ADUM4154ARIZ Présentation
A digital isolator is a device that transfers digital signals across an isolation barrier, providing galvanic isolation to protect sensitive circuitry from high voltages, ground loops, and noise. In the hierarchy of isolation components, a digital isolator falls under the category of isolation ICs, which are part of the broader power management and signal conditioning ICs. The ADUM4154ARIZ specifically targets SPI communication, a synchronous serial interface widely used in embedded systems to connect microcontrollers to sensors, ADCs, DACs, and other peripherals.
Key features of the ADUM4154ARIZ include support for up to four slave devices via two address pins, a 2 Mbps data rate (as listed by DigiKey, though the datasheet indicates 17 MHz SPI clock), and a high common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) of 25 kV/µs. The device operates with a supply voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V on VDD1 and 3.0V to 3.6V on VDD2, allowing level shifting between different logic domains. The propagation delay is low, ensuring minimal skew in SPI timing.
Technically, the ADUM4154ARIZ uses iCoupler technology, which employs micro-transformers to transmit data across the isolation barrier. This approach provides superior performance compared to optocouplers, including higher data rates, lower power consumption, and better reliability. The device also includes an enable pin for power management and a thermal shutdown feature for protection.
Typical applications include industrial automation, motor control, data acquisition systems, and any SPI-based system requiring isolation between a controller and peripheral devices. The high CMTI makes it suitable for noisy environments such as factory floors and power conversion systems.
When designing with the ADUM4154ARIZ, ensure proper PCB layout with adequate creepage and clearance distances for the 5kV isolation rating. Also, decouple both supply rails with 0.1µF capacitors close to the pins to minimize noise.

Notes de conception
For 5kV isolation, ensure adequate creepage and clearance distances on the PCB. The SOIC-20 package has a minimum creepage of 8mm, but for reinforced isolation, maintain at least 8mm between primary and secondary sides. Use a slot or cutout under the isolator to increase creepage distance.
Decouple both VDD1 and VDD2 with 0.1µF ceramic capacitors placed as close as possible to the pins. Additionally, use a 10µF bulk capacitor on each supply if the power source is far. This ensures stable operation and reduces noise coupling across the isolation barrier.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum ratings for supply voltages. Ensure that the voltage differential between any two pins does not exceed the isolation rating. Also, avoid floating the enable pin; tie it to VDD1 or VDD2 as appropriate to ensure the device is always enabled or disabled as intended.
