PIC16F18855T-I/ML Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F18855T-I/ML is a 32 MHz 8-bit PIC® XLP™ microcontroller with 14 KB Flash, 1 KB SRAM and 256 B EEPROM in a 28-pin 6x6 mm QFN (ML) package with exposed thermal pad. It belongs to the PIC16(L)F1885X/7X family and combines Analog, Core Independent Peripherals (CIP), communication peripherals and eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology for general-purpose and low-power designs.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a configurable set of peripherals on one die. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, MCUs sit below microprocessors and above simple digital logic in capability, and 8-bit MCUs like the PIC16 family occupy the low-power, deterministic, cost-optimized tier used in sensor interfaces, user-interface controllers and battery-powered appliances.

Key features include a 32 MHz internal oscillator, 14 KB self-programmable Flash program memory, 1 KB SRAM, 256 B EEPROM, up to 25 channels of 10-bit ADC with computation, multiple Core Independent Peripherals (CLC, NCO, PWM, DSM, CCP, SMT), I2C/SPI/EUSART, a 16-bit CRC/SCAN module and a Hardware Limit Timer (HLT) for functional-safety class B applications. XLP technology delivers typical <1 uA sleep current for coin-cell and energy-harvesting designs.

The architecture is built on an enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a hardware multiplier and 49 instruction types, accelerating C code generation through the XC8 toolchain. The 28-pin QFN offers 24 I/O pins with interrupt-on-change and peripheral pin select (PPS), giving designers flexible pin mapping for mixed-signal layouts.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered medical devices, home appliances with capacitive touch, automotive body and HVAC sub-modules (Functional Safety ready), industrial sensor signal conditioning and user-interface/HMI panels with LED drive. The wide 1.8-5.5 V operating range and XLP sleep modes support multi-year battery life.

When designing with this MCU, populate the configuration words early in firmware to set oscillator source, watchdog, brown-out and code-protect options. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF capacitor placed within 3 mm of the pin, and reserve a dedicated ICSP™ header (PGC/PGD/MCLR/VPP) for in-circuit programming and debugging with MPLAB X IDE and PICkit/SNAP tools.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16F18855T-I/ML ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Low-Power IoT Sensor Node, Functional Safety Appliance Control (IEC 60730 Class B), Capacitive Touch User Interface, Battery-Powered Medical Device, Automotive Body Electronics (AEC-Q100 readiness), Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16F18855T-I/ML is well matched to wireless sensor node endpoints that sleep most of the time and wake briefly to transmit. Its XLP sleep currents below 1 uA combined with 1 KB SRAM and 14 KB Flash are sufficient to run a small IPv6/6LoWPAN or LoRaWAN class A stack with periodic sensor reads. The 32 MHz HFINTOSC eliminates an external crystal on the SPI/I2C bus to the radio module, lowering BOM cost. ADC2 with Computation oversamples and averages analog sensor data in hardware, so the CPU can stay in Sleep longer between samples, directly extending battery life.

🏭

Functional Safety Appliance Control (IEC 60730 Class B)

The PIC16F18855T-I/ML embeds CRC/SCAN, Windowed Watchdog and a Hardware Limit Timer (HLT) that together implement IEC 60730 Class B self-test routines for white goods, HVAC and cooking appliances. The 14 KB Flash hosts both the application and the Class B test library from Microchip without external supervision. Up to 24 ADC channels let a single MCU read multiple temperature sensors, current shunts and the user keypad, while the 5-bit and 8-bit DACs drive LED indicators and reference setpoints. Designers achieve compliance with minimal external parts and the same 28-QFN footprint used across product variants.

📱

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC16F18855T-I/ML integrates Core Independent Peripherals such as CLC and NCO that can be combined with mTouch capacitive sensing firmware to drive 8-16 touch buttons without CPU wake-ups for every scan. The 16-bit PWM with auto-shutdown backlights the panel LEDs smoothly while the MCU sleeps. PPS remaps touch, PWM and communication pins to any QFN ball, simplifying PCB routing when mechanical constraints force the touch sensors into unusual positions. With 14 KB Flash and 1 KB SRAM, designers comfortably fit Microchip's mTouch reference library plus a small UI state machine.

💊

Battery-Powered Medical Device

Portable medical peripherals such as pill dispensers, glucose meter dongles and pulse-oximetry front-ends benefit from the PIC16F18855T-I/ML's 2.3-5.5 V supply range that allows direct operation from a single 3 V coin cell or two AA cells. The 24-channel ADC with Computation oversamples photodiode and bio-impedance waveforms in hardware, freeing CPU cycles for digital filtering. Functional Safety peripherals (HLT, CRC/SCAN) support fault detection required for IEC 60601 peripheral accessories. The 28-QFN package keeps the PCB area under 25 mm², which is critical for compact medical enclosures.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (AEC-Q100 readiness)

The PIC16F18855T-I/ML family is offered in AEC-Q100 qualified variants that bring Functional Safety peripherals to body controllers, HVAC panels and lighting modules. Up to 4 16-bit PWM channels drive LED matrices or motor bridges, while the EUSART and I2C peripherals interface LIN transceivers for body network nodes. The wide -40C to +125C operating range covers under-hood and cabin environments. Designers benefit from the same 28-QFN footprint as industrial variants, enabling one PCB layout to support multiple product tiers with simple firmware recompilation.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16F18855T-I/ML is well suited to compact 4-20 mA loop-powered sensor transmitters and bridge-sensor conditioners in industrial settings. Its 24-channel 10-bit ADC handles multiple RTDs, strain gauges or pressure transducers with selectable voltage references for ratiometric measurement. The DSM and CLC peripherals implement synchronous detection, modulation and digital filters in hardware, removing the need for external op-amp stages. Two comparators support window-watchdog and threshold alarms without CPU intervention. The 32 MHz core plus C compiler-friendly architecture cuts design time when porting legacy PIC16 firmware.

  • Higher ADC channel count (vs. PIC16F18854-I/ML)

Designhinweise

Place a single 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of each VDD pin, with a second 1 uF bulk capacitor near the package exposed pad. For battery applications, use the LF variant (PIC16LF18855) at 1.8-3.6 V to access the lowest XLP sleep currents. Estimated: at 32 MHz the active current is ~1.3 mA at 3.3 V; at Sleep with peripherals off it drops below 1 uA per the datasheet electrical characteristics.

The 28-QFN (ML) 6x6 mm package exposes a thermal pad that must be soldered to a PCB copper pour connected to VSS. Use at least 0.5 mm thermal vias in a 3x3 grid under the EP for heat dissipation. Per Microchip AN2043, the EP is the primary ground reference and skipping it will degrade ADC noise performance and electromagnetic immunity.

Do not omit the configuration words at 0x8007 in firmware; otherwise the MCU defaults to an unprogrammed state and the ICSP debugger cannot connect. Reserve the MCLR/VPP pin (pin 28) as a dedicated reset/programming line and add a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD. When migrating from PIC16F18855-I/ML tube to PIC16F18855T-I/ML tape-and-reel, double-check the orientation against the QFN pin-1 marker dot on incoming reel.
