit ADC) (vs PIC32MK0256GPG064T-E/PT)
- Same 64-QFN footprint as higher-memory PIC32MK variants (vs PIC32MK0512GPK064)
Notes de conception
The 64-QFN package requires a continuous copper pour under the exposed thermal pad (pin 64) that is connected to ground through multiple thermal vias (typically 9 vias in a 3x3 array). Without proper thermal pad soldering, junction temperature can exceed the 125C maximum, especially when the core runs continuously at 120 MHz. Place at least one 100 nF decoupling capacitor adjacent to each VDD pin and a single 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on the main supply rail.
Do not exceed 3.6 V on any VDD pin - even brief transients above this level will damage the MCU. Add a TVS diode or Schottky clamp on the 3.3 V rail if the upstream supply is inductive. The MCLR reset pin (pin 63) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; do not leave it floating. When using the internal op-amps for motor phase current sensing, ensure the shunt resistors are Kelvin-connected to avoid ground-loop errors that corrupt the ADC readings.
Estimated: At 120 MHz with peripherals active, core current consumption is approximately 50 mA at 3.3 V. With VDD = 3.3 V and total power 0.165 W, and QFN theta_JA of approximately 30 C/W on a 4-layer PCB with thermal pad, junction temperature rise is approximately 5 C above ambient - well within the 125 C maximum. Industrial designers should still derate by 20 C for 10-year lifetime reliability. Reduce peripheral clock tree usage if higher temperatures are expected.
