PIC16F1828-E/SS 개요

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1828-E/SS is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ mTouch™ 16F family, delivering 32 MHz CPU performance with 7 KB (4K x 14 words) of Flash program memory in a 20-pin SSOP package. The device integrates 256 bytes of SRAM, an internal 32 MHz oscillator, and Microchip's nanoWatt XLP extreme low-power features for battery-friendly operation.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small, self-contained computing device built around an 8-bit data bus architecture. Within the semiconductor hierarchy, the PIC16F1828 sits under: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor. The 8-bit class remains popular for cost-sensitive, deterministic control tasks such as user I/O handling, sensor sampling, simple communication, and motor control, where 32 MHz instruction throughput is more than adequate and 32-bit cores would add unnecessary cost and code-size overhead.

The PIC16F1828 features include integrated mTouch capacitive-touch sensing peripherals, 12-bit ADC with computation (ADC²), 5-bit DAC, multiple Enhanced USART, I²C/SPI, and PWM/SCCP modules. Core-independent CWG, CLC, and NCO peripherals offload logic from the CPU, allowing deterministic hardware-driven events. According to the manufacturer datasheet (Document 41419A), the part supports 1.8V-5.5V operation across -40 °C to +125 °C (E = extended) temperature range.

The PIC16F1828 architecture uses a Harvard RISC core with a 14-bit instruction word, providing deterministic instruction timing for real-time control loops. The nanoWatt XLP technology delivers sub-µA sleep currents enabling years of operation from a single coin cell. On-chip debugging is supported through PICkit™ 3 and MPLAB® ICD 3, eliminating external debug headers and reducing prototype cost.

Typical applications include capacitive touch user interfaces, IoT sensor nodes, low-power remote controls, small appliances, lighting controls, and battery-powered instrumentation. Designers select this part when code density, low power, and integrated analog peripherals outweigh the need for higher MIPS.

When designing with this MCU, ensure decoupling capacitors are placed close to VDD/VSS pairs and that the ICSP programming clock avoids signal integrity issues by isolating the programming pins from high-current traces. The E (extended) temperature grade is required for industrial and outdoor use; for cost-sensitive consumer applications the I (industrial) grade typically suffices.

설계 노트

Decouple VDD/VSS pairs with 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of each VDD pin, plus a bulk 1 µF to 10 µF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the supply entry point. The PIC16F1828-E/SS has multiple VDD/VSS pins; each pair must be independently decoupled. For battery applications using nanoWatt XLP sleep modes, place a 100 nF capacitor directly across the battery terminals to suppress impedance during transmit current spikes from the radio module. The PIC's internal voltage regulator (when applicable) requires a low-ESR bulk capacitor per the manufacturer datasheet (Document 41419A). Estimated: typical active current at 32 MHz and 3.3 V is ~5 mA, dropping to ~30 nA in sleep mode.

Route ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT (RB6/RB7) traces with care to avoid coupling from switching signals. Place 4.7 kΩ pull-ups on both ICSP lines for stable programming. Keep the ICSP header away from high-current traces (>100 mA) to prevent programming failures. For SSOP-20, route power traces on top layer with ground pour on the opposite side. Place decoupling capacitors on the same layer as the MCU with vias to internal ground plane. Avoid routing analog signals (RA0-RA5) across digital switching traces to prevent ADC² noise coupling. The exposed pad (if present on QFN variants; not on SSOP-20) must be soldered to a ground pad with thermal relief.

Do not exceed 5.5 V on any I/O pin or VDD - the absolute maximum rating is 6 V (transient). Avoid floating digital inputs by enabling internal weak pull-ups (WPUEN) or routing a 10 kΩ external pull-up/pull-down. The MCLR pin (RA3) must be tied to VDD through a 10 kΩ resistor for normal operation; leaving it floating causes reset behavior. For PICkit™ 3 programming, route ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT to dedicated pins (RB6/RB7) and avoid reassigning them in firmware. Configuration bits (CONFIG1/CONFIG2) must be set correctly - failure to disable the watchdog timer in development causes reset loops. The brown-out reset (BOR) must be enabled for robust operation; default-after-reset state is disabled.

For capacitive touch designs using mTouch, route touch electrode traces as short, narrow traces with ground guard rings on both sides to prevent false triggers from adjacent signals. Maintain 0.5 mm trace-to-trace spacing for touch traces. Place a 50 pF to 100 pF series resistor or ferrite bead on long touch traces (>50 mm) to attenuate EMI. Use a star ground topology for touch electrodes with a single-point connection to the MCU ground pin, avoiding shared ground return paths with switching circuits. The CTMU current source calibration must be performed in firmware using the internal bandgap reference for accurate touch measurements across temperature.
