PIC16F721T-I/SS 개요

The Microchip Technology PIC16F721T-I/SS is a low-power 8-bit PIC16F family flash microcontroller running at up to 16MHz instruction execution and housed in a 20-pin SSOP (5.30 mm) package on tape and reel. It integrates 7KB of self read/write flash program memory (4K x 14 words), 256 bytes of SRAM, and 128 bytes of non-volatile EEPROM data storage in a mid-range RISC architecture with 35 single-word instructions and 8 hardware stack levels.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, program memory, RAM, peripherals, and I/O, designed to execute embedded firmware in standalone systems. Within the broader category tree, the PIC16F721 sits at microcontroller -> embedded processor -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor, and is part of Microchip's PIC16 mid-range family that targets cost-sensitive, deterministic 8-bit applications. The I/SS suffix encodes an industrial operating temperature range (-40C to +85C) and the SSOP surface-mount package, while the trailing T indicates tape-and-reel packaging for high-volume assembly.

Key features include an internal 16MHz high-speed oscillator eliminating external crystals in many designs, a 12-channel 8-bit ADC, a CCP (Capture/Compare/PWM) module, AUSART, I2C and SPI serial peripherals, two 8-bit timers (TMR0/TMR2) and one 16-bit timer (TMR1), plus a watchdog timer, brown-out reset, and power-on reset for robust operation. I/O ports source and sink 25mA per pin, sufficient to drive LEDs and opto-couplers directly without external transistors. The device carries nanoWatt XLP technology for ultra-low sleep current, making it well suited to battery-powered applications.

The mid-range PIC16 core executes a 14-bit instruction word in 200ns at 20MHz maximum and supports both interrupt-driven and polled firmware models. The internal oscillator plus flexible clocking modes (INTOSC with multiple selectable speeds) reduce BOM cost, while the integrated ADC and CCP allow mixed-signal and motor-control tasks to be consolidated onto one chip. ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) allows firmware updates after PCB assembly.

Typical applications include low-cost consumer appliances, LED lighting controllers, battery chargers, sensor signal conditioning, small motor control (fans, pumps, valves), home automation nodes, and industrial control boards where low power, deterministic timing, and a small SSOP footprint are required. The industrial temperature grade and robust peripherals also suit it for HVAC controls and metering peripherals.

A key design consideration is supply voltage: the PIC16F721 operates from 1.8V to 5.5V depending on oscillator configuration, and designers must verify that the chosen clock source and ADC reference remain in range. Always allocate proper decoupling (100nF plus 10uF bulk) near VDD, and use the brown-out reset at a threshold matched to the minimum operating voltage.

⚡

Low-Cost Consumer Appliance Control

The PIC16F721T-I/SS fits low-cost consumer appliance controllers because it integrates 7KB flash, 256B SRAM, and an 8-bit 12-channel ADC sufficient to read temperature, humidity, and user-input knobs without external analog chips. Its nanoWatt XLP sleep current below 1 uA lets battery-powered or intermittently-powered appliances (electric toothbrushes, kitchen scales, fans) run for years on a single cell. The 16MHz internal oscillator removes the external crystal and its BOM cost, and 18 I/O pins support keypad scanning, LED control driving, and relay switching. Per the Microchip datasheet, the 25mA per-pin source/sink current can directly drive LEDs and small opto-couplers, removing external transistors in cost-sensitive designs.

💡

LED Lighting and Dimming Controllers

The PIC16F721T-I/SS is well-suited to LED lighting and dimming controllers thanks to its integrated CCP that can drive PWM channels up to the device's 16MHz peripheral clock, the 12-channel ADC for sensing ambient light and potentiometer dimming inputs, and nanoWatt XLP sleep mode that lets the controller enter standby between dimming events. According to the Microchip datasheet, the PWM resolution combined with the high-resolution timer chain provides smooth dimming without external PWM generators. Designers pair the MCU with a constant-current LED driver like the HV9910 or AL8860; the PIC16F721 commands the driver's CTRL/DIM pin while handling user inputs and status LEDs on its remaining I/O.

📱

Battery-Operated Sensor Nodes

The PIC16F721T-I/SS fits battery-operated sensor nodes because the nanoWatt XLP technology delivers sleep currents in the sub-microamp range while the 12-bit-precision-capable 8-bit ADC and 16MHz INTOSC wake the device on interrupt to take readings and transmit over AUSART. Per the datasheet, brown-out reset and watchdog timer protect against low-voltage lockups that are common on battery exhaustion, and the wide 1.8V to 5.5V operating range lets the same firmware run from 2xAA alkaline, 1x lithium, or 3.3V coin-cell rails. The 7KB flash comfortably fits a small RTOS or state-machine firmware plus remote-sensor protocol stacks. Xecor and DigiKey stock the part in tape-and-reel for high-volume wireless sensor production.

🏭

Small DC Motor and Fan Control

The PIC16F721T-I/SS drives small DC motor and fan controls using its CCP module for PWM speed regulation, the 12-channel ADC for back-EMF or tachometer feedback, and the 25mA per-pin I/O current that can directly drive logic-level N-FET gate drivers like the IRFML8244. According to the Microchip datasheet, the 16MHz instruction execution gives a 200ns loop time, fast enough for closed-loop PID control of small brushless or brush-type fans. Designers use the watchdog timer to detect stalled-motor conditions, brown-out reset to handle motor inrush current drops, and the AUSART to report fault codes to a host processor over RS-232 or RS-485.

🏭

HVAC and Industrial Control Peripherals

The PIC16F721T-I/SS fits HVAC and industrial control peripherals because the industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C), 25mA per-pin I/O drive, and robust reset features (BOR, POR, WDT) handle the noisy electrical and thermal environment of HVAC and factory-floor boards. Per the Microchip datasheet, the 12-channel 8-bit ADC scans thermistor and pressure-sensor inputs simultaneously with internal voltage references, while AUSART connects to a host PLC or HMI panel. The 7KB flash fits Modbus RTU slave firmware, and the integrated CCP drives triac firing or solid-state relay control loops. The SSOP-20 package suits space-constrained inside-the-cabinet designs.

🧩

Home Automation and IoT Edge Nodes

The PIC16F721T-I/SS fits home automation and IoT edge-node applications because the AUSART, I2C, and SPI peripherals connect directly to radio modules like the RN2483 LoRa or ESP-AT WiFi modules, while the 12-channel ADC reads analog sensors (light, motion, temperature) without external muxing. According to the datasheet, nanoWatt XLP sleep combined with brown-out reset enables multi-year battery life on PIR-style motion or door/window sensor nodes. The 7KB flash fits a Zigbee or LoRaWAN MAC stack with room for application logic, and the 25mA I/O drive directly energizes indicator LEDs and small piezo buzzers for local feedback.

🖥️

Smart Metering and Energy-Monitoring Peripherals

The PIC16F721T-I/SS fits smart-metering and energy-monitoring peripheral boards because the 12-channel 8-bit ADC, paired with external current-sense amplifiers like the MCP6L01, digitizes multiple CT and shunt channels at low cost, while AUSART relays measurements to the main meter's host processor. Per the Microchip datasheet, the CCP can drive calibration LED or buzzer indicators, and the brown-out reset protects against the brown-out events typical of AC-line disturbances. The 16MHz INTOSC accuracy of plus or minus 1 percent is sufficient for energy-aggregation work, and 128B of EEPROM stores calibration coefficients and tamper counters without external memory. The industrial temperature grade and SSOP-20 footprint suit inside-the-meter designs.

설계 노트

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 20) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the board power entry. According to the Microchip PIC16(L)F720/721 datasheet, VDD must remain within 1.8V to 5.5V and the brown-out reset must be configured above the minimum regulator voltage. For battery-powered designs using nanoWatt XLP, disable unused peripherals in firmware before entering sleep to keep quiescent current in the sub-microamp range.

Route the ICSP clock and data lines (ICSPCLK on RA1, ICSPDAT on RA0) with short, direct traces to the programming connector. The Microchip datasheet recommends a 4.7 k ohm pull-up on MCLR if not driven directly. Keep analog traces (ANx, VREF+-) away from digital switching signals like CCP1 PWM output, and place the VREF bypass capacitor next to the VREF+ pin to reduce ADC noise by up to 1 LSB.

Do not exceed the absolute maximum ratings in the datasheet - in particular, do not apply voltage to any I/O pin when VDD is below 1.6V or risk latch-up. The CCP1 output is multiplexed with RC3, so if a designer uses the CCP module they cannot use RC3 as a generic GPIO. Watchdog timer configuration word must be set to 'Off' for development boards where firmware may hang in debug; otherwise the WDT will reset the part unexpectedly during long debug pauses.

When using AUSART with the internal 16MHz HFINTOSC, the baud-rate error can exceed the plus or minus 2 percent UART-permissibility threshold at low-baud high-frequency combinations (for example 115200 baud at HFINTOSC). According to the datasheet, switch to a crystal or external clock when AUSART error exceeds plus or minus 1 percent, or use the AUSART auto-baud-detect feature. Place a 100 nF bypass on AVSS and VDD near the analog reference pins to reduce ADC reference noise.
