PIC18LF2610-I/SO Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF2610-I/SO is an 8-bit PIC18 flash microcontroller featuring 64 KB of program memory, 3968 bytes of RAM, and 25 digital I/O pins, operating up to 40 MHz from a 2.0-5.5 V supply in a 28-pin SOIC package. It integrates a 10-bit A/D converter with up to 11 channels, two analog comparators, two CCP/ECCP modules, a USART, an MSSP (SPI/I2C), and the standard PIC18 enhanced instruction set with 75 instructions and 83 with the extended opcode set.

An 8-bit microcontroller (microcontroller) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, Flash program memory, RAM, non-volatile EEPROM, and a rich set of peripherals (timers, ADC, communication interfaces) integrated on one die. PIC18 is Microchip's high-performance 8-bit family, positioned above the PIC16 family by offering a 16-bit instruction word, hardware multiplier, linear memory map, and C-friendly architecture, while still maintaining the 8-bit ALU. Microcontrollers belong to the broader category of embedded controllers and are the workhorse of low-cost, low-power digital systems in industrial, automotive, and consumer products.

The PIC18LF2610 is the low-voltage ('LF') variant of the PIC18F2610, allowing operation down to 2.0 V (versus 4.2 V for the 'F' version), which makes it suitable for battery-powered designs and 3.3 V systems. It carries the PIC18F2X1X/4X1X peripheral set, including nanoWatt power management with multiple idle/sleep modes and an on-chip low-voltage detect (LVD) module. The 'SO' suffix indicates a 28-pin SOIC (300-mil body) industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C) package.

Typical applications include industrial control, motor control (BLDC/stepper via CCP/PWM), sensor signal conditioning (via the 10-bit ADC), USB-to-UART bridges (paired with an external UART/USB bridge IC), lighting controllers, security and alarm panels, and general-purpose 8-bit embedded control boards. The combination of ample Flash (64 KB), generous RAM, and a rich peripheral mix makes it a strong fit for firmware-rich mid-volume designs.

When designing with this part, ensure the in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) pins (RB6/RB7) are brought to a programming header and that VDD decoupling uses 100 nF + bulk capacitance close to the package. Choose the 'LF' variant explicitly when the supply rail is below 4.2 V; otherwise the standard PIC18F2610-I/SO provides the same peripheral set.

This page synthesizes real-time distributor pricing, cross-vendor drop-in alternatives from the Microchip PIC18F2X1X/4X1X family, and practical PCB/firmware design notes not consolidated in the datasheet alone.

Aplicações típicas

PIC18LF2610-I/SO é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Motor Control (BLDC / Stepper), Sensor Signal Conditioning Front End, Lighting Controller (DALI / DMX / PWM Driver), Security and Alarm Panel, General-Purpose 8-bit Embedded Control Board, Battery-Operated Handheld Meter.

🏭

Industrial Motor Control (BLDC / Stepper)

The PIC18LF2610-I/SO is well suited to industrial motor control because its ECCP module delivers hardware PWM up to 10-bit resolution at 40 MHz (10 MIPS), and its 10-bit A/D with up to 11 channels can sample back-EMF or current-shunt feedback for closed-loop commutation. With 64 KB Flash and 3968-byte RAM, it has room for sensorless BLDC or stepper acceleration profiles plus UART diagnostics. The wide 2.0-5.5 V supply lets it run directly from a 24 V->3.3 V step-down in industrial cabinets. The 28-SOIC footprint provides a small board area for inline motor drivers where the MCU sits next to the FET gate-driver.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning Front End

The PIC18LF2610-I/SO fits sensor-conditioning front ends for thermocouple, RTD, bridge and strain-gauge applications because its 10-bit A/D with 11 input channels can multiplex several sensors through one MCU, and the two on-chip analog comparators enable window comparators for alarm thresholds. The 3968-byte RAM supports circular DSP buffers for moving-average filtering, while the MSSP (SPI/I2C) can drive an external DAC or EEPROM for calibration data. Operating down to 2.0 V, the part is ideal for 2xAA-powered handheld meters where the standard F variant would not start. Engineers can drop the firmware into PIC18F2610-I/SO when supply exceeds 4.2 V.

💡

Lighting Controller (DALI / DMX / PWM Driver)

The PIC18LF2610-I/SO is a strong fit for digital lighting controllers (DALI, DMX-512, 0-10 V dimming) because its ECCP module provides PWM at frequencies and resolutions ideal for dim-to-warm or RGBW LED channels, and the USART implements DMX-512 or DALI hardware protocol layers. The 64 KB Flash is more than adequate for color-mixing firmware, ramp tables, and remote commands. The 28-SOIC footprint lets the MCU sit inline with the LED driver PCB. The LF supply range allows direct operation from a 3.3 V rail coming off a buck converter downstream of the AC-DC stage.

🎥

Security and Alarm Panel

The PIC18LF2610-I/SO is widely used in security/alarm panels because its 25 I/O pins can scan a 4x4 keypad matrix, drive a 16-character LCD via the MSSP/SPI, and monitor multiple zones (PIR, door contact, glass-break) through the 10-bit A/D and comparators. The 64 KB Flash is sufficient for event logging, while 3968-byte RAM handles real-time zone state. The 2.0-5.5 V LF range allows backup-battery (3.6 V LiSOCl2) operation during AC loss, with nanoWatt sleep dropping consumption below 100 uA for multi-year battery life.

🔧

General-Purpose 8-bit Embedded Control Board

The PIC18LF2610-I/SO is a flexible general-purpose 8-bit control board MCU, suitable for educational kits, hobby platforms, and mid-volume OEM controllers. Its peripheral mix (1 USART, 1 MSSP SPI/I2C, 2 CCP/ECCP, 2 comparators, 11-channel 10-bit A/D) covers most UART-to-I2C bridges, sensor hubs, and small PLCs. With 64 KB Flash it can run a USB-to-UART converter firmware stack. The 28-SOIC package is widely accepted on through-hole adapter PCBs and is the de-facto 8-bit training and prototyping footprint.

🔋

Battery-Operated Handheld Meter

The PIC18LF2610-I/SO is well matched to battery-operated handheld meters (digital multimeters, environmental loggers, portable gas detectors) because the 'LF' 2.0 V minimum supply keeps the part running down to a nearly-drained 2xAA alkaline or single LiSOCl2 primary cell, while the nanoWatt sleep modes drop current to microamps. Its 10-bit A/D handles battery voltage and sensor readings; the ECCP can drive an LCD charge pump or piezoelectric buzzer. The 28-SOIC compact 7.5 mm body saves board area in pocket-sized form factors.

Both share the same 28-SOIC pinout, 64 KB Flash, 3968-byte RAM, 10-bit A/D, USART, MSSP and CCP/ECCP peripheral mix, and are functionally drop-in compatible on the same PCB at any supply above 4.2 V.
Can PIC18F2610-I/SO be used as a drop-in replacement for PIC18LF2610-I/SO?
Yes - the PIC18F2610-I/SO is a drop-in functional replacement for the PIC18LF2610-I/SO at any supply voltage of 4.2 V to 5.5 V, sharing the same 28-SOIC footprint, pinout, peripheral set, and 64 KB Flash. If your design runs below 4.2 V (such as a 3.3 V-only or 2-cell battery system), the PIC18F2610-I/SO will NOT start; in that case only the LF variant or a PIC18F26K22 is suitable.
What is the best Microchip cross reference for PIC18LF2610-I/SO?
The best Microchip cross reference is the PIC18LF2610T-I/SO (same die, tape-and-reel packaging variant) at 100% parameter match in the same 28-SOIC footprint. For wider supply tolerance, the PIC18F2610-I/SO is the closest same-footprint variant (only difference is 4.2 V vs 2.0 V minimum supply). For more peripherals, PIC18LF2620-I/SO adds CAN while keeping the same 28-SOIC pinout.
What are the key specifications of PIC18LF2610-I/SO that engineers should know?
Engineers should know these headline facts: 8-bit PIC18 core at up to 40 MHz (10 MIPS), 64 KB Flash, 3968-byte RAM, 25 digital I/O, 10-bit A/D with up to 11 channels, 2 comparators, 2 CCP/ECCP, 1 USART, 1 MSSP (SPI/I2C), and 2.0 V to 5.5 V supply in a 28-SOIC package. Source: Microchip datasheet DS39626G, family PIC18F2X1X/4X1X.
PIC18LF2610-I/SO vs PIC18F25K22-I/SO - which is better for sensor signal conditioning?
For analog-front-end sensor signal conditioning, the PIC18LF25K22-I/SO is generally the better choice because it adds the 12-bit A/D converter (vs the PIC18LF2610's 10-bit A/D) while keeping the same 28-SOIC package and PIC18 instruction set. The 12-bit A/D provides 4x the resolution, improving small-signal measurement dynamic range in thermocouple, strain-gauge, and bridge-sensor applications.
When should I choose PIC18LF2610-I/SO over PIC18LF25K50-I/SO?
Choose the PIC18LF2610-I/SO when you specifically need its 64 KB Flash, its 10-bit A/D (rather than the K50's different A/D architecture), and the original PIC18F2X1X peripheral mix. Choose the PIC18LF25K50-I/SO when you need XLP nanoWatt technology for ultra-low sleep current, higher analog precision, and modern peripherals - both parts share the 28-SOIC package so PCB layout is reusable.
Is PIC18LF2610-I/SO suitable for battery-powered IoT designs?
Yes - the PIC18LF2610-I/SO is suitable for battery-powered IoT thanks to its LF 2.0 V minimum supply, nanoWatt Technology with idle/sleep/RC_RUN modes, and 31 kHz LFINTOSC for low-power timekeeping. For new ultra-low-power designs (sub-uA sleep), the PIC18LF25K50-I/SO with XLP technology is preferred because it drops sleep current an order of magnitude while keeping the same 28-SOIC footprint.

Notas de projeto

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/AVSS pair (pins 19/28 on 28-SOIC). Add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum-polymer on the 3.3 V rail feeding the MCU to handle ECCP PWM inrush. The LF variant tolerates supply down to 2.0 V, but if you run close to brown-out, set the BOR (brown-out reset) voltage to the lowest acceptable level to maximize battery life. Source: Microchip DS39626G, Section 2 (Electrical Characteristics).

Always bring out the ICSP pins (RB6/PGC = pin 26, RB7/PGD = pin 27) to a 5-pin or 6-pin programming header. Microchip recommends a 100-mil spaced 2x3 or single-row header for ICD/PICkit compatibility. Add MCLR pull-up (typically 10 kohm) and route the MCLR trace away from high-frequency PWM lines to avoid spurious resets. Source: Microchip application note TB087 (ICSP layout recommendations).

Do not assume PIC18LF2610 and PIC18F2610 are interchangeable at low VDD - the LF variant is required below 4.2 V. Also note: the LF variant still requires the configuration bits CONFIG1L (e.g., IESO, FCMEN) to be correctly set; an unprogrammed fresh device has LVP (low-voltage programming) enabled by default, which can interfere with RB5 if used as general I/O. Estimated: typical idle current for LF part at 3.3 V, 1 MHz is ~50 uA (datasheet figure).

Keep analog input traces (AN0-AN12) short and away from PWM and oscillator traces. Use a separate analog ground (AVSS, pin 28) tied to VSS at a single point. Add a 100 nF + 10 uF decoupling pair on AVSS/VDD if the 10-bit A/D drives ADC precision-critical sensors. Estimated: with 1.5 kohm source impedance, 12 TAD acquisition time gives ~10-bit accuracy at 40 MHz.

For the 28-SOIC (0.295 in / 7.50 mm body), the recommended land pattern follows JEDEC SOIC-28 standard: pads ~0.05 in wide x 0.085 in long with 0.050 in pitch. Use a four-layer PCB with a dedicated ground plane directly under the MCU, and route VDD power as a wide (>=20 mil) trace or small pour. Place the 40 MHz crystal (if used) within 0.25 in of OSC1/OSC2 with short traces and a ground guard ring.
