Typical Applications
ADUM4154ARIZ is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Automation, Motor Control, Data Acquisition Systems, Medical Equipment, Renewable Energy Systems, Test and Measurement.
Industrial Automation
The ADUM4154ARIZ provides galvanic isolation for SPI communication between PLCs, sensors, and actuators in industrial environments. Its 5kV isolation and 25kV/Β΅s CMTI ensure reliable operation in the presence of motor noise and ground loops. The 17MHz SPI clock supports high-speed data acquisition, while the four slave select lines enable connection of multiple sensors to a single controller. The wide temperature range (-40Β°C to +125Β°C) suits harsh factory floors.
Recommended
Motor Control
In motor control systems, the ADUM4154ARIZ isolates the SPI interface between the microcontroller and gate drivers or encoder interfaces. The high CMTI (25kV/Β΅s) prevents false triggering from fast voltage transients generated by PWM switching. The 5kV isolation protects low-voltage control circuitry from high-voltage motor drives. The low propagation delay ensures accurate timing for real-time control loops, and the four slave select lines allow connection of multiple encoders or current sensors.
Recommended
Data Acquisition Systems
The ADUM4154ARIZ is ideal for data acquisition systems requiring isolation between analog front-ends and digital controllers. It supports SPI clock rates up to 17MHz, enabling high-throughput sampling from ADCs and DACs. The four slave select lines allow multiple converters to share a single SPI bus, reducing pin count. The 5kV isolation ensures safety in medical and industrial monitoring equipment, while the low jitter maintains signal integrity for precise measurements.
Recommended
Medical Equipment
In medical devices, the ADUM4154ARIZ provides patient isolation for SPI-based sensors and monitors. The 5kV isolation meets safety standards for patient-connected equipment, preventing leakage currents. The low power consumption and small SOIC-20 package make it suitable for portable devices. The wide temperature range and high reliability of iCoupler technology ensure long-term operation in critical care environments.
Recommended
Renewable Energy Systems
The ADUM4154ARIZ is used in solar inverters and wind turbine controllers to isolate SPI communication between the main controller and power stage monitoring circuits. The high CMTI (25kV/Β΅s) ensures reliable operation in the presence of high-voltage switching transients. The 5kV isolation protects low-voltage control electronics from high-voltage DC buses. The four slave select lines enable connection of multiple voltage and current sensors for comprehensive system monitoring.
Recommended
Test and Measurement
In test and measurement equipment, the ADUM4154ARIZ isolates SPI interfaces between measurement front-ends and digital processors. The 17MHz SPI clock supports high-speed data transfer for oscilloscopes and data loggers. The low propagation delay and jitter ensure accurate timing for synchronized measurements. The 5kV isolation protects sensitive measurement circuits from ground loops and noise, improving measurement accuracy.

Key Differentiators
- Supports up to four SPI slave devices (vs ADUM3154ARSZ)
- High CMTI of 25 kV/Β΅s (vs ISO7741DW)
- SPI-optimized with integrated slave select routing (vs Si8641BB-B-IS1)
Design Notes
For 5kV isolation, ensure adequate creepage and clearance distances on the PCB. The SOIC-20 package has a minimum creepage of 8mm, but for reinforced isolation, maintain at least 8mm between primary and secondary sides. Use a slot or cutout under the isolator to increase creepage distance.
Decouple both VDD1 and VDD2 with 0.1Β΅F ceramic capacitors placed as close as possible to the pins. Additionally, use a 10Β΅F bulk capacitor on each supply if the power source is far. This ensures stable operation and reduces noise coupling across the isolation barrier.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum ratings for supply voltages. Ensure that the voltage differential between any two pins does not exceed the isolation rating. Also, avoid floating the enable pin; tie it to VDD1 or VDD2 as appropriate to ensure the device is always enabled or disabled as intended.
