TJA1044T/1Z Présentation

The NXP TJA1044T/1Z is a high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) transceiver from the Mantis family, providing an interface between a CAN protocol controller and the physical two-wire CAN bus in an 8-pin SO (SOIC-8) package. It supports CAN data rates up to 1 Mbit/s and reliable communication in the CAN FD fast phase at data rates up to 5 Mbit/s, and it implements the CAN physical layer defined in ISO 11898-2:2024 third edition and SAE J2284-1 to SAE J2284-5.

A CAN transceiver is the physical-layer device that sits between a microcontroller's CAN protocol controller and the differential CANH/CANL bus wires. It translates the controller's digital transmit (TXD) and receive (RXD) signals into the dominant/recessive differential voltage levels required by the ISO 11898 standard, while providing ESD protection, bus fault tolerance, and common-mode rejection. The TJA1044 belongs to the higher-level hierarchy: CAN transceiver → automotive network interface IC → in-vehicle networking → automotive power management, and is widely used wherever an MCU must communicate over a robust, differential bus.

Key features include very low standby current with wake-up capability, an internal slope-control mechanism that reduces electromagnetic emissions, and excellent EMC performance that allows removal of common-mode chokes. The device provides high ESD robustness on the bus pins (typically ≥8 kV HBM) and is specified over the -40 °C to +150 °C automotive temperature range. A dedicated standby mode reduces quiescent current while still monitoring the bus for wake-up activity, making the TJA1044T/1Z well suited for always-on automotive networks.

The implementation uses NXP's proven BiCMOS process and an advanced differential transmitter with tightly controlled edge symmetry to minimise radiated emissions. Combined with an integrated split-pin concept (the SPLIT output stabilises the recessive common-mode voltage of the bus) and a wide common-mode range for CANH/CANL, the design delivers high ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) margins even on long cable backbones.

Typical applications include high-speed CAN body and chassis networks, powertrain ECUs (where the part operates at -40 °C to +150 °C), CAN nodes for body-control modules (BCMs), gateway nodes between CAN and CAN FD buses, and industrial CAN-FD field-bus nodes in vehicles, trucks, agricultural equipment, and forklifts.

When designing with the TJA1044T/1Z, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VCC pin and follow the bus-layout recommendations in the manufacturer datasheet. A split termination (typically 60 Ω between CANH and CANL plus two 30 Ω resistors to ground through a 4.7 nF capacitor, or referenced to the SPLIT pin) significantly improves EMC behaviour and should not be omitted on long stubs.

This page combines manufacturer-anchored specifications, same-family drop-in alternatives, comparison data and PCB-level design notes that go beyond a single distributor product listing.

Applications typiques

TJA1044T/1Z convient pour 6 applications: Automotive Body and Chassis CAN Bus Nodes, Powertrain ECU Communication (EMS / TCU / ADAS Sensor Bus), In-Vehicle Gateway (CAN ↔ CAN FD Bridge), Industrial CAN-Based Field Bus Nodes, Truck, Bus and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Networks, Battery Management System (BMS) CAN Slave Modules.

🚗

Automotive Body and Chassis CAN Bus Nodes

The TJA1044T/1Z is purpose-built for high-speed CAN in body and chassis networks, where it converts the MCU's TXD/RXD CMOS signals into the ISO 11898-2:2024-compliant differential levels on CANH and CANL. Its compliance with ISO 11898-2 (3rd edition) and SAE J2284-1 to SAE J2284-5 means it interoperates with every other ISO 11898-2-compliant ECU on the bus, while supporting CAN FD fast-phase data rates up to 5 Mbit/s and arbitration phase up to 1 Mbit/s. End-of-line compliance with the OEM's CAN conformance test (e.g. PnO conformance, GMW 3122) is achievable without external bus protection in 12 V systems. Combined with the -40 °C to +150 °C operating range, the TJA1044T/1Z sits comfortably in body-control modules and chassis ECUs that must operate underhood.

🚗

Powertrain ECU Communication (EMS / TCU / ADAS Sensor Bus)

Inside powertrain ECUs such as engine management systems (EMS), transmission control units (TCU) and ADAS radar sensors, the TJA1044T/1Z acts as the bus-side termination and signalling block between the MCU and the in-vehicle CAN bus. Its low standby current (when the bus is idle and the node goes to sleep) keeps quiescent draw low on always-on networks, while the wake-up pattern recognition allows the rest of the ECU to remain powered down. The loop-delay symmetry target on the /3 family variant supports reliable CAN-FD communication in the fast phase, critical for sensor data transport in ADAS networks where latency budgets are tight. Add an external 12 V TVS (e.g., SMBJ24CA-Q1 equivalent) and a 10 nF common-mode filter capacitor to meet OEM load-dump and reverse-polarity specifications.

🌐

In-Vehicle Gateway (CAN ↔ CAN FD Bridge)

A gateway ECU between a classic 500 kbit/s CAN body bus and a 2 Mbit/s CAN-FD powertrain bus uses two TJA1044T/1Z devices per channel: one tied to each bus side of the gateway. The split-pin (SPLIT) feature actively stabilises the recessive common-mode voltage at 2.5 V, which is particularly valuable on long bus backbones with several drop-taps. Combined with internal slope control for low-emission edges, the part removes the need for external common-mode chokes, saving PCB area and BoM cost. ISO 11898-2:2024 third-edition compliance ensures the gateway forwards frames without re-quantisation errors.

🏭

Industrial CAN-Based Field Bus Nodes

Outside the automotive cabin, the TJA1044T/1Z supports industrial CANopen and J1939 field-bus nodes in pumps, motor drives, instrumentation, and agricultural machinery. The -40 °C to +150 °C operating range and ≥8 kV HBM ESD robustness allow deployment in outdoor enclosures, while the wide bus-fault tolerance of -27 V to +40 V on CANH/CANL absorbs stray DC voltages on long cable harnesses. CAN-FD capability up to 5 Mbit/s in the fast phase future-proofs the design for next-generation high-data-rate CANopen profiles. Add a 60 Ω split termination with two 30 Ω resistors and a 4.7 nF capacitor to SPLIT for optimum EMC behaviour on long stubs.

🚗

Truck, Bus and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Networks

Trucks and city buses run on 24 V electrical systems and operate in harsher electrical environments than passenger cars. The TJA1044T/1Z is supplied from a local 5 V regulator and tolerates bus-fault voltages on CANH and CANL of up to -27 V and +40 V, which covers 24 V jump-start and load-dump envelopes. CAN FD up to 5 Mbit/s enables aggregated sensor traffic from brakes, driveline and ADAS sensors on a single backbone, while keeping the BOM comparable to legacy 1 Mbit/s designs. Always follow the manufacturer datasheet's split-termination layout and add a 24 V TVS (e.g. SMBJ33CA family) on the bus connector for full conformance to OEM heavy-duty EMC specifications.

⚡

Battery Management System (BMS) CAN Slave Modules

Distributed battery-management systems in EVs and stationary battery racks often use CAN as the in-pack communication backbone, with each slave board hosting a TJA1044T/1Z. The transceiver's wide input-tolerance on CANH/CANL allows the bus to be daisy-chained across the pack without active signal conditioning, and its low standby current is critical for minimising quiescent draw from the battery when the vehicle is parked. Combined with the OBC's 12 V auxiliary rail, the part supports 1 Mbit/s frame transmission for cell voltage, temperature and SoC telemetry. Always place a 100 nF X7R bypass capacitor close to VCC and observe the GND-loop layout in the manufacturer's datasheet to avoid ground-bounce faults.

What function does the TJA1044T/1Z perform?
The TJA1044T/1Z is a high-speed CAN transceiver with Standby mode from the Mantis family that provides the physical interface between a CAN protocol controller and the two-wire CAN bus. According to the NXP datasheet, it implements the ISO 11898-2:2024 (3rd edition) physical layer and supports CAN FD fast-phase data rates up to 5 Mbit/s, with the T-variant specified for arbitration up to 1 Mbit/s. It is widely used in automotive ECUs for body, chassis and gateway networks.
What is the operating supply voltage of the TJA1044T/1Z?
The TJA1044T/1Z is supplied from a 5 V VCC rail, typically within 4.75 V to 5.25 V. Always decouple VCC with a 100 nF capacitor placed as close as possible to the pin. The transceiver is designed to operate over the full automotive -40 °C to +150 °C temperature range while staying within this supply window, which makes it suitable for under-hood and body-control ECUs.
What is the maximum data rate the TJA1044T supports?
The TJA1044T is specified for data rates up to 1 Mbit/s in CAN. Across the TJA1044 family, the implementation enables reliable communication in the CAN FD fast phase at data rates up to 5 Mbit/s, with additional loop-delay symmetry parameters defined on the other variants such as TJA1044B and TJA1044T/3. This makes the TJA1044T a drop-in CAN-FD-capable replacement for older 1 Mbit/s nodes.
Does the TJA1044T/1Z have a low-power standby mode?
Yes, the TJA1044T/1Z integrates a low-power standby mode controlled by the STB pin, while the bus is still monitored for a valid wake-up pattern. According to the NXP datasheet, entering standby dramatically reduces quiescent current versus normal mode, which is critical for always-on automotive networks where quiescent draw directly impacts battery drain. Use the wake-up source recognition to ensure the node only wakes on valid CAN traffic.
What is the SPLIT pin used for on the TJA1044T?
The SPLIT pin on the TJA1044T is a reference output that stabilises the recessive common-mode voltage of the CAN bus when used with split termination. NXP recommends connecting one of the two 60 Ω split-termination resistors back to SPLIT instead of ground. This actively stabilises the recessive common-mode at about 2.5 V, which improves EMC behaviour and allows removal of common-mode chokes on tightly-routed bus segments.
How much ESD protection does the TJA1044T/1Z provide?
The TJA1044T/1Z provides ≥8 kV HBM ESD protection on the bus pins (CANH, CANL), suitable for handling field-level discharge events without external TVS diodes for many 12 V automotive systems. According to the NXP datasheet, the bus pins also survive bus-fault voltages from -27 V to +40 V. For harsh 24 V truck or industrial environments, adding external TVS protection is still recommended.
What are the operating temperature limits of the TJA1044T/1Z?
The TJA1044T/1Z is fully specified over -40 °C to +150 °C junction temperature. This makes it suitable for under-hood automotive applications where ambient temperatures can exceed 125 °C, as well as industrial enclosures with minimal thermal management. Cold-start crank profiles down to -40 °C remain within the operating window without special warm-up circuits.
Where can I download the TJA1044T/1Z datasheet PDF?
The official manufacturer datasheet is available on the NXP product information page as the document "TJA1044 - High-speed CAN transceiver with Standby mode". The canonical PDF URL is https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/data-sheet/TJA1044.pdf and it covers the T, /3, /B and GT variants in the same family. Third-party listings on distributor sites such as DigiKey and Mouser will link to the same datasheet revision.
What is the pinout of the TJA1044T/1Z in the 8-SO package?
According to the NXP datasheet, the 8-SO pinout is: pin 1 TXD (transmit data input from MCU), pin 2 GND, pin 3 VCC (5 V supply), pin 4 RXD (receive data output to MCU), pin 5 SPLIT (recessive common-mode stabilisation), pin 6 CANL (low-side bus line), pin 7 CANH (high-side bus line), pin 8 STB (standby control). The pad on the bottom of the SO-8 should be tied to GND or left floating per the layout note in the datasheet.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the TJA1044T/1Z?
The closest drop-in replacement for the TJA1044T/1Z is the NXP TJA1042T/1J, which is also a high-speed CAN transceiver in an SO-8 package with a similar pinout but slightly different standby and SPLIT behaviour. Cross-brand drop-in options include the SIT1044QT/3 from SIT (a pin-compatible Mantis-family clone) and the TCAN1044A-Q1 from Texas Instruments, which is rated for AEC-Q100 applications and supports CAN FD at up to 5 Mbit/s on the same SO-8 footprint. Always confirm ESD, timing and standby-current behaviour against your firmware before mass substitution.
TJA1044T/1Z vs TJA1051T/2Z - which one should I use?
The TJA1044T/1Z is the better choice for new designs where low EMC emissions and CAN FD readiness are required: its split-pin termination support and tightened loop-delay symmetry minimise radiated emissions. The TJA1051T/2Z is a high-speed CAN transceiver without an integrated split terminal and is more suited to cost-sensitive legacy 1 Mbit/s networks. If your design already assumes split termination on the bus, stick with the TJA1044T/1Z to avoid a PCB rework.
TJA1044T/1Z vs TJA1057T - which is better for CAN FD?
The TJA1044T/1Z is the better choice for CAN FD networks up to 5 Mbit/s because the TJA1044 family defines loop-delay symmetry parameters specifically for the fast phase. The TJA1057T is a high-speed CAN transceiver that is optimised for classic CAN at 1 Mbit/s and does not have the same loop-delay guarantees. Choose the TJA1057T only if your bus runs strictly at classic CAN speeds and you want a slightly lower standby-current footprint.
Where can I buy the TJA1044T/1Z and what is the typical price?
As of 2026-10-22, the TJA1044T/1Z is in stock at major distributors such as DigiKey (Mouser and Octopart also list it). Tier-100 pricing has historically sat in the USD 0.90-1.00 range and unit (qty-1) pricing is around USD 1.40; verify with the distributor for current stock and lead time. For automotive-grade AEC-Q100 builds, the equivalent part number in TI's catalogue (TCAN1044A-Q1) is a suitable cross-reference.
Is the TJA1044T/1Z AEC-Q100 qualified?
The TJA1044T/1Z is designed for high-speed automotive CAN applications and is built on automotive-grade wafer diffusion lines, but automotive qualification documentation is typically tied to a dedicated -Q1 / AEC-Q100 suffix variant in NXP's catalogue. Per the manufacturer datasheet, the TJA1044 family supports AEC-Q100 requirements; verify the exact part ordering code with NXP for AEC-Q100-grade documentation if your system needs to record this in PPAP.
Can the TJA1044T/1Z operate on 24 V truck / industrial supply systems?
The TJA1044T/1Z is a 5 V bus-side transceiver, so it operates from a regulated 5 V VCC regardless of whether the upstream supply is 12 V (passenger car) or 24 V (truck / industrial). Bus-pin voltage tolerance on CANH and CANL is up to -27 V to +40 V, which covers 24 V jump-start and alternator load-dump events when paired with external protection. For higher-voltage loads, add a dedicated TVS diode on the bus.

Guide de sélection

Choose the TJA1044T/1Z for new automotive CAN-FD designs that need a robust 5 V SO-8 transceiver with a SPLIT pin for split-termination EMC improvement, ISO 11898-2:2024 (3rd edition) compliance, and -40 °C to +150 °C operating range. Pick the TJA1044T/3 variant when CAN-FD loop-delay symmetry is critical, or the TJA1044GT/1Z when an automotive-grade high-temperature footprint is required. Use the TJA1042T/1J for legacy 1 Mbit/s body networks if SPLIT-based termination is not on the BOM. For cost-sensitive industrial nodes, the SIT1044QT/3 is a pin-compatible drop-in clone, but expect slightly higher radiated emissions. If AEC-Q100 documentation is mandatory, qualify a TCAN1044A-Q1 from Texas Instruments instead - it sits in the same SO-8 footprint but omits the SPLIT pin.

Notes de conception

Place a 100 nF (X7R 10 V) decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to the VCC pin (typically within 2-3 mm of the pad). Connect the GND pin and the exposed SO-8 thermal pad to the GND plane on the top layer via a single, low-impedance via. Keep the CANH/CANL traces matched (skew < 50 ps over the full bus length) and avoid 90° bends on bus traces. Place the split termination components (two 30 Ω resistors and a 4.7 nF capacitor) on the same side of the PCB as the transceiver, leaving a stub of less than 5 mm to CANH/CANL.

Do not float the SPLIT pin if you have a split-termination network connected to it - leave the SPLIT pin open only when you use a single 120 Ω bus termination across CANH and CANL. The STB pin transitions on rising edges: ensure firmware holds STB low during boot and only sets it to one of the two valid operating modes. The TXD input is required to be driven; if your MCU boot delays exceed the WUP guard band, momentarily tie TXD to GND through a 10 kΩ resistor to avoid unwanted bus dominance during firmware download.

For excellent EMC, use split termination tied to SPLIT: two 30 Ω resistors from CANH and CANL to SPLIT, with a 4.7 nF bypass from SPLIT to ground, plus a single 60 Ω resistor across CANH and CANL at each end of the bus. This topology actively stabilises the recessive common-mode at 2.5 V and reduces radiated emissions. Estimated: with this termination on a 5 m bus at 1 Mbit/s, total common-mode noise falls below the OBC OEM GMW 3122 14 dBuV envelope without requiring common-mode chokes.

For long bus backbones (longer than ~10 m) or stub-heavy topology, verify the propagation delay of TJA1044T/1Z and the associated bit timing against the bus-length budget. Loop-delay symmetry is tighter on the /3 and /B variants of the family; for plain 1 Mbit/s classic CAN, the T-variant (TJA1044T) is sufficient. Always specify the bus-line maximum length and number of nodes to compare against the manufacturer's tested conformances shown in the datasheet.
