PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF Visão geral

The Microchip PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF is a 32-bit MIPS M4K microcontroller with 128KB Flash, 32KB SRAM, full-speed USB 2.0 OTG, 10/100 Ethernet MAC, CAN, and 80 MHz CPU clock, housed in a 100-pin TQFP (14x14 mm, PF suffix) package. It integrates a 16-channel 10-bit ADC, multiple UART/SPI/I2C, five 16-bit timers, a 16-bit Parallel Master Port, and a DMA controller, targeting industrial and embedded connectivity designs. The -V temperature grade denotes an operating range of -40 °C to +105 °C, while the trailing L/T indicates the 80 MHz speed grade and tape-and-reel packaging.

A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated circuit containing a 32-bit processor core, program memory, data memory, and on-chip peripherals. The PIC32MX family sits at the entry of Microchip's MIPS-based 32-bit portfolio, providing substantially higher throughput than 8/16-bit PIC MCUs while retaining a familiar MPLAB toolchain. M4K is a 5-stage pipeline core originally licensed from MIPS Technologies, augmented by single-cycle MAC, atomic bit manipulation, and a single-wire debug port. PIC32MX5/6/7 devices further add hardware 10/100 Ethernet MAC and full-speed USB OTG, placing them in the embedded-connectivity tier above simple GPIO controllers.

Key features include 128 KB Flash (128K × 8), 32 KB SRAM, 80 MHz core with 1.56 DMIPS/MHz throughput, USB 2.0 full-speed OTG with on-chip transceiver, 10/100 Ethernet MAC, two CAN 2.0B controllers, a 16-channel 10-bit 1 Msps ADC, and an integrated DMA controller with 8 channels. The device offers up to 85 general-purpose I/O pins, two I2C, two UART (one with IrDA/ISO7816), two SPI, and a 16-bit Parallel Master Port for off-chip memory expansion. The 100-pin TQFP package supports a wide temperature grade (-V: -40 °C to +105 °C) for industrial environments.

Typical applications include industrial control panels with Ethernet/IP connectivity, USB human-interface devices (keyboards, mass storage, vendor-class peripherals), CAN-based automotive sub-modules (non-safety-critical), point-of-sale terminals, and embedded web servers. The combination of Ethernet + USB + CAN + ample RAM lets a single PIC32MX7 device replace what previously required multiple MCUs plus an external PHY. When designing with this part, pay attention to the 3.3 V supply rail noise: the integrated PLL can be sensitive to noisy rails. Decouple VDD with at least one 0.1 µF ceramic per supply pin pair plus bulk, and follow Microchip's recommended decoupling guide in the datasheet for full-speed USB applications.

Aplicações típicas

PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Ethernet Gateway, USB Human Interface Device (HID), Automotive CAN Node, Point-of-Sale Terminal, Embedded Web Server, Data Acquisition / Industrial Logging.

🏭

Industrial Ethernet Gateway

The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF fits industrial Ethernet gateways because of its integrated 10/100 Ethernet MAC, 32 KB SRAM for buffering TCP/IP stacks like lwIP or Microchip's MLA, and -V temperature grade (-40 °C to +105 °C) for fan-less industrial enclosures. Placed as the main MCU with an external PHY (e.g., DP83848) on the RMII bus, it converts industrial UART/RS-485 traffic to Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, or PROFINET. The 80 MHz core (about 100 MIPS Dhrystone) leaves headroom for encryption when supporting TLS. The same chip also runs the FreeRTOS or OpenRTOS kernel with multiple socket connections concurrently.

🧩

USB Human Interface Device (HID)

The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF's integrated USB 2.0 full-speed OTG controller (with on-chip transceiver and pull-up resistors) makes it well-suited for USB keyboards, mice, vendor-class peripherals, and CDC-class serial adapters. The 80 MHz core handles HID report generation without CPU starvation, and the 32 KB SRAM comfortably buffers HID ring buffers and CDC echo buffers. The on-chip USB transceiver eliminates external components, keeping BOM cost down. For battery-powered USB peripherals, the -V grade's lower current draw and ability to suspend via USB-attached logic provides 50-100 µA idle current.

🚗

Automotive CAN Node

In automotive body and chassis modules, the PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF fits because of its two CAN 2.0B controllers operating up to 1 Mbit/s, the -V temperature grade supporting -40 °C to +105 °C cabin environments, and 128 KB Flash for OSEK/VDX or AUTOSAR-style stacks. Placed as the body controller behind the vehicle's CAN bus, it reads sensor CAN frames, drives lights and actuators, and forwards diagnostic data via UDS over CAN. Note: this part is NOT AEC-Q100 qualified, so it should only be used in non-safety-critical sub-modules, not in airbags, ABS, or steering.

💳

Point-of-Sale Terminal

The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF suits point-of-sale terminals that need Ethernet (for cloud sync), USB (for barcode scanner and printer), UART (for magnetic-stripe reader), and GPIO (for keypad and LCD) on one chip. The 32 KB SRAM buffers transaction logs and partial encrypted payloads, while the 80 MHz core runs TLS handshake with the payment gateway in under 200 ms. The 100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm package is easy to hand-prototype and rework. Many POS designs also use the Parallel Master Port (PMP) to drive a TFT color display directly without an external controller.

🌐

Embedded Web Server

The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF works well as an embedded web server for remote sensor monitoring, building automation, and SCADA subsystems. Its 32 KB SRAM fits lwIP plus a small HTTP server with dynamic CGI handlers, and the 80 MHz core handles 4-8 concurrent TCP sockets at modest throughput (around 2 Mbit/s). With the on-chip Ethernet MAC and an external PHY, the device serves HTML, JSON, and CSV data without an external RTOS or memory. The -V grade supports outdoor enclosures and rooftop installations.

🖥️

Data Acquisition / Industrial Logging

The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF serves as a multi-channel data logger with its 16-channel 10-bit 1 Msps ADC and 8-channel DMA controller that streams samples to SRAM without CPU intervention. The 32 KB SRAM is large enough for short continuous captures (about 6 ms at 1 Msps full bandwidth), while the 128 KB Flash holds FAT32/SD card stacks and Modbus RTU firmware. Industrial installations benefit from the -40 °C to +105 °C operating range and the 100-pin TQFP package with robust 0.5 mm pitch pins that survive vibration. Ethernet connectivity allows remote retrieval of logged data.

What is the operating voltage range of PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF?
The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF operates from 2.3 V to 3.6 V on its VDD pins, with a separate VDDCORE pin typically supplied by the internal regulator. According to the Microchip datasheet, the device does not support 5 V I/O directly; level translation or a 3.3 V regulator is required on any signal that interfaces with a 5 V rail. Decoupling per the datasheet's reference circuit is mandatory.
How much Flash and SRAM does the PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF have?
The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF integrates 128 KB of Flash program memory (128K × 8) and 32 KB of SRAM. Both are accessible via the single-cycle 32-bit Flash controller and dual-bank SRAM bus; the large SRAM lets you buffer USB descriptors, Ethernet frames, or audio streams without off-chip memory. PIC32MX76x is the highest-pin / highest-peripheral variant in the PIC32MX5/6/7 family.
What is the difference between PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF and PIC32MX764F128LT-I/PF?
The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF is the -V (extended industrial) temperature grade -40 °C to +105 °C, while the PIC32MX764F128LT-I/PF is -40 °C to +85 °C (standard industrial). Both share the same 100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm footprint, same Flash/RAM, same peripherals, and same 80 MHz speed, making them drop-in compatible in most applications. Choose -V when the enclosure sits near a power supply or in a fan-less enclosure.
What is the difference between PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF and PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PT?

PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF vs PIC32MX675F256L-80I/PF - which is better for USB + Ethernet?
The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF is generally better for USB + Ethernet designs than the PIC32MX675F256L-80I/PF because the 76x variant doubles SRAM (32 KB vs 16 KB) - important for buffering Ethernet frames and USB descriptors simultaneously. Both share the same 100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm footprint and same 80 MHz core, making the 764 the more capable drop-in upgrade if your firmware fits within 256 KB Flash. Choose 764 for richer stacks (TCP/IP + USB host); choose 675 if cost is the dominant driver.
When should I choose PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF over PIC32MX575F512LT-80V/PF?
Choose PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF over PIC32MX575F512LT-80V/PF when you need on-chip 10/100 Ethernet MAC, two CAN 2.0B controllers, and full-speed USB OTG - all missing on the PIC32MX575. The 76x part is therefore the right choice for industrial gateway or USB-device designs where Ethernet + USB are required. PIC32MX575 with 512 KB Flash is preferred only when you need extra code space and can tolerate no Ethernet/CAN.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF?
The best drop-in replacement is PIC32MX764F128LT-I/PF, which shares the identical 100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm footprint, same Flash (128 KB), same SRAM (32 KB), same peripherals, but only differs in temperature grade (-40 °C to +85 °C vs the -V's -40 °C to +105 °C). If you do not need the 105 °C rating, the -I variant offers the cheapest drop-in. For full pin-compatibility without changing layout, this is the canonical substitute.
Can PIC32MX675F512L-80V/PF replace PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF?
No, PIC32MX675F512L-80V/PF cannot fully replace PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF - although both share the 100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm footprint, the 675 has half the SRAM (32 KB on 764 vs 16 KB on 675 is the same, sorry - actually 32 KB is identical, but the 675 has 512 KB Flash vs 128 KB and lacks one CAN controller on the original spec - per PIC32MX5/6/7 family datasheet). Verify against your firmware stack: the 675 may suffice if you do not use the second CAN, but the substitution is not purely transparent. Always cross-check MPLAB Harmony Configurator pin assignments.
Where can I download the PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF datasheet PDF?
The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF datasheet is available on the Microchip website as part of the PIC32MX5/6/7 family document, downloadable as 'DS61156' PDF from ww1.microchip.com. The same datasheet covers the entire PIC32MX5/6/7 family because they share the same silicon revision; you will find pinout, electrical specs, and peripheral chapters in one document. Mirrors include alldatasheet.net and the LCSC partner page.
What is the pinout of the PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF?
The PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF uses the standard 100-pin TQFP PIC32MX7 pinout: pin 1 = RF2, pin 2 = RF3, pins 5-12 = RG2/RG3/RG6-RG9/RG12/RG13/RG14/RG15 (I/O bank G), pins 17-26 = RG0/RG1/RG7/RG8/RC12-RC15/RA0/RA1, and the rest are documented in chapter 2 of the PIC32MX5/6/7 datasheet. Multiple VDD/VSS pairs must all be connected; consult the package pinout diagram in the datasheet, not the same-family PT (12x12 mm) variant, because pin numbering differs. The Ethernet signals (ERXD, ETXD, EREFCLK) are on dedicated RMII pins.
What are the key specifications of PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF that engineers should know?
Key specifications: 80 MHz MIPS M4K core (1.56 DMIPS/MHz, 100 MIPS Dhrystone), 128 KB Flash, 32 KB SRAM, 10/100 Ethernet MAC, USB 2.0 full-speed OTG, 2 × CAN 2.0B, 16-channel 10-bit 1 Msps ADC, 8-channel DMA, 5 × 16-bit timers, 85 GPIO, 2.3-3.6 V VDD, -40 °C to +105 °C operating range, 100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm. The combination of Ethernet + USB + CAN + ample RAM on one chip is the part's defining feature, enabling embedded connectivity products without external bridges. Power consumption is approximately 65 mA at 80 MHz with all peripherals active.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF current consumption at 80 MHz with all peripherals active is approximately 65 mA at 3.3 V (per Microchip datasheet DC characteristics). The 100-pin TQFP package has multiple VDD/VSS pairs - all must be connected for proper operation; missing one creates logic errors that are very hard to debug. Use at least one 0.1 µF ceramic capacitor per VDD pin pair plus a 4.7 µF bulk capacitor near the MCU. For USB applications, add a ferrite bead on VUSB to keep digital switching noise out of the analog USB supply.

Route the 80 MHz system clock and the USB DP/DM traces as a 90 Ω differential pair, keep them short, and avoid stubs. The Ethernet RMII signals (ERXD0/1, ETXD0/1, EREFCLK, EMDC, EMDIO) should also be length-matched within about 50 mil to the external PHY. Place the 25 MHz crystal within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins with a continuous ground plane underneath to minimize EMI. If you intend to use Ethernet, allocate a complete ground-free zone under the RMII bus; do not route power or switching signals underneath.

Do not confuse the PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PF (100-pin TQFP 14x14 mm, -V temperature grade) with the PIC32MX764F128LT-V/PT (100-pin TQFP 12x12 mm) - same silicon but different land patterns. Do not confuse -V (-40 °C to +105 °C) with -I (-40 °C to +85 °C). When designing for industrial environments above 85 °C, the -V grade is mandatory. Watch out for the boot configuration bits: MCLR must be pulled high through a 10 kΩ resistor for normal operation, and the PGECx/PGEDx pins must be accessible for in-circuit serial programming (ICSP).

Allocate separate ground returns for the analog section (ADC VREF+, VREF-) and the digital section (VSS pins) and join them at one point near the MCU. Place the ADC reference decoupling capacitor (typically 0.1 µF ceramic + 10 µF tantalum) within 5 mm of the VREF+ pin. Keep the ADC input traces away from digital switching signals; if unavoidable, route them on opposite sides of the board. For USB, follow the USB 2.0 layout guide: 90 Ω differential impedance, no vias on the DP/DM pair if possible, and a clean ground plane underneath.
