PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG is a 32-bit MIPS M4K microcontroller operating at up to 80 MHz with 64 KB of Flash program memory and 32 KB of RAM, housed in a 121-ball TFBGA (10x10 mm) package. It is part of the PIC32MX5/6/7 family that integrates a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet MAC, USB 2.0 Full-Speed On-The-Go, four DMA channels, and a 16-bit parallel master port alongside 53 general-purpose I/O pins, making it one of the highest-integration 32-bit PIC microcontrollers in the legacy MX5/6/7 generation.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (RAM), and configurable peripherals onto one die, forming the smallest addressable computing unit in an embedded system. The PIC32MX family sits in Microchip's mid-range 32-bit MCU portfolio, slotting above the PIC24/dsPIC families and below the Cortex-M-class PIC32MZ/MK families in performance and price. Within this taxonomy, the PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG belongs to the "MX664" sub-line that specifically targets connected-embedded applications requiring both USB device/host and Ethernet connectivity on the same silicon.

Key features of this device include a 32-bit MIPS M4K core with single-cycle multiply and hardware divide, 64 KB single-voltage Flash, 32 KB SRAM, 53 GPIO, four DMA channels, two I2C, two SPI, two UART, USB 2.0 Full-Speed OTG, 10/100 Ethernet MAC (requires external PHY), 16-channel 10-bit ADC, five 16-bit timers/counters, real-time clock, and a 16-bit parallel master port. The operating voltage range is 2.3 V to 3.6 V, and the industrial temperature range of -40 C to +85 C (denoted by the "I" suffix) covers harsh embedded environments.

The PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG utilizes the MIPS M4K core architecture with separate 32-bit instruction and data paths, a 5-stage pipeline, and a hardware multiply/divide unit that delivers 1.56 DMIPS/MHz. The 121-ball TFBGA package (BG suffix) supports the highest pin-count option in this family, exposing all peripherals and the full 53 GPIO without pin reuse conflicts, and is targeted at space-constrained surface-mount designs.

Typical applications include industrial Ethernet gateways, USB-to-UART bridges, home-automation controllers, embedded web servers, networked sensor hubs, point-of-sale terminals, and connected medical devices. The combination of integrated Ethernet MAC and USB OTG on one device is uncommon in this price tier and makes the part especially attractive for low-cost IoT edge nodes.

When designing with this part, allocate adequate PCB area for the BGA breakout, ensure proper decoupling (one 0.1 uF per power pin is recommended), and verify that the selected external Ethernet PHY is RMII/MII-compatible with the MX5/6/7 MAC interface. For users migrating from PIC24 or earlier PIC32MX3/4 devices, the peripheral library in MPLAB Harmony provides drop-in driver compatibility.

Applications typiques

PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Ethernet Gateway, USB Device/Host Bridge, Connected Home-Automation Controller, Embedded Web Server / HMI, Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminal, Networked Sensor Hub.

🏭

Industrial Ethernet Gateway

The PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG is purpose-built for low-cost industrial Ethernet gateways because it integrates a 10/100 Ethernet MAC, USB OTG, and 53 GPIO on a single die. In a typical Modbus TCP-to-RTU gateway, the device runs the Microchip MLA TCP/IP stack on the M4K core at 80 MHz while the four DMA channels offload packet memory moves. The 121-TFBGA package keeps the design compact, while the -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature range tolerates factory-floor environments. Engineers pair the MCU with a KSZ8041 PHY and an isolated RJ-45 transformer module; the 32 KB RAM accommodates 8-16 simultaneous TCP sockets for sub-device polling without external memory.

🔌

USB Device/Host Bridge

The integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed OTG controller on PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG makes it well suited for USB-to-UART, USB-to-SPI, or USB-to-I2C bridges. The 80 MHz MIPS M4K core handles USB protocol plus data forwarding at full-speed (12 Mbit/s) without taxing CPU cycles. The 53 GPIO accommodates auxiliary status LEDs, configuration straps, and external buffer enables. Compared to a discrete USB controller + MCU two-chip solution, this single-chip approach reduces BOM cost by roughly 30% and shrinks PCB area by 50%. Designers should add a 24 MHz crystal for USB clock accuracy and ESD protection diodes on D+/D- lines for field-deployable products.

🧩

Connected Home-Automation Controller

For home-automation hubs that bridge Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB peripherals, the PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG offers a balanced feature set: the Ethernet MAC connects to the home router, USB OTG supports an external Wi-Fi module (e.g., RN171) or a GSM dongle for cellular failover, and 53 GPIO drives relays, sensors, and keypad inputs. The 64 KB Flash hosts a custom automation state machine plus Microchip's Wi-Fi/TCP stacks. Power consumption is modest at 80 MHz, fitting always-on applications. Designers should use the 10-bit ADC for analog sensor reads (temperature, light) and reserve one I2C bus for an EEPROM storing configuration and scheduling data.

🖥️

Embedded Web Server / HMI

The 32-bit MIPS core at 80 MHz with 32 KB RAM runs an HTTP server with embedded HTML pages, REST APIs, or a tiny CGI engine for remote equipment management. The Ethernet MAC delivers reliable 10/100 connectivity while the 16-bit parallel master port (PMP) interfaces directly to character LCDs or graphic OLEDs for local HMI. With 53 GPIO available, designers can drive keypads, LEDs, and rotary encoders without external I/O expanders. The PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG typically achieves 10-15 simultaneous HTTP sessions at full CPU utilization, making it suitable for light-duty equipment dashboards, but heavier stacks would require an MX7 or MX8 device.

💳

Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminal

The PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG fits compact POS peripherals (card readers, NFC bridges, thermal printer controllers) where USB OTG communicates with a host tablet and Ethernet provides backend reporting. Its 10-bit ADC reads keypad or battery voltage while four DMA channels manage continuous barcode-scanner UART streaming without CPU intervention. The 121-TFBGA keeps the PCB small enough for handheld form factors, and the industrial temperature range supports deployment in semi-outdoor retail environments. A typical implementation uses 32 KB of the 64 KB Flash for the application and the remainder for a fail-safe bootloader supporting in-field firmware updates over USB or Ethernet.

📡

Networked Sensor Hub

For IoT edge sensor hubs aggregating analog and digital signals and pushing summaries to a cloud gateway via Ethernet, the PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG provides the right mix: 16-channel 10-bit ADC captures analog sensors, two I2C buses connect digital sensors, and the Ethernet MAC uploads pre-processed data. The four DMA channels enable simultaneous ADC scanning and SPI sensor reads without CPU involvement, freeing the M4K core for filtering and aggregation algorithms. With 32 KB RAM, the device can buffer up to 4 KB of time-series data before transmitting, smoothing out network jitter. Compared to 8-bit MCU hubs, the 32-bit performance reduces latency by 3-5x and supports on-board TLS.

Notes de conception

The 121-ball TFBGA package has a 0.8 mm ball pitch, which requires 4-layer PCB with microvia-in-pad or HDI stack-up for reliable assembly. Place at least one 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor per VDD/VSS pair as close to the balls as the breakout allows. Add a 10 uF bulk tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the package. The BG package has no exposed thermal pad; thermal dissipation is through the balls to internal planes. For designs above 500 mW, route a copper flood under the BGA and stitch with thermal vias to the inner ground plane.

Use a low-noise 3.3 V LDO such as the MCP1700-3302E for the MCU core supply. The PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG draws approximately 70 mA active at 80 MHz with all peripherals on, plus 10-15 mA peak for USB and Ethernet MAC transmit bursts. A 3.3 V rail rated at 200 mA with 50 mV peak-to-peak ripple is sufficient. Add a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on the 3.3 V rail close to the MCU. For USB applications, the VUSB pin requires its own 0.47 uF decoupling capacitor and may be powered from the USB cable or tied to VDD per application requirement.

Do not assume any TFBGA ball labeled NC is truly disconnected - some balls marked NC on early datasheet revisions were repurposed in later silicon revisions. Always re-verify against the latest datasheet. A common mistake is using a 25 MHz crystal for USB applications; the PIC32MX664F064LT-I/BG requires a 24 MHz crystal when USB is enabled because the USB clock divider must produce exactly 48 MHz. Also, when migrating from the PIC32MX3/4 family, the Ethernet MAC register definitions changed - do not blindly reuse code.

Keep the 24 MHz crystal traces short and symmetric, with the load capacitors (typically 18-22 pF) placed within 3 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 balls. For Ethernet, route the RMII or MII differential pairs (TX+/TX-, RX+/RX-) with 100 ohm differential impedance and length matching within 2 mm. Place the PHY close to the RJ-45 connector and place common-mode chokes on the MII signals. Keep the 50 MHz RMII reference clock trace short and routed away from switching power or USB data lines to avoid coupling noise into the Ethernet receiver.
