PIC12CE518/JW 개요

The Microchip Technology PIC12CE518/JW is an 8-bit CMOS OTP (one-time-programmable) RISC microcontroller in the PIC12C family, factory-fitted in an 8-pin CERDIP window package (8-CDIP, 0.300 inch / 7.62 mm) that exposes the die for UV erasure. It integrates 768 bytes of EPROM program memory (organized as 512 x 12-bit words), 16 bytes of EEPROM data memory, and 25 bytes of general-purpose RAM, with 5 digital I/O pins. The core runs up to 4 MHz from an internal RC or external clock, executes single-cycle instructions in 1 us, and operates from 3.0 V to 5.5 V.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path, on-chip program memory, RAM, and configurable I/O. Within the semiconductor taxonomy, an MCU belongs to the Integrated Circuits > Microcontrollers hierarchy; it sits one level below "embedded processor" and above bare logic ICs. PIC12C-series parts implement Microchip's RISC instruction set with only 33 single-word instructions, enabling very small code size and predictable interrupt latency. This category is widely used in cost-sensitive and space-constrained embedded designs such as appliance controls, sensor interfaces, and replacement of discrete logic.

Key features of the PIC12CE518/JW include on-chip EEPROM for non-volatile parameter storage (16 bytes), a hardware universal synchronous/asynchronous receiver-transmitter (USART/SPI), an 8-bit timer/counter, a watchdog timer with its own RC oscillator, in-circuit serial programming (ICSP), and a programmable code-protection bit. Its 8-bit timer with 8-bit prescaler and the 4 MHz oscillator provide deterministic timing for simple control loops. Power-down sleep mode drops the supply current to the microampere range, allowing battery-friendly standby operation. The wide 3.0-5.5 V supply range tolerates common 3.3 V and 5 V rails.

The windowed 8-CDIP package exposes the EPROM die so engineers can erase the program memory with UV light and reuse the part during prototyping. That makes the PIC12CE518/JW especially attractive for engineering development, firmware regression testing, and low-volume pilot builds where OTP blank-window chips are economical. The CERDIP body is hermetic, supporting industrial and defense applications that demand through-hole reliability. The same silicon die is also offered in plastic OTP and flash equivalents (PIC12C518, PIC12CE518, PIC12F629), giving designers an upgrade path once firmware stabilizes.

Typical applications include low-cost remote-control encoders, battery-powered sensor nodes, simple motor and relay drivers, security-system keypads, and white-goods user-interface controllers. The on-chip EEPROM allows storage of calibration coefficients, channel settings, or counters that survive power cycles, eliminating an external serial EEPROM. USART/SPI enables direct connection to peripherals such as LCD drivers, EEPROMs, or simple RF links, while the watchdog timer recovers the MCU from software lock-ups.

When designing with this device, treat the OTP window carefully: exposure to direct sunlight or fluorescent UV can erase the program. Always store windowed parts in opaque tubes or light-tight containers and apply a protective sticker over the window before deployment if the design will see UV light in service. Programming must follow Microchip's ICSP timing exactly; out-of-spec Vpp or programming-pulse widths will permanently damage the cell. 일반적인 애플리케이션

PIC12CE518/JW 적합 용도: 7 애플리케이션s: Universal Remote-Control Encoder, Battery-Powered Sensor Node, White-Goods User Interface Controller, Security-System Keypad Reader, Automotive Accessory Controller, Industrial Timer and Relay Sequencer, Development / Firmware Regression Platform.

📱

Universal Remote-Control Encoder

The PIC12CE518/JW's 768-byte EPROM, 4 MHz core, and on-chip 16-byte EEPROM suit it for low-cost infrared or RF remote-control transmitters. Its single-cycle 1 us instruction time is fast enough to bit-bang standard RC5, NEC, or proprietary 38 kHz carrier protocols from GP0/GP1 with no external UART. The on-chip EEPROM lets the encoder remember learned device codes and pairing keys across battery swaps, eliminating a serial EEPROM. The 5-I/O pin count fits a 3x4 keypad matrix plus an IR LED driver with one spare line for status LED. Sleep current in the microamp range keeps coin-cell remote controls alive for years.

🔋

Battery-Powered Sensor Node

The PIC12CE518/JW fits battery-powered sensor nodes where its 3.0-5.5 V supply range accepts a 3 V lithium coin cell or two AA cells, and its low microamp sleep current extends battery life to multi-year timeframes. The internal 25-byte RAM buffers a handful of ADC-free sensor readings, while the 16-byte EEPROM retains calibration constants and node ID across power cycles. Its hardware USART/SPI on GP0/GP1 talks to external digital sensors like the TMP36 or DS18B20 with no extra logic. The watchdog timer with its own RC oscillator resets the MCU if the firmware locks up in the field. Windowed EPROM aids prototype firmware regression during the design phase.

🏭

White-Goods User Interface Controller

The PIC12CE518/JW is a typical choice for user-interface controllers in washing machines, dishwashers, and microwave ovens, where its 5-I/O pin map drives a 7-segment LED display and scans a 4x4 keypad matrix via charlieplexing. The 4 MHz CPU executes deterministic scan loops in well under 1 ms, ensuring flicker-free LED multiplexing. The on-chip EEPROM stores user-set programs (delicates, heavy-duty, sanitize) that survive power-loss and brown-outs. The integrated watchdog timer recovers from ESD-induced firmware lockups on the front-panel traces. Its wide 3-5.5 V supply accepts the rectified 5 V rail common in white-goods SMPS designs.

🔒

Security-System Keypad Reader

In a wired security keypad the PIC12CE518/JW scans a 3x4 matrix and validates PIN codes against the 16-byte on-chip EEPROM-resident master code, eliminating the need for an external serial EEPROM. The 1 us instruction cycle gives a sub-millisecond debounce time, so key presses feel responsive even with multiple keys held. Sleep mode plus the watchdog timer let the keypad draw microamps during standby and wake on the first key interrupt. The USART/SPI on GP0/GP1 connects to the alarm-panel bus with only a line driver. The wide 3-5.5 V supply accepts both legacy 5 V and modern 3.3 V alarm panels.

🚗

Automotive Accessory Controller

Although the standard PIC12CE518/JW is commercial grade (0C to +70C), the same die in industrial-temperature variants (PIC12CE518-04I/JW) supports under-dash automotive accessory controllers for window lifts, mirror adjustments, and interior lighting. Its 5-I/O pins drive MOSFET gates through the GP outputs, and the on-chip EEPROM remembers end-of-travel calibration. The watchdog timer recovers from automotive load-dump transients that disrupt the MCU clock. The wide supply range tolerates the 9-16 V vehicle rail after pre-regulation to 5 V. Microchip's automotive-grade PIC16F equivalent is preferred for new OEM designs.

⏱️

Industrial Timer and Relay Sequencer

The PIC12CE518/JW's 8-bit hardware timer with 8-bit prescaler gives the part enough resolution to time events from 1 us to several seconds, which makes it a low-cost choice for industrial time-delay relays and pump sequencers. Its 5-I/O pins drive a status LED, a start button, a relay coil via a MOSFET, and two sensor inputs. The 16-byte EEPROM stores the user-selected delay constant and sequence step count, surviving power-cycle reconfigurations. The watchdog timer prevents a software lockup from leaving a relay latched indefinitely. Its through-hole CERDIP body tolerates conformal coating and the vibration of an industrial enclosure.

🧪

Development / Firmware Regression Platform

The windowed CERDIP package is the single most important reason engineers still specify PIC12CE518/JW: the quartz window lets a UV lamp erase the EPROM die and re-program the part hundreds of times during firmware iteration. With a typical EPROM erase time of 20-30 minutes under a UV-C source, development cycles are slow but reusable, making the JW part a hardware-development workhorse. The PIC12CE518/JW is used in Microchip's own PRO MATE II socket programming fixtures and in legacy ICE-2000 emulator pods. Once firmware is locked, the same silicon is re-ordered in plastic OTP (PIC12CE518-04/P) for production.

What type of program memory does the PIC12CE518/JW use?
The PIC12CE518/JW stores program code in 768 bytes of UV-erasable EPROM, organized as 512 x 12-bit words. According to Microchip's device family documentation, the EPROM is housed in a windowed CERDIP package so engineers can erase and re-program the part during prototyping using UV light. Production builds normally migrate to the OT (one-time-programmable) plastic DIP or the PIC12F629 flash equivalent once firmware is stable.
How much RAM and EEPROM does the PIC12CE518/JW have?
The PIC12CE518/JW provides 25 bytes of general-purpose RAM and 16 bytes of on-chip EEPROM for non-volatile data. The 16-byte EEPROM block is one of the defining features of the CE family; it lets the firmware persist calibration constants, channel identifiers, or usage counters without an external serial EEPROM. Endurance is rated for 1 million erase/write cycles per byte, with data retention of more than 40 years per the device family specification.
What is the maximum clock frequency and supply voltage of PIC12CE518/JW?
The PIC12CE518/JW operates from 3.0 V to 5.5 V and runs the PIC core at up to 4 MHz. At 4 MHz the device executes one instruction per clock cycle for a 1 microsecond instruction time. This combination of wide supply range and 4 MHz clock makes the part compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V system rails, simplifying integration into mixed-voltage designs. Always verify that Vdd stays within 3.0-5.5 V during in-circuit serial programming.
Does PIC12CE518/JW have an internal oscillator?
The PIC12CE518/JW does not include a precision internal oscillator like modern PIC12F parts; it relies on an external RC network or crystal/ceramic resonator on the OSC1/OSC2 pins. The on-chip watchdog timer uses its own dedicated internal RC oscillator so the WDT continues running even when the main clock is stopped in sleep mode. Designers wanting a calibrated internal oscillator should consider the PIC12F629 flash successor, which integrates a 4 MHz internal RC.
Where to buy PIC12CE518/JW online and what is the price?
The PIC12CE518/JW is listed in stock at distributor databases with around 2,848 pieces reported by broker channels as of 2026-09-15; typical qty-1 pricing is in the USD 7.50-8.50 range based on those listings. Microchip itself designates the part obsolete and recommends PIC12F629 as the modern drop-in replacement. Always request a current quote, since windowed CERDIP parts are niche stock and lead times fluctuate.
What is the lead time and stock status for PIC12CE518/JW?
As of 2026-09-15 the PIC12CE518/JW is officially obsolete from Microchip Technology and not recommended for new designs, but inventory does exist at broker and distributor channels (one source reported in stock). Lead time on these remaining stocks is typically quoted as 'to be confirmed' and ranges from same-day shipment on small quantities to multi-week delivery on large reels. Plan obsolescence mitigation by qualifying the PIC12F629-I/P or PIC12CE518-04/P as soon as possible.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC12CE518/JW?
The recommended drop-in replacement is PIC12CE518-04/P, which uses the same PIC12CE518 silicon die but in a plastic OTP DIP-8 package that does not require UV erasure. According to Microchip's product page, the modern flash successor is PIC12F629 (or PIC12F675) in PDIP-8, with the same pinout, more peripherals, and in-application re-programmability. For windowed-EPROM prototyping specifically, only the /JW suffix retains the quartz erase window; all other suffixes are one-time programmable.
PIC12CE518/JW vs PIC12C518/JW - what is the difference?
PIC12CE518/JW and PIC12C518/JW share the same 8-pin CERDIP windowed body, 768-byte EPROM program memory, 25-byte RAM, 5 I/O pins, and 4 MHz core. The single difference is the 16-byte on-chip EEPROM block present on the CE variant and absent on the C variant. If the application needs persistent calibration data, the CE version is required; otherwise the C version is electrically pin-compatible and interchangeable in the socket.
Can a modern PIC12F629 replace PIC12CE518/JW in an existing design?
Yes, the PIC12F629 in PDIP-8 (P) or SOIC-8 (SN) is pin-to-pin compatible with PIC12CE518/JW for the basic I/O set, and Microchip explicitly recommends it as the modern replacement. The PIC12F629 adds flash memory, an internal 4 MHz oscillator, a 10-bit ADC, and a comparator, but firmware must be rewritten and the configuration bits adapted. For byte-for-byte firmware reuse in a windowed EPROM flow, PIC12CE518-04/P (plastic OTP) is the closer path.
Where can I download the PIC12CE518/JW datasheet PDF?
The PIC12CE518/JW datasheet (Microchip document 40194E) is available as a free PDF download from Microchip's website. The document includes the DC characteristics, AC timing, EPROM programming specification, instruction set summary, and 8-pin DIP/windowed package drawings. Search 'PIC12CE518' on microchip.com or follow the device documentation link in the product page to retrieve the latest revision.
Where do I find the PIC12CE518/JW pinout?
The PIC12CE518/JW pinout for the 8-pin CDIP windowed package assigns: pin 1 to GP2/T0CKI, pin 2 to GP3/MCLR/Vpp, pin 3 to GP4/OSC2/CLKOUT, pin 4 to GP5/OSC1/CLKIN, pin 5 to Vss, pin 6 to GP0/ICSPDAT, pin 7 to GP1/ICSPCLK, and pin 8 to Vdd. Pins 6 and 7 also serve as the ICSP programming data and clock lines. The complete pin function table and DC characteristics are in the PIC12CE518 datasheet, document 40194E.
What is the operating temperature range of PIC12CE518/JW?
The PIC12CE518/JW carries Microchip's commercial temperature grade of 0C to +70C per the JW suffix ordering code convention. Industrial-temperature variants (-40C to +85C) of the same die are available as PIC12CE518-04I/JW or PIC12CE518-10I/JW from Microchip. For new designs that need extended temperature, consider the PIC12F629-I/P which is rated -40C to +85C and is recommended as the modern equivalent.
Is PIC12CE518/JW suitable for new product designs in 2026?
Microchip has marked the PIC12CE518/JW obsolete and recommends PIC12F629 (or PIC12F675) as the modern replacement, so it is not suitable for new high-volume product introductions. The windowed CERDIP part remains useful for engineering development, firmware regression testing, and legacy maintenance when an exact drop-in for an existing socket is needed. For new designs, start with PIC12F629 or PIC10F200-series flash MCUs to gain future-proof in-circuit re-programmability.
What is the recommended Microchip equivalent for the obsolete PIC12CE518/JW?
According to the Microchip product page for PIC12CE518, the recommended equivalent is PIC12F629, an 8-bit flash MCU in the same PDIP-8 form factor with pin-to-pin compatibility for the basic I/O set. The PIC12F629 adds 1 KWord of flash program memory, 64 bytes of RAM, 128 bytes of EEPROM, an internal 4 MHz oscillator, a comparator, and a 10-bit ADC. Firmware must be ported because the SFR map differs, but the tool chain (MPLAB X, MPASM, XC8) is identical to the PIC12C legacy family.

선택 가이드

Choose the PIC12CE518/JW only when you specifically need a windowed UV-erasable CERDIP 8-pin MCU for prototype firmware regression testing, an existing socket population, or a defense/industrial build that requires hermetic packaging. For new commercial designs, prefer the PIC12F629-I/P (active flash MCU, same 8-PDIP pinout, more peripherals). For a drop-in on the same die without UV erase capability, use the PIC12CE518-04/P (plastic OTP) or PIC12CE518-04I/P (industrial temperature range, -40C to +85C). If on-chip EEPROM is unnecessary, PIC12C518/JW or PIC12C518-04/P share the same pinout with 16 bytes less memory. All five alternatives in this page share the 8-pin PDIP or windowed CERDIP footprint, enabling PCB reuse across the family.

설계 노트

Windowed CERDIP PICs such as PIC12CE518/JW can be erased by exposure to UV light, including direct sunlight and fluorescent lighting. Store un-programmed and programmed parts in opaque tubes or IC tubes with the window covered. During PCB assembly, mask the window with opaque tape before flux/solder exposure, and remove it only after conformal coating is complete if the design will see UV light in service. Programmed parts that are inadvertently erased will fail verification and revert to 0x3FFF (blank) at every address.

Vdd must remain within 3.0 V to 5.5 V during normal operation and within Microchip's EPROM programming specification (Vdd 4.5 V to 5.5 V typical, Vpp 12.5 V to 13.5 V) during ICSP. Out-of-spec Vpp damages the EPROM cell permanently and is not recoverable. Add a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor close to Vdd (pin 8) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the board's power-entry point to suppress voltage transients during inrush. Brown-out detection should be enabled in the configuration word to hold the MCU in reset below 3.0 V.

Pin 3 (GP4/OSC2/CLKOUT) and pin 4 (GP5/OSC1/CLKIN) form the oscillator pair. Keep the trace loop between the resonator and these pins under 5 mm to avoid stray capacitance that could shift the oscillation frequency. For a 4 MHz ceramic resonator with built-in capacitors, no external caps are needed; for a crystal, add the load capacitors recommended in the datasheet. Place the MCLR pull-up (typically 10 kohm to Vdd) close to pin 2 to keep the reset line noise-free.

Estimated: at 5 V Vdd, 4 MHz clock, and all 5 I/O pins driving 20 pF loads at 50 percent duty, the dynamic supply current is approximately 2 mA, so power dissipation is 10 mW and the junction-temperature rise is negligible in the CERDIP package. Quiescent current drops below 1 uA in sleep mode, which is the dominant low-power design consideration rather than thermal. The ceramic DIP body tolerates continuous operating temperatures up to +70C (commercial grade) without derating.
