AD7683ACPZRL Overview
An analog-to-digital converter is a semiconductor device that converts a continuous-time, continuous-amplitude analog signal into a discrete-time, discrete-amplitude digital code. The PulSAR family from ADI uses charge-redistribution capacitor arrays and a successive-approximation register to perform bit-by-bit conversions, achieving a balance of low power consumption, high accuracy, and fast sampling. ADCs sit within the broader taxonomy of data converters -> mixed-signal ICs -> power management and signal chain semiconductors, and are typically used as the bridge between analog sensors and digital processors.
Key specifications include 16-bit resolution with no missing codes, ±1 LSB typical (B-grade) integral nonlinearity (INL), a pseudo-differential analog input range of 0 V to VREF (where VREF can equal VDD up to 5.5 V), 100 kSPS sampling rate, and SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE/DSP-compatible serial interface. The 8-lead LFCSP-WD with exposed pad provides low thermal resistance (~38 °C/W) suitable for compact industrial layouts.
The AD7683 uses a charge-redistribution DAC array combined with a precision comparator and SAR logic; this architecture delivers excellent DC accuracy and low noise at low power (typically 1.5 mW at 100 kSPS with 3 V supply). Pseudo-differential input simplifies single-ended sensor signal conditioning while preserving good common-mode rejection.
Typical applications include portable instrumentation, battery-powered data acquisition, industrial process control (4 mA to 20 mA loop digitization), precision weigh scales, and isolated sensor front-ends (with digital isolators such as ADuM1411). The wide supply range (2.7 V to 5.5 V) makes it compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V MCUs.
When designing with this device, place the 0.1 µF supply bypass capacitor within a few millimetres of the VDD pin and tie the exposed pad to a solid analog ground plane to minimize thermal resistance and digital switching noise coupling into the analog input.

Typical Applications
AD7683ACPZRL is suitable for 6 applications: Battery-Powered Data Acquisition Systems, Industrial Process Control (4-20 mA Loop Digitization), Precision Weigh Scales and Load Cell Digitization, Isolated Sensor Front-End (SPI over Digital Isolator), Portable Medical Monitoring Devices, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Analog Input Modules.
Battery-Powered Data Acquisition Systems
The AD7683ACPZRL's 1.5 mW typical power consumption at 100 kSPS from a 3 V supply makes it ideal for battery-powered data acquisition in portable instrumentation. Its pseudo-differential 0 V to VREF input range (with VREF tied to VDD) allows direct digitization of single-ended sensor outputs from thermocouples, strain gauges, and bridge sensors without front-end signal conditioning. The 8-LFCSP-WD 3 mm × 3 mm footprint supports high-density PCB layouts typical of handheld multimeters and wireless sensor nodes, while the SPI-compatible interface minimizes microcontroller GPIO usage.
Recommended
Industrial Process Control (4-20 mA Loop Digitization)
In industrial 4 mA to 20 mA current-loop digitizers, the AD7683ACPZRL digitizes the loop sense-resistor voltage with 16-bit accuracy and ±1 LSB typical INL, ensuring measurement resolution better than 0.001 mA across the full loop range. The wide 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply directly accepts the loop excitation voltage, and the exposed pad keeps self-heating below 0.5 °C even at continuous 100 kSPS throughput. Designers can combine the AD7683 with the ADuM1411 isolator for full galvanic barrier protection up to 2.5 kV RMS in PLC analog input modules.
Recommended
Precision Weigh Scales and Load Cell Digitization
Weigh scales demand both high resolution and excellent noise rejection, and the AD7683ACPZRL's 16-bit no-missing-codes performance with 1.4 LSB RMS noise delivers effective scales resolution down to 0.1 g when paired with a low-drift load cell. The pseudo-differential input handles single-excited bridge sensors directly, and the SPI/QSPI interface integrates easily with STM32 weighing-scale firmware stacks. AC excitation or chopper-stabilized excitation schemes pair naturally with the 100 kSPS throughput to reject 50 Hz/60 Hz line interference at the front end.
Recommended
Isolated Sensor Front-End (SPI over Digital Isolator)
The AD7683ACPZRL's SPI-compatible serial interface pairs seamlessly with the ADuM1411 quad-channel digital isolator to create isolated analog input channels for medical, industrial, or motor-drive applications. The isolated SPI bus supports up to 25 MHz SCLK, preserving the full 100 kSPS throughput across the isolation barrier. The compact 8-LFCSP-WD footprint fits easily on the high-voltage side of an isolated PCB, while the low 1.5 mW power dissipation minimizes transformer winding current requirements on the isolated power supply.
Recommended
Portable Medical Monitoring Devices
In portable patient monitors and pulse oximeters, the AD7683ACPZRL digitizes photodiode current-sense outputs with 16-bit resolution at 100 kSPS, enabling accurate SpO2 and heart-rate measurements from low-level optical signals. The 1.5 mW typical power consumption from 3.3 V supply preserves battery life in wearable form factors, while the small 8-LFCSP-WD 3 mm × 3 mm package fits inside finger-clip or wrist-watch enclosures. The wide 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply range also supports direct Li-ion battery operation without LDO losses.
Recommended
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Analog Input Modules
The AD7683ACPZRL is well-suited to PLC analog input modules where multiple channels must be digitized rapidly with high accuracy. Multiplexing several analog channels through an ADG708 8:1 switch and feeding the AD7683's pseudo-differential 0 V to VREF input allows direct digitization of ±10 V signals via external divider networks. The SPI bus aggregates multiple AD7683 chips to a single microcontroller via chip-select lines, supporting modular 4-channel or 8-channel PLC cards without complex analog signal chains.

Design Notes
Place a 0.1 µF X7R or X5R ceramic bypass capacitor as close as possible (within 3 mm) to the VDD pin and tie the exposed pad (EP) directly to the analog ground plane with multiple thermal vias. According to the AD7683 datasheet, a poor ground connection to the EP will degrade linearity and increase digital switching noise coupling into the analog input. Use separate analog and digital ground regions joined at a single point to prevent ground-loop currents from the SPI bus interfering with IN+.
Do not drive the REF pin with a high-impedance reference source. According to the AD7683 datasheet, the REF input draws transient charge during each conversion (charge redistribution architecture); a reference with insufficient drive strength will cause gain errors and INL degradation. Use the ADR4525 or ADR4550 low-noise references, or buffer the reference with an op-amp such as the AD8605 if your chosen reference has output impedance above 1 Ω at DC.
Keep SPI traces short and route the SCK trace away from IN+ and IN- analog traces to avoid digital clock feedthrough. According to the AD7683 datasheet, SCLK edge rates can couple into the analog input if traces run parallel for more than 5 mm. Add a small RC filter (100 Ω + 100 pF) on the SCK line near the ADC if noise coupling is observed, or use lower drive-strength GPIO settings on the microcontroller SCLK pin to reduce edge rates.
Estimated: at 3 V VDD and 100 kSPS continuous throughput, power dissipation is approximately 1.5 mW, with self-heating under 0.05 °C. At 5 V VDD with maximum SPI clock frequency, dissipation rises to ~5 mW and self-heating to ~0.2 °C using the 8-LFCSP-WD θJA of 38 °C/W. For battery-powered designs running below 10 kSPS, the AD7683 power scales roughly linearly with throughput, dropping to ~150 µW at 1 kSPS.
Route the analog and digital grounds on separate copper pours joined at a single point under the EP, and surround IN+ with a guard trace tied to GND to minimize leakage and noise pickup on the high-impedance analog input. According to the AD7683 datasheet, IN+ leakage current is ~1 nA over temperature; a dirty PCB surface near IN+ can introduce several µA of leakage that manifests as offset drift over temperature.
