STM32F103C8T7 Présentation

The STMicroelectronics STM32F103C8T7 is a medium-density performance-line ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller operating at 72 MHz with 64 KB of Flash and 20 KB of SRAM, housed in a 48-pin LQFP (7x7 mm) package. It integrates USB 2.0 Full-Speed, CAN 2.0B, seven 16-bit timers, two 12-bit ADCs (up to 1 MSPS), and nine communication interfaces (I2C, SPI, USART, USB, CAN) on a single die, delivering 90 DMIPS at 1.25 DMIPS/MHz.

An ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller is a 32-bit RISC processor core designed for deterministic real-time embedded control, sitting within a broader taxonomy of MCU -> embedded processor -> microcontroller -> semiconductor. Cortex-M3 cores specifically target low-latency interrupt response (typically 12 clock cycles), Thumb-2 instruction efficiency, and hardware divide in a small footprint, making them the workhorse of industrial motor control, USB peripherals, and consumer device controllers where deterministic behavior matters more than raw clock speed.

Key features include 72 MHz CPU with hardware single-cycle multiply, 64 KB Flash with read-while-write support, 20 KB SRAM, a 12-bit ADC with up to 10 channels, two I2C, two SPI, three USART, one USB Full-Speed, and one CAN 2.0B interface. Operating voltage spans 2.0V to 3.6V with internal 8 MHz and 40 kHz RC oscillators plus a PLL multiplying up to 72 MHz.

The architecture pairs the Cortex-M3 core with a Nested Vectored Interrupt Controller (NVIC) supporting up to 43 maskable interrupts, a DMA controller with seven channels, and a power management block offering Sleep, Stop, and Standby modes. The bus matrix arbitrates between the core, DMA, and peripherals to keep deterministic throughput even when USB or CAN packets arrive.

Typical applications include USB HID peripherals, industrial CAN-bus nodes, motor-control boards, low-cost development platforms (the 'Blue Pill' form factor), and consumer device controllers. The integrated USB PHY and CAN 2.0B controller make it particularly suited for bridging PC and industrial networks without external transceiver logic. Operating temperature spans -40C to +105C for the industrial grade.

When designing with this device, watch the 2.0V minimum VDD during PLL start-up and ensure decoupling comprises a 100 nF X7R per VDD pin plus a bulk 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic. The NRST pin requires an external 10 kohm pull-up and a 100 nF capacitor to VDD for reliable reset.

Applications typiques

STM32F103C8T7 convient pour 6 applications: USB HID / CDC Peripheral Devices, Industrial CAN-Bus Nodes, Brushless DC Motor Control, Low-Cost Development / Maker Platforms, Consumer Device Controllers, Industrial Sensor Aggregators / IoT Gateways.

🧩

USB HID / CDC Peripheral Devices

The STM32F103C8T7's integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed PHY, with seven bidirectional endpoints and 1024-byte dedicated SRAM buffer, makes it ideal for USB HID keyboards, mice, gamepads, and CDC virtual COM port bridges. The USB peripheral operates without an external transceiver, requiring only a 22-ohm series resistor on D+/D- and a 1.5 kohm pull-up on D+ for full-speed enumeration. Combined with the 72 MHz Cortex-M3 running at 90 DMIPS, designers can implement HID polling at 1 kHz with software overhead headroom for LED matrices or sensor fusion. ST's USB Device Library covers HID, CDC, MSC, and DFU classes without external licensing. Power draw on the USB rail with all peripherals idle is roughly 30 mA, well within USB 2.0 budget.

🏭

Industrial CAN-Bus Nodes

The STM32F103C8T7's bxCAN (Basic Extended CAN 2.0B) controller with hardware message RAM, identifier filtering, and bit timing up to 1 Mbit/s is purpose-built for industrial CAN-bus nodes such as sensor aggregators, motor drives, and PLC I/O modules. The bxCAN peripheral handles both 11-bit and 29-bit identifiers and dual receive FIFOs, offloading bus arbitration from the core. Pairing the MCU with an external TJA1050 or SN65HVD230 transceiver provides the physical bus interface. Operating from 2.0V to 3.6V with industrial -40C to +105C grading, the part is rated for factory-floor installations. Together with the seven 16-bit timers for PWM motor control, engineers can build full sensor-and-actuator nodes in one chip.

🤖

Brushless DC Motor Control

The STM32F103C8T7's seven 16-bit timers including advanced-control PWM timers (TIM1) with complementary outputs and dead-time insertion make it a strong fit for brushless DC, PMSM, and stepper motor drives at modest power. Each advanced timer offers 6 PWM channels with hardware break inputs and encoder-mode support, sufficient to drive six-step or sinusoidal commutation up to tens of kHz switching frequency. The 12-bit ADC at 1 MSPS is fast enough for back-EMF sensing and current shunt feedback within a single PWM cycle. ST's STM32 Motor Control SDK targets this exact MCU for sensorless FOC of small BLDC pumps, fans, and e-bike hubs. The LQFP-48 footprint keeps board size small for compact drive enclosures.

🧩

Low-Cost Development / Maker Platforms

The STM32F103C8T7 is the canonical MCU on the popular 'Blue Pill' STM32 development board, prized for its sub-$2 price, exposed SWD pins, and 64 KB Flash sufficient for Arduino-style sketches via STM32duino core. Hobbyists use it for robotics controllers, LED matrices, IoT edge nodes with USB programming, and DIY oscilloscope/logic-analyzer projects. The part exposes all major peripherals on breakout pins (PA0-PA15, PB0-PB15), and the on-chip USB PHY eliminates an external FTDI chip needed on older boards. With -40C to +105C rating, the board is also a learning vehicle for industrial-temperature design. Many firmware ports of Arduino libraries target this chip explicitly.

📱

Consumer Device Controllers

The STM32F103C8T7's 72 MHz Cortex-M3 plus 20 KB SRAM can comfortably run USB stacks, BLE-via-UART bridge code, simple UI loops, and motor control on a single die, making it a fit for consumer appliances like robotic vacuums, smart kitchen devices, and remote controls. The integrated USB and CAN interfaces let the same firmware drive PC connectivity and an internal CAN sensor bus without external peripherals. The 2.0V-3.6V range supports single-cell Li-ion (via boost) or 3.3V regulated rails common in consumer designs. Combined with the 105C temperature grade, it can be placed near heat-generating power stages in enclosed appliances. Sleep and Stop modes drop quiescent current below 20 uA for battery-powered accessories.

🌐

Industrial Sensor Aggregators / IoT Gateways

The STM32F103C8T7's nine communication interfaces (3x USART, 2x I2C, 2x SPI, USB, CAN) make it ideal as a sensor aggregator or simple IoT gateway combining industrial fieldbus (CAN, RS-485 via USART) with USB or SPI links to wireless modules. The two 12-bit ADCs at 1 MSPS are adequate for analog sensor digitization, and the DMA controller with seven channels can stream data without CPU load. The part is widely deployed in industrial nodes monitoring temperature, pressure, and flow via I2C sensor chains and forwarding to a host via CAN. The -40C to +105C rating and 64 KB Flash comfortably support protocol translation stacks.

What is the operating voltage of STM32F103C8T7?
The STM32F103C8T7 operates from 2.0V to 3.6V across its full speed range. According to the STMicroelectronics datasheet (Doc ID 13587 Rev 15), a separate internal regulator powers the 1.8V core domain. Designers should hold VDD above 2.0V during PLL lock acquisition or startup may fail; a 100 nF X7R per VDD pin plus a 4.7 uF bulk cap is the standard decoupling scheme.
How much Flash and SRAM does STM32F103C8T7 have?
The STM32F103C8T7 integrates 64 KB of Flash and 20 KB of SRAM. The Flash supports in-application programming and read-while-write, letting one bank run code while the other erases. The 20 KB SRAM is split between main SRAM (up to 19 KB) and a small 1 KB auxiliary block used by some CAN/USB buffers. For larger memory, the pin-compatible STM32F103CBT6 (128 KB Flash) is the same-footprint drop-in upgrade.
Where can I download the STM32F103C8T7 datasheet PDF?

STMicroelectronics also reports REACH compliance and conflict-mineral due diligence for tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold. The 48-LQFP package uses NiPdAu lead plating suitable for lead-free reflow up to 260C peak temperature per IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020.
When should I choose STM32F103C8T7 over STM32F407VG?
The STM32F103C8T7 is the right pick when 72 MHz performance, 64 KB Flash, and CAN/USB are sufficient, especially at low cost and small package size (LQFP-48). The STM32F407VG is overkill at 168 MHz Cortex-M4 with FPU, 1 MB Flash, and many extra peripherals, but becomes appropriate for DSP, Ethernet, or applications needing large RAM. Pick F103 for cost-driven, mid-complexity designs; pick F407 for high-performance signal processing.
What is a GigaDevice equivalent for STM32F103C8T7?
The GigaDevice GD32F103C8T6 is the most common cross-brand equivalent for the STM32F103C8T7, sharing the same 48-LQFP package, pinout, peripheral set, and roughly the same register map. GD32F103 parts run the Cortex-M3 at 108 MHz (vs 72 MHz on STM32), so firmware porting requires rechecking Flash wait-state settings and the PLL multiplier. Mouser, LCSC, and Arrow list GD32F103C8T6 at roughly $0.45-$1.50 per unit, often less than the ST equivalent at volume.

Guide de sélection

Choose the STM32F103C8T7 when you need the 105C industrial temperature option in the LQFP-48 footprint with 64 KB Flash and integrated USB + CAN. Pick the STM32F103C8T6 if your ambient stays below 85C and you want to avoid the small premium for the T7 grade. Move up to the STM32F103CBT6 when 128 KB Flash is needed (same package, no PCB changes). Step over to GD32F103C8T6 when you want extra MHz headroom or shorter lead times, but recheck PLL configuration and Flash wait-states in firmware. For designs lacking USB or CAN, the STM32F030C8T6 at lower cost is a reasonable substitute if the Cortex-M0 core and reduced peripheral set are acceptable.

Notes de conception

Decoupling: place a 100 nF X7R 0603 capacitor on each VDD pin (3 pins total), plus one shared 4.7 uF X5R ceramic at the regulator output. Place the small caps within 3 mm of their respective VDD pins via short wide traces. Add 1 uF + 10 nF on VDDA near the supply pin; do not share VDDA ground returns with digital VSS - star-ground to the regulator ground. Without proper decoupling the ADC readings will show 10-20 LSB noise and the USB packet-retry rate will spike.

BOOT0 strap: BOOT0 must be pulled LOW for normal boot from Flash; leaving it floating or pulling it HIGH drops the part into bootloader or RAM-boot mode. R-C filter (10 kohm + 100 nF) is recommended on NRST to avoid spurious resets during hot-plug of USB or noisy supplies. Also, USB DP pull-up (1.5 kohm to D+) must be driven by software-controlled GPIO (typically PA12), not wired permanently, to comply with USB suspend current limits under 2.5 mA.

Estimated power dissipation: at 72 MHz, 3.3V, all peripherals active, the STM32F103C8T7 draws roughly 50 mA (165 mW). The LQFP-48 has theta_JA around 65 C/W on a 2-layer JEDEC EIA/JESD51-3 test board, giving a junction-rise of about 11C at ambient 25C - well within the 105C maximum. Forcing the part to industrial temperatures near 105C ambient should still be fine; the bottleneck is peripheral I/O leakage, not the CPU die.

Crystal layout: keep the 8 MHz HSE crystal traces under 5 mm and place the load capacitors (typically 20-33 pF) on the same PCB side as the MCU, with a ground guard ring. Avoid routing any digital signal traces under the crystal traces or across the oscillator pins. For USB, route the D+/D- pair as a matched 90-ohm differential, length-matched within 150 mils, and place the 22-ohm series resistors at the MCU end - not at the connector end - to dampen reflections.
