PR5331C3HN Visão geral

The NXP PR5331C3HN is a highly integrated 13.56 MHz contactless NFC reader/writer transceiver with USB interface, housed in a 40-VFQFN Exposed Pad package. It supports FeliCa, ISO 14443 A/B, and MIFARE protocols via I2C and UART, operates from 2.5V to 3.6V, and delivers plug-and-play NFC functionality for embedded reader designs. According to the NXP product page, the part integrates an internal microcontroller that runs a dedicated ROM code to handle the full RF protocol stack, offloading the host processor from real-time NFC tasks.

What is an NFC reader IC? An NFC (Near Field Communication) reader IC, also called a contactless front-end or HF RFID transceiver, is a semiconductor device that energizes and communicates with passive NFC tags, smart cards, and peer devices over a 13.56 MHz magnetic field. NFC reader ICs sit inside the broader RFID / contactless / wireless-charging adjacent semiconductor taxonomy and typically convert the host's digital commands into amplitude-modulated RF and demodulate the load-modulated response from the card. They are critical building blocks for payment terminals, access control, ticketing, pairing, and IoT identification.

Key features of the PR5331C3HN include 13.56 MHz operation across multiple air-interface standards (FeliCa, ISO 14443 A/B, MIFARE), dual digital host interfaces (USB and HSU), an integrated 32-bit microcontroller with on-chip ROM firmware, and a 40-VFQFN Exposed Pad footprint for compact surface-mount designs. The device handles peer-to-peer NFC communication and card emulation/reader modes through standard CCID and PC/SC driver stacks, making it attractive for OS-level integration on Windows, Linux and Android hosts.

Technically, the PR5331C3HN uses a single-ended antenna driver with internal matching and an LDO-fed analog chain, achieving sub-milliwatt standby power while supporting full RF output into a 50 ohm-equivalent antenna tank during transmit. The integrated ROM implements the complete ISO/IEC 14443-3 Type A/B anticollision, MIFARE Classic crypto, and FeliCa polling sequences, so the host only sees abstracted APDU commands. The 40-pin QFN exposed pad ties to a quiet analog ground and provides a low thermal-resistance path for the ~30 mA peak RF current pulse.

Typical applications include NFC readers for POS payment terminals, Windows-logon / physical-access badge readers, NFC pairing modules for Bluetooth/Wi-Fi devices, IoT identification nodes, and developer/evaluation boards. Its USB-only connection model makes it especially clean for PC-tethered designs where an internal MCU slot is precious. Over the air, the part achieves typical operating distances of 4-6 cm with a 50 mm loop antenna matched to the on-chip TX driver.

When designing with the PR5331C3HN, lay the antenna within 30 mm of the chip to keep the matching network simple, and tie the exposed pad to a contiguous ground pour with multiple thermal vias to dissipate the RF-pulse current. Designers migrating from PN532 family parts should review the digital host interface selection carefully, because PR5331C3HN favors USB/HSU whereas PN532 typically uses SPI/I2C.

Aplicações típicas

PR5331C3HN é adequado para 7 aplicaçãos: NFC Payment POS Terminal, Physical Access / Badge Reader, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi NFC Pairing Dongle, Industrial IoT Identification Node, Public Transit/Event Ticketing Validator, Healthcare / Medical Device Pairing, PC-Tethered Reader/Writer Development Tools.

💳

NFC Payment POS Terminal

The PR5331C3HN's integrated MCU plus on-chip ROM and full-speed USB device interface lets it enumerate as a standard CCID reader on Android, Windows, and Linux POS hosts with no firmware port needed. Its native support for ISO 14443 A/B and MIFARE covers the global contactless credit-card standard, while the 4-6 cm read range with a matched 50 mm loop antenna meets EMV contactless geometry at the payment cradle. Unlike a discrete RF front-end, the PR5331C3HN offloads the entire ISO 14443-3 anti-collision and Type A/B APDU parser, freeing the application processor to focus on payment authorisation.

🔐

Physical Access / Badge Reader

For badge readers at door controllers and turnstiles, the PR5331C3HN's native FeliCa, ISO 14443 A/B and MIFARE Classic support covers most corporate ID, transit cards, and student cards in a single BOM line. The 2.5-3.6 V supply matches a typical 3.3 V regulated rail from PoE, while the integrated ROM stack handles the MIFARE Classic crypto handshake locally. The 40-VFQFN exposed pad keeps the total reader module footprint under 25 mm × 25 mm, enabling flush mount behind a plastic bezel.

🎧

Bluetooth/Wi-Fi NFC Pairing Dongle

Pairing modules embedded in Bluetooth speakers, Wi-Fi smart-home hubs, and headphones often need a single-chip NFC tap-to-pair path. The PR5331C3HN delivers this with its on-chip peer-to-peer mode and USB or HSU interface to the host Bluetooth controller, achieving sub-second link-set times with a typical smartphone. The integrated ROM handles the NFC Forum NPP and SNEP framing and presents them as APDUs over USB CDC-ACM.

🏭

Industrial IoT Identification Node

Asset-tracking and tool-identification nodes on the factory floor use the PR5331C3HN to read MIFARE Ultralight or ISO 14443 tags on parts, totes, and consumables. Its 30 mA peak RF current draw makes it suitable for battery-assisted operation with duty-cycled polling, and its UART link integrates into the XAIPART-listed MC9S08 host family referenced for industrial IoT. The 40-VFQFN exposed pad keeps the node under 20 mm × 20 mm for inline mounting.

🎫

Public Transit/Event Ticketing Validator

Ticketing validators need to read both closed-loop MIFARE DESFire transit cards and open-loop EMV contactless cards at high throughput. The PR5331C3HN's integrated ISO 14443-4 layer plus on-chip DESFire handling fits this bill without an external crypto co-processor, while its 30 mA peak allows a 50 mm loop antenna to clear gate-mounted antennas during rapid swipe-as-you-go motion. The 40-VFQFN exposed pad and 3.3 V supply drop cleanly into existing gate-controller boards.

💊

Healthcare / Medical Device Pairing

Medical pumps, infusion devices, and diagnostic wearables often need operator-pairing or accessory-identification via NFC. The PR5331C3HN's integrated MCU and on-chip ROM simplify IEC 62304 and FDA 21 CFR Part 820 firmware-change control, because the on-chip NFC stack is locked to NXP's released ROM. The 40-VFQFN exposed pad and 2.5-3.6 V supply fit typical 3.3 V medical device rails, and the part draws under 30 mA peak during RF transmit for battery-powered designs.

🖥️

PC-Tethered Reader/Writer Development Tools

Designers building Linux/Android/Windows test rigs and dev kits need a tethered NFC reader that appears as a standard CCID device with no extra drivers beyond the OS stack. The PR5331C3HN qualifies for this use case because its USB full-speed device interface and integrated ROM firmware enumerate as a CCID-class reader, allowing libnfc, NXP NCI drivers, and PC/SC stacks to communicate without bespoke host glue. The 4-6 cm range with a printed-loop antenna on a 2-layer dev board gives repeatable bench characterization.

PR5331C3HN vs PN532 - which is better for an NFC reader design?
The PR5331C3HN is preferable when the host already has a free USB or high-speed UART port and you want a turnkey module with integrated MCU and ROM firmware. The PN532 is the better choice when the host has an SPI/I2C-only header and you prefer direct register-level access from your own MCU. The PR5331C3HN uses a 40-VFQFN while the PN532 uses a 40-QFN or 32-QFN, so board footprint compatibility is product-specific, not a drop-in.
What is the difference between PR5331C3HN and SLRC610?
The PR5331C3HN integrates a 32-bit MCU with on-chip ROM firmware and connects to the host via USB/HSU, while the SLRC610 is a bare ISO 15693 / ISO 14443 transceiver front-end with SPI/UART/I2C that requires an external host MCU running the reader stack. Both share the NXP 13.56 MHz HF architecture, but the PR5331C3HN is a turnkey tethered reader whereas the SLRC610 is a building block for embedded designs.
When should I choose PR5331C3HN over CLRC663?
Choose the PR5331C3HN when the host platform is USB-or-UART-only and you want the NFC stack entirely on-chip so the host just runs CCID/PC/SC. Choose the CLRC663 plus host MCU when you need peer-to-peer NFC, ISO 15693 long-range, or you want to integrate the reader into a real-time firmware loop where deterministic latency matters. Both share a 40-QFN family but pinout differs - they are not drop-in compatible.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PR5331C3HN?
The closest drop-in parts within the NXP CL/RC family in the same 40-VFQFN exposed-pad footprint are the PR5331C3HN/C350:55 and PR5331C3HN/C360:55 reel-packaging variants, plus the same-family firmware-revision PR5331C3HN updates. For pin-compatible NXP ICs in adjacent 40-VFQFN footprints, the PN533 family shares the package but a different firmware load - check the host driver compatibility before swapping.
Can PR5331C3HN be replaced by PN533?
The PR5331C3HN and PN533 share a 40-VFQFN family footprint but differ in host firmware load, RF register map, and antenna-matching defaults. Direct drop-in is not guaranteed across firmware revisions; designers need to re-validate the host driver stack (libnfc, NXP NXP-NCI, or vendor-specific) after substitution. Confirm pinout in the most recent NXP datasheet revision before qualifying the alternate.

Guia de seleção

Select the PR5331C3HN when the host is a PC, POS terminal, or USB-equipped industrial controller that needs a turnkey NFC reader with no host-side protocol stack - its on-chip ROM handles FeliCa, ISO 14443 A/B and MIFARE end to end. Choose the PN5331C3HN (same 40-VFQFN package, alternate firmware load) only when you have validated the firmware revision against your libnfc or vendor stack, since host drivers may not recognize all revisions. Avoid cross-family NXP alternatives like SLRC663 or CLRC663 unless you need a bare front-end without the on-chip MCU - those parts require an external host processor and are not drop-in replacements despite sharing the package family footprint.

Notas de projeto

The 40-VFQFN exposed pad must be soldered to a contiguous ground pour with at least 9 thermal vias (3×3 grid, 0.3 mm pitch, finished barrel 0.25 mm) to keep the die-to-ambient thermal rise under 25 °C during continuous RF transmit, which draws ~30 mA peak. Estimated: with theta_JA around 30 °C/W on a 4-layer board and 0.55 W dissipation, junction-to-ambient rise is approximately 16.5 °C - well within the datasheet limit, but only when the pad is properly stitched.

Place the antenna within 30 mm of the TX1/TX2 pins to minimize the loop-resistance on the 13.56 MHz tank. Avoid routing any digital traces across the antenna copper pour; keep at least 3 mm clearance. Add a pi-network footprint of 2 capacitors and 1 inductor on each TX line for production tuning of the matching circuit to the chosen antenna coil inductance (typical 1-3 µH). Datasheet reference: see the antenna matching section in NXP application note for CL/RC reader family.

Do not connect VBUS and VDD together without an inline Schottky or ferrite bead - the PR5331C3HN expects USB VBUS detection at the VBUS pin while the main regulator powers VCC. Bypass both with separate 100 nF + 4.7 µF ceramic capacitors within 1 mm of the pins. Do not leave TEST, BOOT, or the NC pins floating - they must be tied to their prescribed states (TEST floating or GND, BOOT to GND for normal operation) or the on-chip MCU may enter a test mode instead of the application ROM.

The USB DP/DM lines require a 27 Ω series resistor close to the IC plus a 90 Ω differential pull-up pair selected per USB 2.0 full-speed spec. Place these components within 5 mm of the IC pins and route DP/DM as a matched 90 Ω differential pair with reference ground plane beneath them - this is essential because USB-IF compliance fails at 480 Mbps and lower with poor differential matching, even though the NFC operation itself runs only at 13.56 MHz.

Add bulk capacitance of 22 µF tantalum or polymer on the 3.3 V VCC rail near the IC. The internal RF TX pump draws short current bursts at the carrier frequency, and insufficient bulk causes VCC droop which in turn detunes the matching network. A 10 µF ceramic + 100 nF ceramic parallel combination handles both low-frequency droop and high-frequency decoupling at the 13.56 MHz carrier.
