LT8364HMSE#PBF 概要

The Analog Devices LT8364HMSE#PBF is a current-mode DC/DC switching regulator with an integrated 60V, 4A power switch, packaged in a 12-lead exposed-pad MSOP (MSE) with thermally enhanced top covering over the die. Operating from a wide 2.8V to 60V input, the device delivers a positive fixed or adjustable output of 1.6V to 60V in boost or SEPIC topologies, and supports inverting configurations through its unique single-feedback-pin architecture. Burst Mode operation holds quiescent current as low as 9 µA, preserving efficiency at light loads while keeping typical output ripple below 15 mV.

A switching DC/DC converter (switch-mode power supply, SMPS) is a power management integrated circuit that uses a power switch (transistor), energy-storage inductor, and output capacitor to convert one DC voltage level to another with high efficiency - typically 85-95% versus 30-50% for a linear regulator. Within the SMPS taxonomy the LT8364 sits in the non-isolated single-ended family (boost, buck-boost/SEPIC, inverting) rather than the isolated flyback/forward family. Its current-mode control and high-side drive architecture make it well suited to industrial, automotive, and telecom rails where input voltage can vary widely and the converter must tolerate transients without latch-up.

Key features include a 2 MHz default switching frequency (programmable from 1.4 MHz to 2 MHz via RT resistor), 60V absolute maximum switch rating, internal 4A peak switch current, low-IQ Burst Mode operation, internal soft-start, thermal shutdown, and an exposed-pad package rated for high dissipation. The single FB pin simplifies compensation and supports positive or negative feedback configurations by component selection.

The device uses current-mode control with a 60V N-channel MOSFET switch and a synchronous high-side drive output for external P-MOSFET or PNP pass-element architectures in some configurations. The internal reference is trimmed for accuracy, and the MSOP-12 exposed-pad package provides a low junction-to-ambient thermal resistance suitable for multi-watt dissipation at moderate ambient temperatures.

Typical applications include industrial 24V/48V to point-of-load boost converters, automotive 12V battery to higher-voltage rails for sensors and LED drivers, SEPIC supplies for USB-PD and bias rails, inverting converters for op-amp negative supplies, and high-voltage bias generators for IGBT gate drives.

When designing with the LT8364, ensure the input bulk capacitor ESR is low enough to handle the 4A switch current pulses without excessive voltage ripple. For SEPIC and inverting topologies a coupled or two-inductor network plus an AC coupling capacitor is required - follow the datasheet reference design BOM for inductor values. Estimated: at VIN = 12V, VOUT = 24V, IOUT = 0.4A (50% duty, 2 MHz), power dissipation is approximately (1 - η) × POUT ≈ 0.48 W assuming 90% efficiency, well within the MSOP-12 EP thermal budget at moderate ambient.

🏭

Industrial 24V/48V to Higher-Voltage Boost Converter

The LT8364HMSE#PBF is engineered for industrial 24V/48V bus rails that must be stepped up to higher voltages for downstream point-of-load converters, gate drivers, or sensor excitation. With a 2.8V to 60V input window and integrated 60V, 4A switch, the LT8364 can deliver roughly 0.8A at 48V output from a 12V to 24V input rail at 90% efficiency. The exposed-pad MSOP-12 package keeps junction temperature rise under 30°C at 0.5W dissipation on a 1 sq-inch copper pour. Its single-FB-pin architecture and programmable switching frequency (1.4-2 MHz) let designers optimize for inductor size versus efficiency, while Burst Mode operation holds quiescent current at 9 µA for low-power standby operation in PLC and industrial control systems.

🚗

Automotive 12V Battery to 24V/36V Bias Rail

The LT8364HMSE#PBF's 60V absolute maximum switch rating makes it a strong fit for automotive 12V battery applications, including jump-start transients and 24V truck systems. Its H grade -40 to 150°C junction range covers underhood automotive environments, while the 60V switch handles load-dump events up to 35V commonly specified by ISO 7637-2 without external TVS protection. In a 12V to 24V boost configuration, the LT8364 delivers roughly 0.6A at full switch stress; for 12V to 36V LED driver front-ends, current is derated to ~0.3A. The MSOP-12 EP package is footprint-compatible with the industrial analog and the LT8364EMSE#PBF, allowing one PCB layout to serve multiple end-products by SKU.

🔧

SEPIC Supply for Wide-Vin USB-PD and Bias Rails

The LT8364HMSE#PBF's SEPIC capability is valuable for USB-PD and bias applications where the input rail can swing above and below the desired output. With Vin ranging from 2.8V to 60V, a SEPIC configuration can regulate a constant 12V or 15V output across the full range - critical for USB-PD source controllers that negotiate voltages from 5V to 20V. The 4A switch supports output currents up to 1.5A at 12V from a 24V input. The single-FB-pin architecture simplifies SEPIC compensation versus traditional two-loop designs. Compared to a buck-boost solution, the LT8364 SEPIC topology offers lower noise and simpler magnetics, with the trade-off of lower peak efficiency (~85% vs ~95%).

🔧

Inverting Converter for Negative Rails

The LT8364HMSE#PBF's single-FB-pin architecture natively supports inverting topologies, making it well suited to generating -5V, -12V, or -15V rails from a positive input for op-amp negative supplies, LCD bias generators, and analog sensor excitation. With Vin = 12V, the part can produce -12V at roughly 0.4A output current. The MSOP-12 EP package's exposed pad efficiently removes heat from the internal switch at high duty cycles. Designers should follow the datasheet's inverting reference design for the coupled inductor or two-inductor plus AC coupling capacitor network. The LT8364's 60V switch rating tolerates the high peak switch voltages typical of inverting topologies without external protection.

⚡

High-Voltage Bias for IGBT and MOSFET Gate Drives

The LT8364HMSE#PBF is a strong candidate for generating the 15V to 20V bias supplies used to drive IGBT and high-side N-channel MOSFET gate drivers in motor control and inverter stages. With Vin from 12V/24V/48V bus rails and a 60V switch rating, the part can deliver 18V at 0.3A for IGBT gate bias with adequate headroom for transient suppression. The 2 MHz default switching frequency keeps the boost inductor and EMI filter compact for PCB area constraints. Burst Mode operation at 9 µA Iq preserves standby efficiency when the inverter is in idle, which is critical for battery-powered industrial equipment and electric vehicle auxiliary rails.

📱

Portable and Battery-Powered Equipment

For battery-powered and portable designs the LT8364HMSE#PBF's 9 µA Burst Mode quiescent current is a defining advantage for extending runtime at standby. Operating from a 2.8V minimum input, the part can boost a near-dead Li-ion cell (3.0V) up to 5V USB or 12V sensor rails. The 2 MHz default switching frequency enables a sub-10 mm² inductor footprint, and the MSOP-12 EP form is footprint compatible with the LT8330 for power-derated versions. For solar-powered remote sensors or handheld test instruments, the LT8364's high efficiency at moderate loads (90% at 0.2-0.5A) makes it a strong choice over linear regulators that would waste 30-50% of the input power as heat.

🌐

Telecom and Networking Point-of-Load Conversion

The LT8364HMSE#PBF is well matched to telecom -48V distributed-bus architectures that need intermediate point-of-load conversion to 5V, 12V, or 24V rails for DSPs, FPGAs, and optical transceivers. Its 60V input capability directly accepts the -48V telecom bus return path through a conventional boost or SEPIC topology, eliminating an intermediate front-end converter and reducing BOM cost. The exposed-pad MSOP-12 package provides adequate thermal dissipation at 0.5-1W continuous output power on standard 1-2 oz copper PCB pours. Combined with Burst Mode operation, the LT8364 achieves standby power consumption that meets telecom Energy Star and 80 PLUS requirements.

What are the key specifications of the LT8364HMSE#PBF that engineers should know?
The LT8364HMSE#PBF integrates a 60 V, 4 A peak current-mode switch, operates from 2.8 V to 60 V input, supports boost, SEPIC, and inverting topologies from a single FB pin, switches at 2 MHz default (1.4-2 MHz programmable), consumes 9 µA quiescent current in Burst Mode, and offers < 15 mV typical output ripple. It is housed in a 12-lead MSOP-EP (MSE) package with internal soft-start and thermal shutdown. These specifications make it a versatile choice for wide-Vin industrial, automotive, and telecom point-of-load conversion.
Can the LT8364 be used for inverting topologies like -12V from +12V?
Yes. The LT8364's single-FB architecture supports inverting topologies by configuring the FB pin divider referenced to ground and using a coupled or two-inductor network plus an AC coupling capacitor. With Vin = 12 V the part can generate -5 V to -40 V rails at currents appropriate to the duty cycle. Per the Analog Devices LT8364 datasheet inverting reference circuit, the SW node swings below ground, so the input bulk capacitor and switch path must be sized for the negative voltage excursion.

選定ガイド

Choose the LT8364HMSE#PBF when you need a versatile 60V-tolerant DC/DC converter that can operate as a boost, SEPIC, or inverting topology from a single 12-lead exposed-pad MSOP package. It is the strongest choice for industrial 24V/48V rails, automotive 12V battery applications (with H-grade 150 °C junction rating), and any design that may need to switch between topologies during development. Choose the LT8364EMSE#PBF (E grade, 0 to 125 °C) if your ambient environment is commercial/industrial and you can save cost with a lower temperature grade. Choose the LT8364EDE#PBF (DFN-12) when PCB area is critical and you can move to a 3mm × 3mm DFN package. Avoid the LT8330MSE#PBF unless your output current is below 0.3A - the 1A switch rating will limit power throughput. For applications above 5A output current, consider the LT8210 or LT3571 family with higher switch ratings.

設計ノート

Estimated: At Vin=12V, Vout=24V, Iout=0.5A (90% efficiency), power dissipation is approximately (1/0.9 - 1) × 12W ≈ 1.3W in the LT8364HMSE#PBF's MSOP-12 EP package. With a typical theta_JA of ~40°C/W on a 1 sq-inch 2-oz copper pour, junction temperature rise is roughly 52°C above ambient, leaving headroom for +125°C operation. For 24V to 48V boost at 0.3A output, dissipation rises to ~1.6W; use at least 2 sq-inches of copper or forced-air cooling. The exposed pad (pin 11) MUST be soldered to a sufficiently large copper pour - thermal vias to internal ground planes are recommended for multi-watt dissipation.

Place the input bulk capacitor, the BST capacitor (pin 9), the VCC bypass capacitor (pin 10), and the output capacitor as close as possible to their corresponding LT8364HMSE#PBF pads. The boost or SEPIC inductor should be placed near the SW pin (pin 8) with a wide trace to handle the 4A peak switch current. Keep the FB trace (pin 5) away from the SW node to avoid noise coupling into the feedback loop - this is especially critical for inverting topologies where the SW node swings below ground. Use a star-ground topology with the LT8364's GND (pin 7) and PGND (pin 11) connected at a single point to avoid high-current ground bounce.

Do not omit the BST capacitor between BST (pin 9) and SW (pin 8) - without it the high-side N-channel MOSFET drive fails and the converter will not start. Do not exceed 60V at the SW pin even briefly, or the internal switch will suffer avalanche damage. For SEPIC topologies the AC coupling capacitor must be rated for the full SW voltage swing; X7R/X7S ceramics rated 100V or higher are recommended. In inverting mode the input bulk capacitor sees the full peak switch current and must have low ESR (ceramic or polymer) - do not use aluminum electrolytics alone. Finally, do not connect the exposed pad to a ground plane that carries high switching currents; route it to a quiet ground reference or use thermal vias to a heat-spreader plane.

The LT8364HMSE#PBF's 2 MHz default switching frequency generates EMI in the 30-200 MHz range that can couple into adjacent analog traces. Place a small ferrite bead or pi-filter on the input supply line to attenuate common-mode emissions from the SW node. Use a shielded inductor for the boost/SEPIC inductor to reduce radiated emissions, and consider spread-spectrum frequency dithering (available on some LT8364 variants) for EMI-sensitive applications. Keep the SW node copper area minimal and surround it with a ground pour to reduce antenna-loop area. For CISPR 25 / CISPR 22 Class B compliance, an input pi-filter (LC) is typically required in addition to the LT8364's internal filtering.
