VNH3SP30-E Présentation
What is an H-bridge motor driver? An H-bridge is a four-switch topology that can drive a brushed DC motor in both directions by reversing the polarity of the applied voltage. Integrated H-bridge ICs combine the four power switches, gate drivers, current sensing, and protection (over-current, over-temperature, under-voltage, cross-conduction prevention) into a single package. This category sits within the broader taxonomy of motor drivers -> motion control ICs -> power management ICs -> semiconductors. The MultiPowerSO-30 package exposes the power die to a top-side thermal pad so heat can be sunk directly to a heatsink or chassis.
Key features include 30 A continuous DC output current, 60 A peak transient capability, very low Rds(on) of approximately 9 mOhm per high-side + low-side leg, integrated PWM current control, and built-in diagnostics. The logic inputs accept 5 V CMOS signals and the device supports PWM frequencies up to 10 kHz for speed/torque regulation. The MultiPowerSO-30 package provides a low thermal resistance path enabling high-current operation without external cooling up to the datasheet rating.
Typical applications include automotive DC motor control such as window lifts, seat adjusters, sunroof drives, door locks, wiper systems, and small electric vehicle traction. Industrial uses include robotic actuators, conveyor drives, valve positioning, and battery-powered equipment where a compact, fully-protected H-bridge is required.
When designing with the VNH3SP30-E, observe the datasheet SOA at high currents - the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance limits continuous current without a heatsink. Use a low-ESR supply bypass close to VCC, and provide a reverse-battery protection diode or P-MOSFET on the supply line because the IC does not include reverse-polarity protection internally.
This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, organized for engineers evaluating the VNH3SP30-E for automotive or industrial motor-drive designs.

Applications typiques
VNH3SP30-E convient pour 6 applications: Automotive Power Window Lift, Power Seat Adjuster Drive, Sunroof and Sliding Roof Drive, Wiper System Motor Control, Door Lock Actuator Drive, Industrial 24V Conveyor Drive.
Automotive Power Window Lift
The VNH3SP30-E is well suited to automotive power window lift motors. With a 30 A continuous / 60 A peak current rating it can drive the stall-current pulses of a typical window motor at 12 V without external MOSFETs. The 5.5 V to 36 V supply range covers 12 V automotive rails including load-dump transients, and the integrated protections (over-current, over-temperature, under-voltage) prevent field failures from stalled linkages or pinched cables. Connect the motor between OUT_A and OUT_B, drive INA/INB for direction, and feed PWM for speed control and anti-pinch current sensing. AEC-Q100 qualification makes it directly usable in automotive ECUs. Compared with discrete H-bridges, the integrated part saves roughly 30-40 mm^2 of PCB area.

Power Seat Adjuster Drive
Electric seat adjustment requires bidirectional torque on a DC motor with stall currents of 20-30 A. The VNH3SP30-E delivers 30 A continuous from a single MultiPowerSO-30 package, eliminating the four discrete MOSFETs plus gate driver normally required. The integrated charge pump drives the high-side N-channel MOSFETs, and the diagnostic output simplifies end-of-line testing on the seat assembly line. With 5 V CMOS logic compatibility it interfaces directly to body-control MCUs without level shifters. The 1.5 C/W junction-to-case thermal resistance (with proper heatsink) keeps junction temperature in check under continuous stall conditions during seat calibration.

Sunroof and Sliding Roof Drive
Sunroof actuators require smooth bidirectional control with anti-trap current sensing. The VNH3SP30-E's PWM input accepts a 0-10 kHz duty cycle that the firmware uses to limit stall current and detect obstructions via motor current feedback. The device's 60 A peak transient rating handles the inrush of cold-weather sunroof starts at -40 C, while the integrated under-voltage lockout prevents operation that could brown out the body-control network. Surface-mount MultiPowerSO-30 packaging simplifies integration into the roof-console PCB. The 9 mOhm Rds(on) per leg keeps conduction losses manageable during extended creep speeds used for one-touch express-close functions.
Recommandé
Wiper System Motor Control
Windshield wiper motors draw 15-25 A at 12 V with peak transients when the blade reverses. The VNH3SP30-E handles these loads with margin, while its 5.5 V to 36 V input range tolerates cranking-dip and load-dump events without malfunction. The integrated cross-conduction prevention eliminates the dead-time circuit normally needed with discrete H-bridges, improving low-speed torque control. Park-position sensing via motor current feedback (using the VNH3SP30-E's PWM current sense) simplifies the wiper linkage by removing mechanical switches. AEC-Q100 automotive qualification allows direct deployment in the BCM or wiper ECU without additional qualification testing.

Door Lock Actuator Drive
Door lock actuators are short-pulse, high-current loads where the VNH3SP30-E's 60 A peak transient rating handles the initial unlock jolt that overcomes the detent. After the pulse, the motor coasts and the IC returns to idle with low quiescent current. The MultiPowerSO-30 package's top-side thermal pad allows the IC to be mounted directly to the door-module PCB copper or aluminum chassis, dissipating the pulse energy efficiently. Reverse-polarity protection must be added externally (a P-MOSFET or Schottky diode on VCC) because the IC lacks internal reverse-battery blocking. The compact BOM reduces door-module cost and weight.
Recommandé
Industrial 24V Conveyor Drive
Outside automotive, the VNH3SP30-E drives 24 V brushed DC conveyor motors in industrial automation. Its 36 V absolute-maximum supply rating comfortably covers 24 V industrial rails plus transient spikes from VFDs and motor relays. The 30 A continuous current drives gear-motors up to roughly 700 W mechanical output, while integrated protections prevent damage during jammed-belt events. PWM speed control from a 3.3 V or 5 V PLC output enables closed-loop velocity control via the motor's incremental encoder. The MultiPowerSO-30 package mounts to a backplane heatsink, simplifying the panel design versus discrete MOSFET bridges.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at 30 A continuous load with Rds(on) of 9 mOhm per leg, total conduction loss is approximately 30^2 x 0.018 = 16.2 W. With theta_JC of 1.5 C/W and a thermal pad bolted to an aluminum heatsink, junction-to-heatsink thermal resistance stays around 2-3 C/W. Without a heatsink, junction-to-ambient rises sharply and the IC will trip over-temperature protection within seconds at full load. For sustained 30 A operation, attach the package's top-side thermal pad to a copper spreader or aluminum chassis with thermal compound.
The VNH3SP30-E does NOT include reverse-battery protection. Add an external P-MOSFET (or Schottky diode rated above peak motor current) on the VCC line to survive a reversed supply connection, which is a common automotive fault. Also add a TVS diode (e.g. 36 V SMAJ-series) across VCC to GND to clamp load-dump transients to within the 36 V absolute maximum rating. Place both protection devices as close to the connector as possible, before the IC's VCC pin bypass capacitor.
Use a 4-layer PCB with a solid inner ground plane directly under the MultiPowerSO-30 footprint to spread heat and reduce ground-bounce. Provide wide copper pours (at least 50 mm^2) on the VCC and GND nets to handle 30 A continuous without trace heating. Place the VCC bypass capacitor (100 uF low-ESR electrolytic + 1 uF ceramic) within 5 mm of the VCC pin. The motor outputs OUT_A/OUT_B should be routed as parallel pairs with via stitching to inner ground/return planes to handle peak current transients.
Do not drive the PWM input above 10 kHz - the gate-drive charge pump cannot keep up and the high-side Rds(on) increases, causing thermal runaway. Always sequence EN high AFTER VCC has settled above 5.5 V to ensure clean startup; bringing EN up before VCC may trigger the under-voltage lockout in an undefined state. If the diagnostic output indicates a fault, cycle EN or VCC to clear the latch. Do not exceed 36 V on VCC, even transiently - the IC's avalanche rating is limited.
