Notes de conception

Route USB DP/DM as a 90-ohm differential pair with controlled impedance. Place the 15K pull-down resistor on D- (DM) within 5mm of the connector for USB device mode. Place a 100nF decoupling capacitor within 5mm of each VDD pin. Use a 4-layer PCB stack-up with dedicated ground plane for USB signal integrity. Add ESD protection (USBLC6-2SC6 or equivalent) on DP/DM lines if the USB connector is exposed. According to the Microchip datasheet, the USB internal pull-up on D+ must be enabled through the U1OTGCON register after enumeration.

Decoupling and Power Supply

Use 100nF ceramic decoupling on each VDD pin and a single 10uF bulk capacitor near the MCU. The internal 1.8V voltage regulator generates core logic supply; do not connect external 1.8V supply. Place a ferrite bead or LC filter between AVDD and VDD if analog reference accuracy is critical for ADC measurements. The MCU draws 0.5 mA/MHz active current, so at 40 MHz full operation expect 20 mA active current. For sleep modes, current drops to single-digit uA.

Always program the configuration bits (CONFIG1, CONFIG2, etc.) for proper oscillator selection, watchdog timer, and code protection BEFORE debugging. Failure to set the FNOSC bits will result in undefined clock source. MCLR must be pulled high through a 10K resistor for normal operation; do not leave floating. The ADC requires a minimum sampling time of 132 ns at 40 MHz. According to the datasheet, JTAGEN bit must be cleared to release RB7-RB10 as GPIO when JTAG is unused.

Place the MCU at the center of the PCB with shortest trace lengths to decoupling caps. Use wide ground traces or ground pour to minimize ground impedance. Analog input traces (AIOC1-AIOC12) should be routed away from digital switching signals to minimize ADC noise coupling. The PMP bus traces should be matched in length to avoid display timing skew. Pin 1 is identified by the dot on the TQFP package; orient the chip with pin 1 at top-left for standard placement.
