AS7050-BWLT Présentation
A biosignal analog frontend is the signal-chain block that converts tiny physiological electrical and optical signals into digitized data. It sits between raw sensors (LEDs, photodiodes, skin electrodes) and the host microcontroller, integrating LED drivers, low-noise transimpedance and instrumentation amplifiers, ADCs, and digital filtering. AFEs form the core of the vital-sign-monitoring subsystem hierarchy within wearable sensor ICs.
The AS7050 supports three biosignal modalities: photoplethysmogram (PPG) for heart-rate monitoring by sampling light modulated by expanding and contracting blood vessels; electrocardiogram (ECG) for cardiac electrical activity via external electrodes; and galvanic skin resistance (GSR) for stress and hydration measurement. Compared to the previous ams OSRAM biosignal sensor generation, the AS7050 is a full biosignal converting unit with the flexibility to support many LED and photodiode arrangements in different mechanical layouts.
Technically, the 8 LED driver outputs allow multi-wavelength illumination (e.g., green, red, infrared) while up to 6 photodiode inputs enable multi-site or multi-angle light collection, improving signal-to-noise ratio and motion-artifact robustness. Support for external electrodes enables simultaneous optical and electrical biosignal capture on one IC, simplifying multi-modal designs.
Typical applications include smartwatch and fitness-band heart-rate monitoring, clinical-grade ECG patches, and GSR-based stress monitoring in wearables and earbuds.
Design consideration: pay close attention to optical crosstalk between LED and photodiode placement and use the I2C-programmable LED current settings to balance signal quality against power consumption in battery-powered designs.

Applications typiques
AS7050-BWLT convient pour 6 applications: Smartwatch Heart-Rate Monitoring, ECG Patch and Cardiac Monitoring, GSR Stress and Hydration Sensing, Wireless Earbud Health Sensing, Clinical Patient Monitoring, Fitness Band Multi-Sport Tracking.
Smartwatch Heart-Rate Monitoring
The AS7050-BWLT is purpose-built for wrist-worn PPG heart-rate monitoring. Its up to 8 LED drivers support multi-wavelength illumination (green for motion tolerance, red and IR for perfusion-independent readings), while up to 6 photodiode inputs allow wide-aperture or multi-site light collection that raises SNR and suppresses motion artifacts during exercise. Placed behind the watch glass with an optical blocker and dark epoxy, the AFE drives LEDs in timed sequences and digitizes reflected light, streaming data over I2C to the watch MCU. I2C-configurable LED current lets designers trade measurement quality against battery life, which is the dominant design constraint in wearables.
Recommandé
ECG Patch and Cardiac Monitoring
With support for external electrodes, the AS7050-BWLT captures electrocardiogram signals directly, making it suitable for single-lead ECG patches and chest-worn cardiac monitors. The AFE conditions the microvolt-level electrode signals through its low-noise analog chain and digitizes them for the host, while the same chip can simultaneously run an optical PPG channel for pulse-wave timing - enabling pulse-transit-time estimation on a single IC. The WLP package suits flexible and slim patch PCBs, and the I2C interface simplifies integration with a low-power BLE microcontroller. Careful electrode input biasing and shielding layout are the main performance considerations.
Recommandé
GSR Stress and Hydration Sensing
Galvanic skin resistance measurement is fully supported by the AS7050-BWLT via its electrode inputs. GSR tracks changes in skin conductance caused by sympathetic nervous system activity, allowing wearables and earbuds to infer stress, cognitive load, or hydration status. The AFE excites the electrodes and measures the resulting skin resistance through its measurement channels, digitizing results for the host over I2C. Combined with PPG on the same die, designers can fuse GSR trends with heart-rate variability for more robust stress algorithms - a key differentiator for mental-wellness wearable products targeting continuous, unobtrusive monitoring.
Recommandé
Wireless Earbud Health Sensing
In-ear PPG is an emerging vital-sign site, and the AS7050-BWLT's flexible LED/photodiode matrix fits the constrained optics of earbud form factors. Its up to 6 photodiode inputs allow pairing with small-area photodiodes positioned against the ear canal wall, while LED driver granularity compensates for variable skin contact pressure. The WLP package minimizes PCB area in extremely compact audio-plus-sensor designs. Running PPG intermittently with I2C-controlled sequences keeps average current within the tiny cell budget of true wireless earbuds, enabling continuous heart-rate and SpO2-style measurement during workouts without noticeably reducing playback time.
Recommandé
Clinical Patient Monitoring
For clinical-grade wearable monitors and telehealth patches, the AS7050-BWLT provides simultaneous multi-modal biosignal acquisition - PPG, ECG, and GSR - from one silicon device, reducing component count and calibration burden. The 8 LED driver and 6 photodiode input architecture supports redundant optical channels for measurement continuity if one optical path is compromised by motion or poor contact. Data streamed over I2C to a supervisory MCU can be timestamped and transmitted via BLE or cellular links. The lead-free WLP package supports RoHS-compliant medical device manufacturing, and revision C silicon reflects the current production maturity of the part.
Recommandé
Fitness Band Multi-Sport Tracking
Fitness bands need heart rate that stays accurate across running, cycling, and strength training - conditions with heavy motion artifact. The AS7050-BWLT addresses this with multi-wavelength LED drive and multiple photodiode inputs that enable algorithms to discriminate perfusion signals from motion noise. Its biosignal-converting architecture (versus the previous ams OSRAM generation) improves sampling flexibility for sport modes with different cadence profiles. The I2C interface integrates cleanly with low-power band MCUs, and programmable LED duty cycling keeps the always-on heart-rate feature within the strict milliwatt budget of a small LiPo cell worn all day.

Notes de conception
In PPG layouts, separate the LED and photodiode fields with an optical barrier (slot or opaque epoxy wall) to prevent direct LED-to-photodiode crosstalk, which otherwise saturates the transimpedance front-end and destroys the AC pulse signal. Keep photodiode traces short, guarded, and routed away from LED drive lines and switching converters; the photodiode currents are in the nanoamp range and highly susceptible to leakage and coupled noise. Use a solid ground plane under the AFE.
Power the AS7050-BWLT analog supply from a low-noise LDO rather than a direct buck output; LED driver current is pulsed and can couple supply ripple into the photodiode readings. Decouple each supply pin with 100 nF ceramic capacitors placed within 2 mm of the pin, plus bulk capacitance at the LED supply. In battery wearables, sequence the AFE's LED drivers at the lowest current that still achieves target SNR to maximize battery life.
Do not assume package-mechanical equivalence between suffix variants: the AS7050-BWLT is the WLP LF tape-and-reel variant (REV.C), and footprint and ballout must be confirmed against the manufacturer short datasheet before layout release. Also note that ECG and GSR functions require external electrode connections with proper biasing - omitting the electrode bias network is a common cause of noisy or railed ECG channels in first prototypes.
