SS0530 Présentation
A Schottky barrier diode is a unipolar semiconductor device formed by a metal-semiconductor junction rather than the PN junction used in conventional signal diodes. This construction eliminates the minority-carrier storage charge, which gives Schottky diodes a much faster reverse-recovery time (typically sub-nanosecond) and a lower forward voltage drop (Vf) at a given current than a silicon rectifier of equivalent die size. The trade-off is a higher reverse leakage current and a lower peak reverse-voltage rating than PN-junction rectifiers - so Schottky parts are used at 5V, 12V, 24V, and 48V rails rather than the 200V+ mains range.
Key features of the SS0530 include very low forward voltage drop, fast reverse recovery, a guard ring construction for transient protection, and an SOD-123 outline that is interchangeable with the industry-standard B5817W / B5819W / SK12 / SS14 footprints used by Vishay, onsemi, Diodes Inc., and others. The part is fully RoHS compliant and is built with a Pb-free matte-tin finish suitable for lead-free reflow profiles up to 260C peak.
The SS0530 is positioned as a low-Vf, 0.5A Schottky diode in the SS0520-SS0540 family. The die uses a guard-ring structure to improve transient energy capability and long-term reliability under repetitive surge conditions such as those seen at the output of a switching converter or inside a USB / Bluetooth or DC motor drive rail.
Typical applications include low-voltage DC-DC converters as the synchronous-rectifier or OR-ing diode, free-wheeling diode across relay coils and solenoids, reverse-polarity polarity protection on USB ports and battery packs, and signal clamping in low-frequency audio and instrumentation. Panjit recommends it for switching power supplies, mobile devices, and computer peripherals where 0.5A and 30V are within the design envelope.
When designing with the SS0530, observe the maximum forward current derating above 25C (typically 2.5 mA/C for SOD-123) and ensure that the reverse voltage never exceeds 30V, including any inductive transient overshoot. A small series resistor or RC snubber is recommended across inductive loads to keep the device inside its Safe Operating Area.

Applications typiques
SS0530 convient pour 7 applications: Low-Voltage DC-DC Converter Rectifier, Reverse Polarity / Battery Protection, Relay / Solenoid Flyback Diode, USB and Mobile Device Power Routing, Signal Clamping and Logic-Level Protection, Switching Power Supply Snubber, Test & Measurement Front-End.
Low-Voltage DC-DC Converter Rectifier
The SS0530's 30V VRRM, 0.5A IF(AV), and very low forward voltage drop make it well suited as a low-side rectifier or OR-ing diode on the output of a 3.3V/5V/12V buck or boost converter. Placed between the synchronous-rect MOSFET drain and the output capacitor, the SS0530 carries load current during the switch off-time and protects against reverse current flow when the input bus is hot-swapped. Its 5.0A IFSM rating absorbs the inrush transient at converter startup, while the SOD-123 footprint keeps the part compatible with high-density POL designs used in networking, server, and computing applications.
Recommandé
Reverse Polarity / Battery Protection
For USB ports, single-cell Li-ion packs, and 12V lead-acid accessories, the SS0530 placed in series with the positive rail blocks reverse-bias current if a user installs the battery backwards. Its 30V reverse rating covers 12V and 24V lead-acid rails with comfortable margin, while the 0.5A continuous rating suits low-power chargers and IoT devices. The very low Vf (typically below 0.4V at 0.5A per the SS05xx family datasheet curve) keeps the loss under 200mW at full load, eliminating the need for a heat sink. Use a fuse or PTC upstream for short-circuit protection.
Recommandé
Relay / Solenoid Flyback Diode
Across small DC relays and solenoids operating below 30V, the SS0530 clamps the inductive kick to -Vf when the coil is de-energized, protecting the driving transistor or MOSFET from avalanche breakdown. Its 5.0A non-repetitive surge current (IFSM) comfortably handles the L*di/dt transient of relays up to several hundred millihenries. Choose SS0530 when the coil current stays below 0.5A continuous and the supply rail is below 30V - common in industrial control, building automation, and automotive accessory modules. For higher-current or higher-voltage coils, step up to SS0540 (40V) or a larger SMA-package rectifier.
Recommandé
USB and Mobile Device Power Routing
Inside USB-A/C ports, OTG supplies, and 5V accessory rails, the SS0530 functions as a low-loss OR-ing diode when a device is powered from either a wall adapter or a battery. The diode's low Vf (versus a silicon 1N4148) reduces voltage drop and dissipation, improving run-time on portable equipment. The 0.5A rating matches USB 2.0 standard downstream port current (500 mA), and the SOD-123 outline fits the dense layouts of smartphones, wearables, and tablet charging paths. The Pb-free matte-tin finish supports lead-free reflow at 260C peak per JEDEC J-STD-020.
Recommandé
Signal Clamping and Logic-Level Protection
At logic-level signal lines below 30V, the SS0530 can be used to clamp negative-going transients and ESD events below the reverse breakdown of sensitive GPIO pins. The Schottky's very low capacitance (typically a few pF at zero bias) preserves high-speed signal integrity on I2C, SPI, or low-speed data lines, while the 30V reverse rating easily handles the maximum voltage of 24V industrial buses. This protection pattern is common in PLCs, sensor interfaces, and consumer audio jacks where moderate over-voltage events are expected.
Recommandé
Switching Power Supply Snubber
In small flyback, buck-boost, and isolated DC-DC converters, the SS0530 can be placed across the primary-side switch or as part of an RCD snubber to limit voltage overshoot when the MOSFET turns off. Its fast switching speed (Schottky reverse recovery in the sub-nanosecond range) avoids adding switching losses, and the 30V/0.5A ratings fit sub-30W adapters and auxiliary supplies. The SOD-123 package allows the snubber network to be tucked next to the transformer or MOSFET without occupying significant board area.
Recommandé
Test & Measurement Front-End
In bench multimeters, data-acquisition front-ends, and laboratory instrumentation, the SS0530 serves as a low-leakage clamping or input-protection diode on the analog signal path. Its low reverse leakage (per SS05xx family typical curves) preserves measurement accuracy on low-current ranges, and the 30V rating protects downstream ADC input pins from over-voltage conditions in the field. The small SOD-123 package is preferred for hand-held and portable instruments where PCB real estate is at a premium.

Notes de conception
The SS0530 is rated 0.5A continuous forward current, but this rating assumes the SOD-123 case is held at or below 25C. Above 25C, derate the current linearly using the package thermal resistance (RθJA typically 200-250 C/W for SOD-123 on a 1 oz 1-layer test board per JEDEC). Estimated: at 0.5A and Vf=0.45V the steady-state dissipation is 0.225W, which on a 200 C/W board yields a 45C junction increase above ambient - acceptable for most designs but verify against your board copper area. Provide at least 50 mm² of copper land pad on both anode and cathode for sustained 0.5A operation.
Do not use the SS0530 above 30V reverse voltage, including transient overshoot. Inductive loads (relays, solenoids, motors) can produce back-EMF spikes well beyond the supply rail; add a free-wheeling diode, TVS, or RC snubber to clamp transients. A common mistake is to install an SS0530 across a 24V relay coil and assume it is safe - it is, while transients during contact arcing can still exceed 30V if not snubbed. Always measure V_R with a scope during worst-case turn-off.
Solder the SS0530's SOD-123 land pattern with the cathode pad on the polarity-bar side per the datasheet marking diagram. Use a footprint with a minimum pad size of 0.7 mm x 1.0 mm and a thermal land (anode and cathode copper pour) of 30-50 mm² per terminal. Keep the diode close to the source of the transient (relay coil, MOSFET drain) to minimize the loop area and the resulting L*di/dt overshoot - this is especially important for free-wheeling and snubber applications where lead inductance can negate the diode's protection.
At full rated 0.5A with Vf=0.45V (typical per SS05xx family curve), the SS0530 dissipates approximately 0.225W of heat. Estimated: on a 1-oz copper JEDEC test board the junction-to-ambient rise is about 45C. If your design operates the diode continuously at 0.5A above 75C ambient, derate the current or add a copper-pour heat spreader. For higher-current applications, step up to a SS0540 (same package, 40V) in parallel with a second SS0530 to share current and reduce per-device dissipation.
