MPC8321EVRADDC 概要

The NXP MPC8321EVRADDC is a PowerQUICC II Pro communications processor based on the PowerPC e300c2 core, integrating a 32-bit RISC architecture at 266 MHz in a 516-pin PBGA package (27x27 mm). As a member of the MPC8323E PowerQUICC II Pro family, this SoC combines a high-performance communications engine with on-chip peripherals including DDR1/DDR2 memory controllers, PCI, USB 2.0, a QUICC Engine (QE), and an integrated security engine (SEC). The MPC8321E is a member of the MPC8323E family of cost-effective network communications processors.

A communications processor (also called a network processor or SoC) is an application-specific integrated circuit optimized for executing networking and telecom workloads such as packet routing, encryption, and protocol termination. Within the broader taxonomy, the MPC8321E occupies the position: microprocessor -> communications processor -> SoC -> semiconductor. It targets SOHO routers, IP services gateways, and small-to-medium enterprise access equipment where deterministic throughput and integrated peripherals reduce BOM cost.

Key features include hardware-accelerated encryption (SEC) for IPsec/SSL, multi-PHY Ethernet support via the QUICC Engine, and flexible peripheral multiplexing. Operating voltage is 1.0 V core (typical), and the part is rated for the commercial 0C to 105C extended operating range. The 516-PBGA package exposes high-speed serial interfaces, parallel DDR memory bus, and multiple PCI segments for legacy and modern interconnect.

Typical applications include broadband CPE, IP-PBX, secure VPN gateways, industrial control with Ethernet, and wireless access points. The integrated security engine accelerates DES/3DES/AES/SHA workloads at line rate without burdening the e300c2 core, making the device suitable for VPN termination and IPsec-accelerated edge routers.

When designing with this device, ensure proper decoupling on the 1.0 V core rail and that the DDR2 memory topology follows the Fly-by topology guidelines in the hardware specifications document. JTAG boundary-scan must be enabled for production test access. The lead-free PBGA-516 has a 1.0 mm pitch; PCB designers should plan for microvia stack-ups to fan out the dense BGA.

Yes, within limits. The MPC8321EVRADDC is rated for the 0C to +105C operating temperature range, which covers most indoor industrial enclosures but not the full -40C to +85C industrial AEC-Q100 envelope. For true industrial harsh-environment deployments, designers should consult NXP's industrial-grade part numbers in the same MPC83xx family. The plastic PBGA-516 package is MSL-3 rated and must be dry-bag stored before reflow.
Does the MPC8321EVRADDC support USB 2.0?
Yes. The MPC8321EVRADDC integrates a USB 2.0 High-Speed controller with on-chip PHY, supporting host, device, and OTG modes per the Freescale hardware specifications document. The USB controller shares bandwidth with the QUICC Engine through the internal SoC bus, so designers must allocate priority queues when both USB and Ethernet traffic run concurrently. The USB differential pair uses dedicated balls near the package edge to maintain 90 ohm differential impedance.
What is the operating temperature range of the MPC8321EVRADDC?
The MPC8321EVRADDC operates from 0C to +105C junction temperature, per the Freescale/NXP PowerQUICC II Pro family datasheet. This commercial-extended range covers SOHO, enterprise, and most indoor industrial use cases. For outdoor or automotive-grade designs, NXP offers related MPC83xx SKUs with -40C to +125C qualification. Always verify junction temperature at worst-case ambient with the SoC power model and your PCB thermal stack-up before deployment.
Can the MPC8321EVRADDC be replaced by a Freescale MPC8321EVRADDC?
Yes. The MPC8321EVRADDC sold by NXP today is the same silicon that was originally branded Freescale Semiconductor before the 2015 NXP-Freescale merger. DigiKey still lists the Freescale-branded part (DigiKey 11519030) under Rochester Electronics for legacy procurement, but it is the identical die and package as the NXP-branded version. Both pass the same qualification and errata; firmware is fully interchangeable.

設計ノート

Estimated: at 266 MHz with DDR2 active and QE traffic, the MPC8321EVRADDC dissipates roughly 3.5 to 4.5 W typical and 5 W worst case. The PBGA-516 package has a typical theta_JA of approximately 18 C/W on a 4-layer PCB with 10 square inches of top-side copper. This yields a junction-to-ambient rise of about 90 C at 5 W, requiring derating or a small clip-on heatsink to stay under the 105 C maximum junction temperature. Designers must include a thermal via array under the package center for heat transfer to inner copper planes. Forced-air cooling (200 LFM) drops effective theta_JA to roughly 8 C/W, comfortably supporting continuous 5 W dissipation.

The 516-PBGA uses a 1.0 mm ball pitch on a 27x27 mm substrate, requiring microvia (0.1 mm via diameter) or via-in-pad PCB technology for reliable breakout. A 4-layer stack-up with 0.2 mm core and 0.4 mm prepreg is recommended, with GND on layer 2 directly under the BGA and PWR (1.0 V) on layer 3. Fan-out traces must be length-matched within DDR2 timing skew limits; fly-by topology is mandatory for DDR2 at the top speed grade. Decoupling: place 0402 0.1 uF X7R capacitors on every VCC ball pair, plus eight 10 uF bulk capacitors distributed around the package perimeter for transient current demand.

The 1.0 V core supply must ramp monotonically within the NXP-specified sequence relative to the 3.3 V I/O supply to avoid latch-up. Use a dedicated PMIC (NXP MC34713 or similar) with Power-On Reset and voltage sequencing. The DDR2 supply (1.8 V) must ramp before or simultaneous with the 1.0 V core rail. Add a 10 uF tantalum plus 100 nF ceramic at each voltage rail entry to the SoC. Estimated core current at 266 MHz with all peripherals on reaches 5 A peak; budget the regulator for at least 6 A continuous output to handle transient CPU bursts.

DDR2 data and address signals require 50 ohm single-ended controlled impedance with 100 ohm differential for clock pairs. Trace length matching must be within plus/minus 25 mil for the DDR byte lanes. The 90 ohm differential USB pair must be routed on the top layer with no splits and length-matched within 150 mil. Ethernet MII/RGMII signals through the QUICC Engine should be length-matched per the QUICC Engine reference manual to avoid PHY-side timing failures.

Do not assume the MPC8321EVRADDC's Security Engine supports all cipher modes out of the box; verify the firmware version's SEC driver matches the silicon revision (Rev 4 or later is current). Do not use the JTAG boundary-scan during normal operation without configuring TRST properly, or the TAP controller can lock the entire SoC. Do not exceed 105 C junction temperature under any operating condition, including transient spike currents. Avoid routing DDR2 in a T-branch topology - fly-by is mandatory at 266 MHz. Finally, store PBGA-516 parts in dry-pack before reflow to avoid popcorn cracking from absorbed humidity.
