Typical Applications
INA237AIDGSR is suitable for 6 applications: Server and Data-Center Power Monitoring, Telecom 48V Power Distribution, Battery Management Systems, Industrial Automation and Motor Drives, Test and Measurement Equipment, IoT and Embedded Power Telemetry.
Server and Data-Center Power Monitoring
The INA237's -0.3 V to 85 V common-mode range and +/-50 uV offset make it ideal for 48 V server rack power rails where energy efficiency telemetry is mandatory. Placed on the high side of each server PSU output with a low-ohm shunt, it streams current, voltage, and power over I2C to the baseboard controller. The alert pin provides fast overcurrent flagging without continuous polling, reducing bus traffic while the 310 uA quiescent current keeps standby overhead negligible.
Recommended
Telecom 48V Power Distribution
Telecom equipment runs on -48 V or +48 V buses, and the INA237's 85 V common-mode tolerance covers both polarities with margin. Its +/-0.3% gain error supports billing-grade power metering of line cards and rectifier outputs. The 16 programmable I2C addresses allow up to 16 monitors per shelf controller, while programmable averaging filters (up to thousands of samples) reduce noise for stable long-term energy accounting in central-office and 5G base-station power trees.
Recommended
Battery Management Systems
In battery packs, the INA237 measures pack current via high-side shunt sensing while withstanding up to 85 V of common-mode voltage, covering 12-cell to 18-cell lithium stacks. The +/-0.02 uV/degC offset drift keeps coulomb-counting accurate across the -40degC to +125degC automotive range. Paired with the BQ76952 battery monitor, the INA237 adds system-level power telemetry; its alert function detects overcurrent discharge events in hardware with microsecond-scale flagging for pack protection.
Recommended
Industrial Automation and Motor Drives
Industrial 24 V buses and motor-drive DC links benefit from the INA237's wide common-mode range and bidirectional +/-163.84 mV full-scale input, which captures both motoring and regenerative current. The 16-bit delta-sigma ADC with programmable averaging resolves small load changes for predictive-maintenance analytics, while the alert pin supports hardware overcurrent trip thresholds. Its small VSSOP-10 footprint allows placement directly at the shunt inside dense drive enclosures.
Recommended
Test and Measurement Equipment
Bench power supplies, electronic loads, and USB power analyzers use the INA237 as a precision front-end: the +/-50 uV offset resolves microamp-level currents at low shunt drops, and the 16-bit ADC plus configurable conversion times (from fast transients to low-noise averaging) suit both dynamic capture and accurate DC metering. The 85 V input range covers USB PD EPR, 48 V, and legacy rails with one design, and the I2C interface integrates easily with MCU-based instrument control.
Recommended
IoT and Embedded Power Telemetry
Battery-powered IoT nodes use the INA237's 310 uA typical quiescent current and low supply requirement (2.7 V to 5.5 V) for always-on energy monitoring of solar chargers, load switches, and sensor rails. Adafruit and SparkFun offer INA237 breakout boards with Qwiic connectors, demonstrating straightforward integration with ESP32 and Arduino ecosystems via the ina2xx/Adafruit_INA237 libraries. Programmable averaging lets designers trade update rate against noise for long-battery-life telemetry duty cycles.

Key Differentiators
- 85 V common-mode range in a low-cost 16-bit monitor (vs INA226AIDGSR-Q1)
- Excellent offset stability for precision sensing (vs INA238AIDGSR)
- Upgrade path without redesign (vs INA228AIDGSR)
Design Notes
Use Kelvin (4-wire) connections from the shunt resistor directly to the IN+ and IN- pins. Parasitic trace resistance in series with the shunt creates gain error; even 1 milliohm of trace on a 2 milliohm shunt adds ~50% error. Route the sense traces as a differential pair away from switching nodes, per TI INA23x layout guidance in the datasheet PCB layout section.
Decouple the VS pin with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin. The VBUS input tolerates up to 85 V continuously, but add a series resistor and small capacitor filter if the rail carries switching spikes. Power the INA237 from a clean 2.7 V to 5.5 V logic rail; noisy supplies degrade the +/-50 uV offset performance.
Size the shunt so maximum load current stays within the +/-163.84 mV full-scale input; exceeding it clips readings and the alert may not report correctly. Select the shunt value based on minimum measurable current (offset-limited) versus maximum current (full-scale-limited) and use the higher +/-40.96 mV gain range only when shunt drop allows. Configure I2C pull-ups per bus capacitance; the ALERT pin is open-drain and needs a pull-up.
Compliance Information
