ESP32-WROOM-32E 概要

The Espressif Systems ESP32-WROOM-32E is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth/Bluetooth LE combination module built around the ESP32-D0WD-V3 dual-core Xtensa LX6 SoC, delivering up to 240 MHz clock speed, 520 KB SRAM, and 4 MB SPI flash in a compact 18 x 25.5 x 3.1 mm castellated-pad module with an integrated PCB antenna.

A Wi-Fi + Bluetooth MCU module is a surface-mount system-in-package that combines a microcontroller, radio transceiver, RF matching network, flash memory, crystal, and antenna onto a single certified PCB assembly. Such modules sit at the top of the embedded hierarchy: semiconductor -> wireless SoC -> RF-certified module -> end IoT device, letting engineers add wireless connectivity without RF design expertise or regulatory re-certification of the radio section.

Key differentiating features include dual-core processing that separates Wi-Fi protocol stacks from user applications, 802.11 b/g/n with a data rate up to 150 Mbps, Bluetooth v4.2 BR/EDR and BLE Class 1/2/3 operation, and 38 castellated edge pads that allow both hand soldering and automated assembly. The castellated half-hole pads also enable mounting the module as a sub-PCB on a carrier board.

Technically, the ESP32-D0WD-V3 silicon inside is the bug-fixed revision 3 die, improving RF transmit spectrum cleanliness and resolving the well-known strapping-pin flash-voltage issue found in older revision 1 silicon used in the original ESP32-WROOM-32. The module integrates a 40 MHz crystal, flash memory, and a PCB inverted-F antenna tuned during production.

Typical applications include low-power sensor networks, voice encoding and MP3 streaming devices, smart-home nodes, and industrial IoT gateways, where integrated dual-radio connectivity and sufficient compute headroom are required in one certified package.

For design, respect the strapping pins (GPIO0, GPIO2, GPIO12, GPIO15) at boot and keep the antenna area of the host PCB free of copper and components for best RF performance.

主な用途

ESP32-WROOM-32E の用途: 6 件s: Smart Home and IoT Sensor Nodes, Voice Encoding and Audio Streaming Devices, Industrial IoT Gateways, Wearable and Portable Connected Devices, Security and Camera-Adjacent IoT Devices, Prototyping and STEM Education.

🧩

Smart Home and IoT Sensor Nodes

The ESP32-WROOM-32E fits smart-home sensor and actuator nodes because it integrates Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth v4.2 + BLE in one certified module, removing the need for a separate radio BOM line. Its ESP32-D0WD-V3 dual-core LX6 CPU at up to 240 MHz handles TLS, MQTT, and local control loops concurrently on separate cores, while 520 KB SRAM buffers sensor data. In typical use, the module runs ESP-IDF or Arduino firmware, samples I2C sensors, and reports over Wi-Fi with BLE used for provisioning. Deep-sleep modes reduce current to microamps between wake cycles, and the 3.0-3.6 V input range pairs directly with a single Li-ion cell through a 3.3 V LDO, making multi-year deployments practical.

🎧

Voice Encoding and Audio Streaming Devices

Espressif explicitly targets voice encoding, music streaming, and MP3 decoding with this module family. The dual-core architecture dedicates one LX6 core at 240 MHz to audio codecs while the other manages Wi-Fi streaming, and the 520 KB SRAM plus external SPI flash store codec firmware and buffers. The I2S peripheral connects directly to audio ADC/DAC or codec chips such as the ES8388, and the N8/N16 flash variants accommodate large firmware and asset images for OTA updates. Because the Wi-Fi radio achieves up to 150 Mbps PHY rate, sustained MP3 or AAC streaming with modest headroom is achievable, though designers should validate throughput under concurrent BLE activity.

🏭

Industrial IoT Gateways

In industrial settings, the ESP32-WROOM-32E serves as a low-cost protocol gateway bridging Modbus, CAN, or RS-485 field devices to cloud services. The module's CAN controller, multiple UARTs, SPI, and I2C interfaces connect to transceiver PHYs, while the -40C to +85C operating range covers control-cabinet temperatures. The Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n radio with 150 Mbps PHY rate uploads aggregated telemetry, and BLE enables local commissioning from mobile tools. Designers should protect the module's GPIO from industrial transients with TVS diodes and isolation, and use the castellated pads for solderable, vibration-tolerant attachment on carrier PCBs within DIN-rail enclosures.

📱

Wearable and Portable Connected Devices

For portable and wearable connected products, the 18 x 25.5 x 3.1 mm footprint and 3.0-3.6 V supply allow direct operation from a single-cell Li-ion battery via a compact LDO. The BLE radio supports smartphone pairing for configuration and data sync, while Wi-Fi handles bulk uploads when in range. Light-sleep and deep-sleep modes cut average current dramatically, extending battery life between charges, and the 520 KB SRAM supports on-device signal processing such as motion classification. The integrated PCB antenna of the 32E avoids external-antenna BOM cost, though plastic enclosures and antenna keep-out zones on the host PCB are required for optimal RF performance.

🎥

Security and Camera-Adjacent IoT Devices

The ESP32-WROOM-32E supports door/window sensors, PIR-based alarms, and low-frame-rate camera accessories via its SPI camera interface compatibility within the ESP32 family. Dual radios enable a Wi-Fi alarm path plus BLE proximity keyfob detection, and the 240 MHz dual-core CPU performs local decision logic and encrypted transport (TLS) without a host MCU. AES, SHA, and RSA hardware accelerators in the ESP32-D0WD-V3 secure cloud communication and secure-boot chains. Designers should note that GPIO count and SRAM limit full video streaming; for high-resolution camera streams, the ESP32-S3 or ESP32-CAM-class solutions are the recommended upgrade, while the 32E excels at sensor-heavy security endpoints.

🔧

Prototyping and STEM Education

The ESP32-WROOM-32E is the module at the heart of popular dev boards such as the ESP32-DEVKITC-32E, making it a default choice for prototyping and education. Castellated pads support both hand soldering and pogo-pin fixtures, the Arduino IDE, MicroPython, and ESP-IDF toolchains are fully supported, and an enormous community library ecosystem shortens time-to-first-demo. Because the module is the same certified part used in production hardware, prototypes port directly to manufacturing without re-certification of the radio section. Students and engineers can move from breadboard experiments with the dev board to a custom carrier PCB carrying the module with identical firmware behavior.

What are the key specifications of ESP32-WROOM-32E that engineers should know?
The ESP32-WROOM-32E is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n plus Bluetooth v4.2 BR/EDR + BLE module based on the ESP32-D0WD-V3 dual-core Xtensa LX6 SoC running up to 240 MHz, with 520 KB SRAM and an integrated PCB antenna. It operates from 3.0 V to 3.6 V, from -40C to +85C, in an 18 x 25.5 x 3.1 mm 38-pad castellated package. According to the Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32E/32UE datasheet, it targets low-power sensor networks through voice encoding and MP3 streaming applications.
What is the ESP32-WROOM-32E pinout?
The ESP32-WROOM-32E has 38 castellated pads. Key pins include pad 1 GND, pad 2 3V3, pad 3 EN (chip enable), pad 4 SENSOR_VP (GPIO36), pad 5 SENSOR_VN (GPIO39), pads 6-14 GPIO34 down to GPIO13, pads 23-31 GPIO15, GPIO2, GPIO0, GPIO4, GPIO16, GPIO17, GPIO5, GPIO18, GPIO19, pad 33 GPIO21, pad 34 RXD0 (GPIO3), pad 35 TXD0 (GPIO1), pad 36 GPIO22, pad 37 GPIO23, and pad 38 GND. Pads 17-22 are marked NC (no connect) on the 32E, unlike the older WROOM-32. Full pin definitions are in the Espressif datasheet.
Where can I download the ESP32-WROOM-32E datasheet PDF?
The official ESP32-WROOM-32E and ESP32-WROOM-32UE datasheet PDF is available free from Espressif documentation at documentation.espressif.com. The 33-page document covers overview, pin definitions, functional description, peripherals, RF characteristics, and electrical characteristics. Is ESP32-WROOM-32E a drop-in replacement for ESP32-WROOM-32D?
Yes, the ESP32-WROOM-32E is a drop-in replacement for the ESP32-WROOM-32D, using the exact same 38-pin footprint and castellated pad layout. The main difference is pads 17-22, which are listed as NC (no connect) on the 32E, whereas the 32D exposed some of these pads. The 32E uses ESP32-D0WD-V3 (revision 3) silicon, which fixes the GPIO12 strapping flash-voltage bug and improves RF transmit spectrum. Designs that do not rely on pins 17-22 can migrate directly to the 32E.
What is the difference between ESP32-WROOM-32E and ESP32-WROOM-32UE?
The only hardware difference is the antenna: the ESP32-WROOM-32E uses an integrated PCB inverted-F antenna, while the ESP32-WROOM-32UE provides an IPEX/U.FL connector for an external antenna. Both share the same ESP32-D0WD-V3 SoC, 38-pad footprint, electrical characteristics, and firmware compatibility, so they are largely interchangeable on the same carrier PCB. Choose the 32E for cost-optimized open-air designs and the 32UE for metal enclosures or antenna placement flexibility.
Can ESP32-WROOM-32E replace the original ESP32-WROOM-32?
Yes, the ESP32-WROOM-32E is the recommended active replacement for the original ESP32-WROOM-32, which is not recommended for new designs. The 32E uses the same 38-pad footprint with the same physical dimensions, so it fits the same land pattern. It upgrades the silicon to ESP32-D0WD-V3 revision 3, fixing known strapping-pin and RF issues. The main caution is that pads 17-22 on the 32E are NC, so designs using those pads on the original module require review before migration.
What supply voltage does the ESP32-WROOM-32E require?
The ESP32-WROOM-32E operates from a 3.0 V to 3.6 V supply with 3.3 V as the nominal value, per the Espressif datasheet electrical characteristics. It is not 5 V tolerant on its GPIO pins, so level shifting or a 3.3 V regulator is required when interfacing with 5 V logic. Designers should provide at least 500 mA of supply headroom because Wi-Fi transmit bursts can draw significant peak current, and bulk plus ceramic decoupling capacitors close to the 3V3 pad are strongly recommended.
What is the price of ESP32-WROOM-32E?
The ESP32-WROOM-32E typically costs around 2 to 3 USD in single-unit quantity from major distributors such as DigiKey and Mouser, with price dropping at 100-piece and 1000-piece breaks (as of 2026-09-15). Exact pricing varies by flash-memory suffix (N4, N8, N16), since larger flash variants cost more. Check the pricing table on this page or the DigiKey product page for current volume-tier pricing and stock availability before placing orders.
Where to buy ESP32-WROOM-32E online?
The ESP32-WROOM-32E can be purchased online from authorized distributors including DigiKey Electronics, Mouser Electronics, and other Espressif-authorized channels; XAIPART also offers quoting and ordering for this module. DigiKey lists variants such as ESP32-WROOM-32E-N4, -N8, and -N16 (16 MB flash). For production volumes, purchasing through authorized distributors guarantees genuine Espressif parts with traceability, which matters because counterfeit ESP32 modules with inferior RF performance are common on gray-market channels.
Is ESP32-WROOM-32E suitable for battery-powered IoT sensors?
Yes, the ESP32-WROOM-32E is well suited to battery-powered IoT nodes when combined with ESP-IDF deep-sleep and light-sleep modes, which reduce current consumption to microamp and milliamp levels respectively. The dual-core architecture allows radio and protocol tasks to run on one core while application logic sleeps or batches work. For multi-year coin-cell designs, evaluate the ESP32-C3 or ESP32-C6 modules as lower-power alternatives, but for sensors recharging or replacing batteries monthly to yearly, the 32E is a proven, low-cost choice.
When should I choose ESP32-WROOM-32E over ESP32-WROOM-32UE?
Choose the ESP32-WROOM-32E when the product enclosure is plastic or the module sits in free air, because its integrated PCB antenna avoids the cost and BOM of an external antenna. Choose the ESP32-WROOM-32UE when the housing is metallic, the antenna must be positioned away from the PCB, or RF certification flexibility is needed via an external antenna. Electrically the two are identical - same ESP32-D0WD-V3 SoC, same 38-pad footprint, same temperature range - so the decision is purely antenna and mechanical integration driven.
ESP32-WROOM-32E vs ESP32-WROOM-32E-N16 - what is the difference?
The difference is flash memory capacity: the plain ESP32-WROOM-32E ordering code requires a flash suffix in production (N4 = 4 MB, N8 = 8 MB, N16 = 16 MB). The ESP32-WROOM-32E-N16, listed at DigiKey, carries 16 MB of SPI flash for large firmware images, OTA dual-bank updates, or embedded assets like audio files. All variants share the identical ESP32-D0WD-V3 die, radio, footprint, and pinout, so the choice depends only on code and data storage requirements, not on electrical or RF performance.
Does ESP32-WROOM-32E support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth simultaneously?
Yes, the ESP32 platform supports simultaneous Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operation, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi coexistence via shared antenna time-division multiplexing. According to the Espressif datasheet, the module combines 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth v4.2 BR/EDR + BLE in one radio chain, so Wi-Fi and BLE can run concurrently with the software stack arbitrating airtime. Note that heavy concurrent use of both radios reduces available throughput on each, which should be accounted for in throughput-sensitive applications.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for ESP32-WROOM-32E?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in equivalent in the same 38-pad footprint, because the ESP32-WROOM-32E footprint is Espressif-proprietary. Functionally comparable modules from other vendors include Nordic nRF52840-based and Raspberry Pi RP2040+W modules, but these require different footprints and firmware ports. The safest substitutes are Espressif same-footprint parts: ESP32-WROOM-32D, ESP32-WROOM-32UE, and flash-size variants N4/N8/N16. For new designs needing more performance, the pin-different ESP32-S3-WROOM series is the vendor-recommended upgrade path, not a drop-in.
What design precautions apply to the strapping pins of ESP32-WROOM-32E?
GPIO0, GPIO2, GPIO12 (MTDI), and GPIO15 (MTDO) are strapping pins sampled at reset and must not be pulled to conflicting levels at boot. GPIO0 low enters download mode; GPIO12 high selects a 1.8 V flash voltage that can brick booting on modules designed for 3.3 V flash. Add pull-up or pull-down resistors per the Espressif hardware design guidelines, keep strapping nets free of external drive during reset, and verify boot behavior across power-supply ramp conditions during design validation.
Is ESP32-WROOM-32E still in production and supported?
Yes, the ESP32-WROOM-32E is an active product in Espressif's catalog and is the current-generation replacement for the older ESP32-WROOM-32 and -32D modules, which are marked not recommended for new designs. Espressif continues to support it with ESP-IDF, Arduino core, and MicroPython firmware updates, and distributors such as DigiKey and Mouser list it as an active, in-production part. For new designs, it remains a safe long-term choice within the mature ESP32 classic family.

選定ガイド

Choose the ESP32-WROOM-32E when you need a proven, low-cost dual-radio (Wi-Fi + BT v4.2/BLE) module with dual-core 240 MHz compute in a hand-solderable castellated footprint. Within the family, pick the suffix by storage: N4 for simple firmware, N8 for buffering and assets, N16 for large OTA images or audio files. Choose the ESP32-WROOM-32UE instead when the enclosure is metallic or the antenna must be relocated via an external antenna. Choose the ESP32-WROOM-32D only to maintain an existing legacy build; for new designs the 32E supersedes it with rev 3 silicon fixes. If your product needs more GPIO, USB OTG, or AI acceleration, step up to the ESP32-S3-WROOM series - but that requires a new footprint and is not a drop-in. There is no cross-brand drop-in equivalent; the footprint is Espressif-proprietary, so switching vendors means a PCB respin.

設計ノート

Keep a complete antenna keep-out zone on the host PCB: no copper, traces, or components under or beside the module's PCB antenna section (roughly the top 8-10 mm of the module). Route no signals on layers beneath the antenna area; a solid GND plane should stop before the antenna region. Espressif's hardware design guidelines specify module placement at the board edge with the antenna extending beyond or over free space for best radiation efficiency.

Provide a 3.3 V supply with at least 500 mA headroom. Wi-Fi transmit bursts draw high peak current, so place a 10 uF bulk capacitor plus a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor close to the 3V3 and GND pads. Avoid long thin power traces; use a power plane or at least wide (>=0.5 mm) traces. An LDO chosen only for average current will cause brownout resets during TX bursts - verify supply droop under radio stress during validation.

Respect the strapping pins: GPIO0 (download mode), GPIO2, GPIO12/MTDI (flash voltage), and GPIO15/MTDO are sampled at reset. Never let external circuitry pull GPIO12 high at boot, since it selects a 1.8 V flash voltage and prevents startup on 3.3 V flash modules. Add appropriate pull-ups (EN, IO0 via boot switch) and pull-downs per Espressif hardware guidelines, and leave pads 17-22 unconnected since they are NC on the 32E.

Use castellated pads for both reflow and hand-solder attachment; add a periphery landing pattern with slightly elongated pads for inspection. ESP32 module modules are Moisture-Sensitive Devices - follow the MSL rating on the packing label and bake if the floor-life is exceeded before reflow.
