ADUM1401CRWZ Overview

The Analog Devices ADUM1401CRWZ is a quad-channel digital isolator based on Analog Devices iCoupler technology, providing 4 unidirectional isolation channels at up to 90 Mbps data rate in a 16-pin wide-body SOIC package with 2500 Vrms isolation. It combines high-speed CMOS and monolithic air-core transformer technology, delivering performance characteristics that outperform optocoupler-based alternatives by eliminating LEDs and photodiodes from the signal path.

A digital isolator is an interface IC that transfers logic-level signals across a galvanic isolation barrier using magnetic, capacitive, or optical coupling rather than a direct electrical connection. Digital isolators sit at the boundary between hazardous and safe voltage domains, isolating high-voltage transients (such as motor drive switching edges, grid-line transients, or medical-patient leakage paths) from low-voltage logic that would otherwise be damaged. In the broader component hierarchy, the ADUM1401 belongs to the digital isolator category, which is itself a sub-category of interface ICs and broader signal-conditioning/isolation devices used in power management, motor control, and industrial communication systems.

Key features include 90 Mbps guaranteed data rate (CRWZ grade), 25 kV/µs common-mode transient immunity (CMTI), 32 ns typical propagation delay, 2.7 V to 5.5 V wide supply range on both sides, and per-channel current draw of 1.0 mA at 0-2 Mbps / 31 mA at 100 Mbps at 5 V. Default channel direction is 3-out / 1-in (the ADUM1400 variant reverses to 0-out / 4-in while ADUM1402 swaps mid-channel orientation). The wide-body 16-SOIC (RWZ) package provides the required creepage/clearance for 2500 Vrms reinforced isolation per UL 1577 and IEC 60747-17.

The architecture uses four separate transformer channels monolithically integrated on-chip, driven by an internal oscillator and edge-detect encoder on the primary side and decoded by a comparator/latch network on the secondary side. Refresh pulses are sent periodically to maintain DC correctness, with explicit one-cycle latency per channel direction.

Typical applications include RS-232/RS-485 transceiver isolation, SPI interface isolation between MCU and ADC, isolated gate-drive signal paths in motor drives and solar inverters, industrial 4-20 mA loop isolation, and medical equipment patient-isolation barriers.

Designers should provide 0.1 µF bypass capacitors on each VDD pin placed within 2 mm of the IC, observe wide-body SOIC PCB creepage of at least 8 mm to maintain rated isolation, and consider ADUM1400/ADUM1402 if different default channel orientations are required.

This page synthesizes cross-brand drop-in equivalents, parametric comparison against the ADUM1400/1402 family, and practical PCB creepage/decoupling guidance not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet.

Typical Applications

ADUM1401CRWZ is suitable for 6 applications: Isolated SPI Interface for MCU-to-ADC Link, Isolated RS-485 / Industrial Fieldbus Communication, Isolated Gate-Drive Signal Paths for Motor Drives and Solar Inverters, Medical Equipment Patient-Isolation Barriers, Isolated 4-20 mA Industrial Current Loop Transmitter, Solar PV String Monitoring and Inverter Communication.

🧩

Isolated SPI Interface for MCU-to-ADC Link

The ADUM1401CRWZ is purpose-built for SPI isolation between a host microcontroller and a remote ADC across a 2.5 kV reinforced isolation barrier. Its default 3-out / 1-in channel direction maps naturally to MOSI, SCK, and CS outputs and a single MISO return. With 90 Mbps guaranteed data rate, it supports SPI clocks above 22 MHz; the 32 ns typical propagation delay means only one extra clock cycle of latency. Design tip: tie unused input pins on the secondary side to VDD2 through 10 kΩ or to GND2 through 10 kΩ per datasheet recommendations to prevent false triggering from noise pickup on floating inputs.

🏭

Isolated RS-485 / Industrial Fieldbus Communication

In RS-485, CAN, Modbus, and Profibus systems, the ADUM1401CRWZ isolates the transceiver IC from the bus-controller MCU, breaking ground loops and protecting logic from ±15 kV ESD and grid-line transients. The 25 kV/µs CMTI rating ensures the isolator does not latch up or corrupt data when the bus side sees fast switching edges from adjacent motor inverters or relays. Its 16-SOIC wide-body footprint provides the 8 mm creepage needed for IEC 61131-2 industrial control certification. For half-duplex RS-485, two channels handle driver-enable and RX/TX switching while the remaining two carry differential data.

🏭

Isolated Gate-Drive Signal Paths for Motor Drives and Solar Inverters

The ADUM1401CRWZ drives IGBT/MOSFET gate signals in 3-phase motor drives, solar string inverters, and EV traction inverters where the low-voltage MCU domain must remain isolated from the 600-1200 V DC bus. Its 25 kV/µs CMTI withstands the very fast dV/dt edges of SiC MOSFETs switching at 50-100 kHz. The 3-out / 1-in configuration delivers PWM, EN, and FAULT signals to the gate driver while returning a single fault feedback. Pair with isolated gate drivers like ADuM4135 or Si8271 for complete reinforced isolation per IEC 61800-5-1.

💊

Medical Equipment Patient-Isolation Barriers

In patient-connected medical devices (ECG, EEG, infusion pumps, blood pressure monitors), the ADUM1401CRWZ provides 2500 Vrms isolation that exceeds the 1500 V AC patient-isolation requirement of IEC 60601-1 for body-protected (BF) and cardiac-protected (CF) applied parts. The wide-body SOIC-16 package is well-suited for compact handheld designs. The high CMTI rating prevents false triggering from fast electrosurgical or defibrillator transients in the operating-room environment. Use the digital isolator alongside an isolated DC-DC converter and isolated op-amp for complete patient-isolated analog signal acquisition.

🌐

Isolated 4-20 mA Industrial Current Loop Transmitter

The ADUM1401CRWZ isolates the digital section of a 4-20 mA HART or analog current-loop transmitter from the loop side, allowing a low-voltage microcontroller to communicate with the loop driver without exposing the controller to field-side transients. Three channels carry SPI/configuration data and one channel returns loop-side fault or HART signal back to the MCU. The 16-SOIC wide-body footprint simplifies through-hole-replacement of legacy optocoupler-based designs, where PCB land patterns typically already match SOIC-16 footprints. Combined with an isolated DC-DC like LT8491IUKJ, it enables a fully 2.5 kV-reinforced signal chain.

⚡

Solar PV String Monitoring and Inverter Communication

In string-monitoring units inside 1500 V DC solar inverters, the ADUM1401CRWZ isolates SPI bus traffic between the high-voltage string-monitoring ADC and the low-voltage inverter controller. With 25 kV/µs CMTI, it tolerates the aggressive dV/dt of nearby IGBTs switching at 16-32 kHz. The wide-body 16-SOIC package provides the required creepage at altitude for IEC 62109 solar inverter certification. Three channels drive SDO/SCK/CS while one returns MISO - making the part a perfect pin-compatible swap for optocoupler-based designs in legacy PV monitoring products.

What is the difference between ADUM1401CRWZ and ADUM1400CRWZ?
Both are quad-channel digital isolators in the same 16-SOIC wide-body package, but the ADUM1401CRWZ defaults to 3-out / 1-in channel direction while the ADUM1400CRWZ provides 4 channels in the opposite direction (0-out / 4-in). They share identical voltage, isolation, and CMTI ratings, making them pin-compatible drop-in replacements when channel direction must change.
What is the difference between ADUM1401CRWZ and ADUM1402CRWZ?
The ADUM1401CRWZ has channel direction 3-out / 1-in while the ADUM1402CRWZ provides 2-out / 2-in. Both share identical electrical specs (2500 Vrms, 90 Mbps, 25 kV/µs CMTI, 16-SOIC wide body) and are drop-in compatible in the same PCB footprint, so you can swap based solely on required channel orientation.
What is the difference between ADUM1401CRWZ and ISO7741DW (Texas Instruments)?
Both are 4-channel digital isolators in wide-body SOIC-16 with reinforced isolation. The ADUM1401CRWZ delivers 90 Mbps and uses iCoupler (transformer) technology with 32 ns propagation delay, while the ISO7741DW from TI offers 100 Mbps using capacitive coupling with similar 13-16 ns delay. They are pin-compatible in the SOIC-16 wide-body footprint and can usually be interchanged with attention to default channel direction.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for ADUM1401CRWZ?
The closest cross-brand drop-in equivalent is the Texas Instruments ISO7741FCDW (or ISO7741DW), which shares the wide-body SOIC-16 footprint, 4-channel configuration, and reinforced isolation rating. ISO7741FCDW adds 100 Mbps support but uses capacitive coupling instead of iCoupler transformer technology. Both are sourced from the ADUM1401CRWZ cross-reference database.
When should I choose ADUM1401CRWZ over ADUM1400CRWZ?
Choose ADUM1401CRWZ when your design requires 3 outgoing and 1 incoming channel direction (e.g., SPI CS/MOSI/SCK outputs + MISO input from a remote ADC), which is the most common MCU-to-isolated-peripheral configuration. Choose ADUM1400CRWZ for 4 incoming channels (e.g., GPIO feedback from a high-voltage side). Both parts share the same PCB footprint and electrical ratings, so the choice is purely about channel direction.
Is ADUM1401CRWZ suitable for SPI isolation?
Yes, the ADUM1401CRWZ is well suited for SPI interface isolation at clock rates up to ~22 MHz (limited by the 32 ns propagation delay). The default 3-out / 1-in direction maps cleanly to MOSI/SCK/CS outputs and MISO input. For higher SPI speeds above 25 MHz, consider the ADUM1401ARWZ (lower cost, 25 Mbps grade) is too slow; use ADUM1401CRWZ or upgrade to ADUM1411/ADUM1421.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ADUM1401CRWZ?
The best drop-in replacements for the ADUM1401CRWZ are the same-family Analog Devices parts ADUM1401BRWZ (10 Mbps grade, otherwise identical) and ADUM1401ARWZ (25 Mbps grade). For full cross-brand drop-in equivalents in the same wide-body SOIC-16 footprint, the Texas Instruments ISO7741FCDW (100 Mbps, capacitive coupling) is the most commonly substituted alternative.

Selection Guide

Choose the ADUM1401CRWZ when you need a 90 Mbps quad-channel digital isolator in the standard wide-body 16-SOIC footprint with default 3-out / 1-in channel direction optimized for SPI host applications. It is the right choice for SPI isolation above 22 MHz, isolated RS-485/RS-232, and isolated gate-drive signal paths in motor drives and solar inverters. Step down to ADUM1401ARWZ (25 Mbps) if your data rates are well below 10 Mbps and you need cost savings around 15-20%. Step down to ADUM1401BRWZ (10 Mbps) only for very slow signals like GPIO or push-button feedback. For different channel direction, swap to ADUM1400CRWZ (0-out / 4-in) or ADUM1402CRWZ (2-out / 2-in) - all three share the same PCB footprint. For cross-brand drop-in replacement from TI, the ISO7741FCDW provides 100 Mbps in the same wide-body SOIC-16 but uses capacitive coupling.

  • iCoupler transformer technology vs capacitive coupling in cross-brand (vs ISO7741FCDW (Texas Instruments))

Design Notes

Critical: place 0.1 µF bypass capacitors on each VDD1/VDD2 pin within 2 mm of the IC body, with traces directly to the corresponding GND pin. The wide-body 16-SOIC package has two VDD1 pins (1, 7) and two GND1 pins (2, 8) - both must be connected to maintain rated isolation. Maintain at least 8 mm creepage between side-1 and side-2 copper pours to preserve 2500 Vrms rating after PCB manufacturing tolerances.

Do not leave unused input pins floating. Per the ADuM1401 datasheet, unused VIA/VIB/VIC inputs must be tied to VDD1 through 10 kΩ or to GND1 through 10 kΩ to prevent false triggering from PCB noise pickup that can corrupt the channel's refresh logic. Similarly tie unused VOA/VOB/VOC outputs to VDD2 or GND2 through 10 kΩ to avoid driving capacitive loads without a defined state.

At data rates above 50 Mbps, place a 33 Ω series resistor on each output pin close to the IC to dampen transmission-line reflections on long PCB traces. Route signal traces as 50 Ω microstrip or stripline with continuous ground reference plane. Estimated: at 90 Mbps with 5 ns edge rates, trace stubs longer than 10 mm can cause 10% overshoot without series termination.

Design the PCB to allow the ADUM1401CRWZ to be replaced by ISO7741FCDW (TI) with no layout changes, in case of Analog Devices supply constraints. Both share the same wide-body 16-SOIC land pattern, pinout, and reinforced isolation rating. However, default channel direction (3-out/1-in) and output drive strength differ slightly - verify in the alternate datasheet before qualification.
