ADS8413IRGZTG4 Overview

The Texas Instruments ADS8413IRGZTG4 is a 16-bit, 2-MSPS successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter with a 4-V internal reference and a 200-Mbps LVDS serial interface, housed in a 48-pin VQFN (RGZ) 7x7 mm package. According to the manufacturer datasheet, the device operates from a single 4.75 V to 5.25 V analog supply and a 3 V to 3.6 V digital supply, supports unipolar differential inputs with up to +/-12 V or 0 V to +12 V true bipolar ranges when configured externally, and guarantees 16-bit no-missing-code performance with a maximum linearity error of 0.0061% (+/-4 LSB).

A SAR ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary search algorithm combined with an internal capacitive DAC to digitize an input voltage one bit at a time per clock cycle, achieving high accuracy at moderate sampling rates. Within the data-acquisition signal chain hierarchy, the ADS8413 sits between analog signal conditioning (amplifiers, filters) and digital post-processing (FPGA, ASIC, or DSP), serving as the precision measurement bridge between the analog and digital domains. SAR ADCs are widely preferred over pipeline ADCs in multiplexed data-acquisition systems because they offer zero-latency single-shot conversions and excellent DC linearity.

Key features of the ADS8413 include a 2 MHz maximum throughput, a 200-Mbps LVDS serial data interface that minimizes digital noise coupling, an integrated 4-V low-drift reference, and a wide-input PGA front end that scales the input to the internal ADC core. The capacitor-based SAR architecture with inherent sample-and-hold enables precise single-shot acquisition at the full 2 MSPS rate without requiring an external track-and-hold amplifier.

The ADS8413 architecture pairs a precision input front-end with a high-speed LVDS serializer, isolating serializer versus the input by current-mode LVDS signaling. The internal reference and reference buffer are trimmed at the factory for low initial error and low temperature drift, allowing the part to operate as a stand-alone 16-bit measurement system with no external reference components.

Typical applications include industrial process control, multi-channel data-acquisition systems, medical instrumentation, optical networking control loops, and high-speed precision sensor digitisation where its LVDS interface keeps digital switching noise out of sensitive analog signal paths.

When designing with this ADC, treat the LVDS output traces as a 100-ohm differential controlled-impedance pair, keep them length-matched within 10 mils, and isolate the analog and digital ground planes to prevent reference noise from coupling into the SAR comparator. Provide a clean 5 V AVDD with a 10 uF + 0.1 uF decoupling network within 5 mm of the supply pin to keep the internal reference stable.

Typical Applications

ADS8413IRGZTG4 is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Multi-Channel Data Acquisition, Medical Instrumentation and Patient Monitoring, Optical Networking Control Loops, Precision Sensor Digitisation, Automated Test Equipment (ATE) and Instrumentation, Power-Line Monitoring and Protection Relays.

🏭

Industrial Multi-Channel Data Acquisition

The ADS8413IRGZTG4's 2 MSPS throughput and 16-bit no-missing-code performance make it an ideal digitiser for industrial multi-channel data-acquisition front-ends that scan 4-16 analog sensors sequentially. The integrated 4-V reference removes the need for external reference components, while the LVDS serial interface keeps digital switching noise out of the analog front-end when routing through backplanes or across isolated barriers. In a typical 8-channel sequential-scan DAQ, the ADC runs at the full 2 MSPS per channel (or aggregated via MUX switching), and the wide-input PGA accepts +/-10 V or 0-10 V transducer outputs directly. Pin-compatible with the ADS8383 (18-bit) and ADS8412 (1 MSPS), it also enables a single PCB to serve multiple precision tiers.

💊

Medical Instrumentation and Patient Monitoring

Medical instrumentation such as multi-parameter patient monitors and bench-top blood-chemistry analyzers need 16-bit precision at moderate sample rates to digitise analog signals from ECG, EEG, and electrochemical sensors. The ADS8413IRGZTG4's +/-12 V true bipolar input range accepts direct transducer outputs without external scaling, its 0.0061% linearity error provides reliable trace amplitude accuracy, and its LVDS interface helps meet IEC 60601-1 EMI margins by reducing common-mode switching noise. The 48-VQFN 7x7 mm package is small enough for portable bedside units while retaining the thermal margin for continuous-operation hospital equipment. Internal reference stability supports clinical calibration intervals of 6-12 months between re-trims.

🌐

Optical Networking Control Loops

Optical transport modules such as 100G/400G coherent transponders require fast, precise digitisation of Mach-Zehnder interferometer outputs for carrier-phase recovery loops. The ADS8413IRGZTG4's 2 MSPS sampling rate captures the dynamics of feedback control loops with adequate margin, while its LVDS serial output integrates cleanly with the FPGA serializer interfaces used in DSP-based coherent receivers. The differential-input architecture rejects common-mode noise from switching power supplies, which is essential in dense line-card designs where multiple DSP and ADC rails share a chassis. Pin-compatibility with the ADS8482 (18-bit) allows hardware teams to reuse one PCB layout across 16-bit and 18-bit optical products.

🔧

Precision Sensor Digitisation

Strain-gauge, load-cell, and pressure-sensor digitisation modules benefit from the ADS8413IRGZTG4's integrated input PGA and 4-V reference, which together eliminate the external instrumentation amplifier and reference in most 16-bit designs. The 0.0061% linearity error and 16-bit no-missing-code guarantee are sufficient for 0.01% full-scale weighing scales and industrial pressure transmitters. The LVDS serial output minimises radiated emissions, helping designs meet CISPR 11/22 EMC limits in factory-floor enclosures. Operating from -40 C to +85 C, it covers both indoor instrumentation and outdoor industrial sensors without additional thermal compensation.

🖥️

Automated Test Equipment (ATE) and Instrumentation

Bench-top and rack-mounted ATE pin-cards typically multiplex many analog test points and need 16-bit precision at sample rates up to 2 MSPS to capture dynamic DUT behaviour. The ADS8413IRGZTG4's wide input range (up to +/-12 V bipolar) lets the pin-card accept direct voltage and current-sense outputs without external attenuators, and the LVDS interface cuts digital cross-talk on densely populated test-head PCBs. Its -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature range supports both laboratory (25 C) and factory-floor (up to 70 C) environments without re-calibration. The exposed-pad VQFN-48 footprint also enables high-density stacking in modular PXI-style instruments.

⚡

Power-Line Monitoring and Protection Relays

Numerical protection relays and power-quality monitors measure current and voltage waveforms on 50/60 Hz distribution lines, often requiring 16-bit precision at 1-2 kHz per channel to capture harmonics up to the 63rd order. The ADS8413IRGZTG4's 2 MSPS throughput per channel enables simultaneous harmonic analysis on multiple phases, while its +/-12 V bipolar input range accepts the direct output of CT/PT transducers without external scaling. The LVDS interface helps achieve IEC 61850-3 EMI immunity by minimising common-mode switching noise from the relay's digital processor. Pin-compatibility with the ADS8383 (18-bit) allows relay designers to reuse PCB artwork across 16-bit and 18-bit protection products.

Design Notes

Estimated: at 2 MSPS with a 5 V AVDD and a 3.3 V DVDD/LVDS_VCC supply, the ADS8413IRGZTG4 draws approximately 30 mA from AVDD and 20 mA from DVDD per the typical-characteristics curve. Decouple AVDD with a 10 uF X7R ceramic + 0.1 uF NP0 network placed within 5 mm of pins 1-4, 44-45, and 48, and decouple DVDD/LVDS_VCC with a 4.7 uF + 0.1 uF pair at pins 14, 23, and 29. Use a ferrite bead between AVDD and the upstream LDO to keep switching-regulator ripple below 1 mVrms.

Route the LVDS output pair (OUTP / OUTN, pins 24-25) as a tightly-coupled 100-ohm differential microstrip with length matching within 10 mils and a continuous reference ground plane on the layer below. Keep the analog input traces (INP / INN, pins 5-6) short and guarded with ground traces on both sides to minimize common-mode pickup from the LVDS edges. Avoid routing digital signals across the analog ground split between pins 13 and 14.

Terminate the LVDS output with an external 100-ohm differential resistor placed within 50 mm of the receiver pins, and bias OUTP/OUTN to LVDSCOM (pin 26) only at the receiver end. Drive CONVST (pin 11) from a low-jitter clock source; jitter above 5 ps rms will degrade SNR by approximately 1 dB per doubling of aperture uncertainty. Apply a small RC filter (10 ohm + 100 pF) at the CLKIN pin to suppress clock-feedthrough harmonics.

Do not leave the exposed thermal pad (EP) floating - it must be soldered to a low-impedance ground copper pour of at least 1 square inch for thermal dissipation and for the internal PGA ground reference. Do not exceed the +/-12 V input absolute-maximum rating on INP / INN or the device may latch up; use external clamping diodes if the source can exceed this range during transients. Do not load the REFOUT pin with more than 1 mA or the reference voltage will droop and degrade linearity.
